Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: November 2002. World's first dynamically stabilized Human Transporter; forward and backward maneuvering guided by rider's natural motions.

The Segway Human Transporter (HT) is a truly 21st-century idea. A two-wheeled electric vehicle that's practical, efficient, slightly miraculous, and an undeniably fun way of getting around, it's as different from a bicycle or motorcycle as the original personal computers were from their lumbering, mainframe predecessors.

Control
In our tests, we rode the Segway HT in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Zipping along on the little platform was so steady and comfortable, we quickly forgot how much technology was at work to keep us balanced. The Segway HT moves forward with cues from your body language--the subtle leaning you use to balance yourself while walking or running. When you lean forward, the Segway HT goes forward. A walking lean produces a walking rate, a steeper running lean can bring the machine to its top speed of 12.5 mph. The Segway HT stops when you right yourself again.

Steering is controlled separately with a small twist-grip on the left handlebar. The Segway HT's two-wheeled design makes it quite agile--it can do sharp turns and turn completely in place. Sharper turns require slight leaning into the turns, as you'd expect, but the Segway HT helps by actively regulating turn responsiveness based on your speed. One small complaint: using a throttle-like control for turns instead of acceleration did take some getting used to, but the inconvenience was minor and went away over time.

Overall, we were surprised how quickly we were able to get comfortable on the Segway HT. A novice can be underway in seconds (with supervision) and ascending ramps and turning figure eights in minutes. After training and a few hours of use, a rider should feel comfortable with a wide range of activities.

Riding
The Segway HT moves briskly along on both paved and rough terrain, taking ruts and potholes bumpily but with no loss of control, even for the beginner. Modest hills were ascended with ease and without much discernable effort. All things told, the Segway HT seemed rugged enough to provide reliable transportation in pedestrian environments ranging from rural trails to the sidewalks of a congested city. And utility aside, it's worth stating that the element of machine-assisted balance was a continuous delight. We simply had more control over our movements than we previously could have imagined possible. This was particularly true on downhill rides, where our body language had a degree of command over gravity so unusual that it produced a dreamy, floating feeling.

The Segway HT is not a medical device; if you can't easily stand upright or endure some jostling on varied terrain, it will not solve these problems for you. But while the Segway HT cannot provide balance that the rider doesn't already have, its responsiveness brings a subtle beauty to the rider's movements. We watched more experienced riders start, stop, swoop, and turn as gracefully as figure skaters. In fact, the machine's ease of use could create some overconfidence. The Segway HT has not suspended the laws of physics--its wheels need traction. While the machine will keep itself level under almost any situation we could imagine, a careless rider who drops a wheel over a curb, or tries to turn too quickly on a slippery surface, certainly could take a tumble. Segway advises that riders wear a safety helmet (like a bicycle helmet) and start out in the Beginner mode before moving on to the faster settings.

User-Friendly Design
The Segway HT's controls are simple. A single round display on the handlebars shows either a smiley face (meaning "get on") or a frown face ("get off"). A graphic surrounding the face indicates the battery level. The Segway has no brakes--slowing down involves the same process as acceleration--and its gentle rate precludes any need for a speedometer. We timed its startup speed from the off position to ready to ride: pressing an encrypted "key" to the key port (the key looks like a large watch battery on a plastic fob), hitting the start button, and waiting for the smiley face to come up took a little more than one second.

This machine is clearly designed for close interaction with pedestrians. Its footprint is only a bit wider than a large man, so we were able to do things like ride comfortably in an elevator with another Segway HT rider and a pedestrian, with an almost disappointing lack of bustle or incident. The machine can haul 75 pounds of cargo and still support a 250-pound person, though you'll need touse the HT's soon-to-come mounted accessory bags for any serious buying trip.

Usability
Having ridden a Segway HT, we think almost anyone would be delighted to try this machine. Inevitably, however, one must ask about how usable it is. Clearly, it isn't a car: it won't carry multiple passengers or much luggage, go long distances, or protect you from the elements. Still, we thought of many circumstances where the Segway HT could be a fun and practical alternative to other modes of transportation. We can see potential users as regular folks traveling to and from work each day, students and professors in college towns, city dwellers who take many short trips, retirees in Sunbelt resort communities, vacationers traveling with RVs, and people with easy access to nature trails and walkways.

Well-Built Construction
We had the opportunity to look into the guts of the Segway HT in its pre-assembled state. Inside it was clean and simple, and the few moving parts, such as the gears, struck us as rugged and well made. There are no cooling fans; the circuits and engine are cooled through their contact with the platform's heat-drawing aluminum casing. Each finished HT is tested both at the software level and for quality riding on an obstacle course in the assembly plant. See the technical specifications for more information.

Conclusion
We're convinced that anyone who tries a Segway HT will be smiling in minutes. The other advantage is that early purchasers will certainly be the first on their blocks to have one. But for how long? We think we'll all be seeing much more of the Segway HT in the future. --Erik Hammen

Pros:

  • Very high build quality
  • Environmentally friendly, extremely energy efficient
  • Requires little storage space
  • Newness factor--you've never ridden anything like this before
  • Fun to ride, and looks cool

Cons:

  • Purchase price may be prohibitive for many potential users, though the cost is partially offset long term by nominal upkeep
  • Laws regarding legal riding areas (sidewalk versus street) vary from state to state
  • Minor inconvenience: rubber plug-in protectors on the machines seemed a bit loose, flopping around a bit on the more rigorously used machines, inconsistent with generally excellent build standards
  • Accessories, like carrying bags and lights, will not be available until spring 2003

From the Manufacturer
The Segway Human Transporter is the first transportation product to stand, balance, and move in the same way we do. It harnesses a unique technology called "dynamic stabilization"--the result of more than a decade of research, development and testing, and tens of thousands of hours in field trials--to constantly monitor and balance the Segway HT and rider.

The Segway HT allows riders to travel short distances in dense environments that would be prohibitive to other transportation devices. An amazingly elegant design makes the Segway HT a part of you, sensing subtle changes in your balance and responding immediately. The Segway HT has a level of maneuverability never before seen on wheels--it can balance in place, move forwards and backwards, and turn in place.

Purchase of a Segway HT includes a training session on its operation and features, in order to properly prepare a new rider for safe and enjoyable operation of this new technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review by an Actual Owner,
I own a Segway, unlike many of the silly people who have posted thus far. I have been delighted with my purchase from day one. Segway, LLC has the BEST customer support around and are always friendly and helpful. If ever there is a problem with your HT (and I've yet to encounter anything major) they dutifully- and quickly- respond!

Riding your HT requires a little training, it takes a few days to learn to let go and allow the computer to balance you! What a sensation, though! It's put a smile on everyone's face who's tried it. Older persons seem quite taken with these, it allows for more personal freedom when walking is too difficult and driving is not practical. Younger persons, such as myself, find them economical and environmentally friendly. They don't ruin lawns, emit anything, and make no noise.

Yeah, the price is steep, but then so is the new 2004 Porshe line. This, though, doesn't give off emmisions and costs as little as 14 cents a day to charge and use. Be wary, jealous people try to pass laws to ban them.

They are small, easier to manuver than a car or bike, slower than most marathon runners, and are perfect on sunny days in a big city. Just remember to give pedestrians the right of way!

Go get yours, or ask somebody (like me) for a demo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for Small Miracles!
I LOVE my HT! I cannot express how much I love this thing. Finally, no more walking! I hate walking. Now all my troubles have disappeared. I don't even walk to the car anymore. I drive my segway right on out to the car, my driver sets me in my seat, stashes the HT someplace and off we go. I even ride it around my house. No more hurrying to the kitchen for a snack during a commercial, now I just hop on my HT and ZOOM, I'm there! I find shopping around town to be a breeze. I zip into a store, browse, buy and zip out. Just to warn you, though, most store owners frown upon bringing the HT inside, but I find that if you possess strong powers of persuasion you won't encounter many problems. My only concern is the lack of horn (or maybe I just can't find it). I find that having to raise my voice to shoo people off the sidewalk to be a real problem. If I had a horn I could pleasantly beep the bothersome peds out of the way. Riding the HT is such a thrill. I love the wind in my hair and the freedom from that infernal walking! I even took my HT on a hike! The trail was too steep to ride, so I just puttered around the parking lot until my companions returned. Now that I have my HT I find that I enjoy activities I once despised. Such as going along with my partner on her daily runs. I can now speed along side her shouting words of encouragment. I really do love my HT and highly recommend getting one for yourself, you WON'T regret it!!

"A toy for rich people which does not improve human condition, November 16, 2003
Reviewer: An electronics fan from USA
I did not like the way this was first announced to the world on Good Morning America. They got lots of free advertising on the morning talk shows and I think that was wrong, there are many other good products in the world, first of their kind, inventions that help sick people, and they don't get free advertising. It's not fair. Sure it's unique but it's not something that helps to save lives, or help sick people, or anything like that. Why is the inventor of this so special that he should get free advertising? It's just an expensive toy for rich people.

I also did not like the way this was in the Fraser TV show. But I guess it belongs with that class of people, it belongs with a bunch of rich snobs. The thing with this device, since it is so expensive and portable, small compared to a bicycle, it would be easy to hijack so anyone who buys one should be willing to have it stolen, you'll be out 4 grand and bicycle thief's will be able to have a new career. "

To address the concerns of theft of this reviewer, each Segway HT comes with a set of three keys. Each one unlocks a greater ability of the Segway. But each set of keys is unique to the Segway! It has a 64 bit key code that works only for that Segway. So what's the theif gonna do? Oh wow! He's got a Segway but no way to work it!!! Well it's real useful to him now isn't it? What's he gonna do? Just roll it around??? Oh wow!!! I don't think any idiot would try to steal this... of course then again maybe you would.... ... Read more

Editorial Review

Building on the success of the amateur range of Coolpix cameras, Nikon has introduced the Coolpix 5700 in an attempt to bridge the gap between the amateur and professional markets. This time around Nikon has gone for a semicompact feel, combining an almost palm-size unit with a powerful features one would expect to find on a high-specification midrange digital camera.

swing-out screen of the CoolPix 5700
The swiveling, swing-out screen on the Coolpix 5700 makes it easier to frame self-portrait, overhead, and floor-level shots.
The Coolpix 5700 comes equipped with an automatic pop-up flash, plus a hot-shoe for additional flash units. The bundled NikonView 5 browser software makes it simple to download, organize, and print images. The package includes a lens cap, camera strap, 16 MB CompactFlash card, AV cable, USB cable, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and battery charger. It is compatible with CompactFlash memory cards (Type I or II), as well as IBM Microdrives.

The 5700 allows the use of the viewfinder or the LCD monitor (which rotates through 180 degrees after it's opened out) for framing a picture, providing full freedom of movement and allowing you to capture a picture at any angle--no matter how obtuse. Zoom capability has been increased on the 5700, and the camera features an impressive 8x optical zoom, the results from which are good at all levels and distances. Supporting a maximum resolution of 2,560 x 1,920 (4.91 megapixels), an ISO range of 100 to 800, and a top shutter speed of 1/4,000, this camera is definitely a good all-rounder, providing you with great flexibility under different conditions.

The 5700 performs admirably, producing results way above expectation. Color balance is good, and the overall results are of a very high quality. We did have a middling complaint about its size, which actually feels a bit on the small size. With an extra couple of centimeters added to the bodywork, the 5700 would have felt much easier to handle and control in everyday usage. The position of the camera strap attachment also seems awkward, being as it is located on the upper right quadrant of the lens housing, making it sometimes difficult to gain a good grip when in use.

These criticisms aside, the Coolpix 5700 is bound to be another sure-fire hit for Nikon, balancing the huge 5-megapixel image size against a competitive pricepoint. For those not yet ready to move up to the professional level of 35mm digital SLRs such as the Nikon D100, the Coolpix 5700 proves to be a worthy alternative. --Elly Russell

Pros:

  • Palm-sized 5-megapixel camera with a powerful feature set
  • Includes sizeable 16 MB memory card--can accept IBM Microdrives
  • 8x optical zoom

Cons:

  • Could be slightly larger for easier handling

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera for a former 35mm SLR amateur photographer
This camera is great, some people complain about being too complicated, but I want to tell you what this camera is.

This camera is the top of the line for Nikon prosumer cameras, so shows advanced features other cameras of its kind does not have. It is the last step before buying a professional digital camera, being professional an 'interchangeable lens SLR digital camera'.

To fully understand this camera you should have owned 2 cameras before. 1) A 35mm SLR 2) An entry level digital camera

if you have that background you'll find the 5700 just great, but if you don't, then you'll be stuck wondering what is an f stop or why you cannot (actually should not) send raw images by e-mail to your friends.

Because its lenses cannot be interchanged they must be treated carefully. One of my next adquisitions will be the Nikon 5597 67MM FILTER ADAPTER RING, a 67mm UV filter and a 67mm lens cap.

I would also recommend getting the 'Nikon Camera Case for Nikon Coolpix 5700 Digital Camera'

5-0 out of 5 stars The ALMOSt pro Digital camera for under [$]
This camera rivals the [$] pro cameras on the market. Add a 1 Gig IBM Microdrive and you can take 134 photos in the high res. Raw format which will easily make a perfect 13x19 print that is true photo quality. The minimum density is fantastic so skin tones are beautiful, I was shooting with a Nikon N80 and scanning the transparencies with a Canon 4000 DPI scanner. That is both expensive and time consuming. This camera is about 80% as sharp as that combo...but with a better contrast range! My average session with a model is 6-8 rolls. With 2 microdrives I can achieve that quaintly with no computer necessary! And the cost of a single drive is recouped in 3 sessions (Film and processing costs eliminated).
Cons: Horrible low light sensitivity...Slow saving in the HiRes modes and the camera controls TOTALLY lock up while the cache is written to the disk/drive (after 3 consecutive shots in HiRes ONLY). You can shoot, but not change ANYTHING manually. This problem disappears in the JPEG modes which are fine for many applications. Autofocus is slow at extreme telephoto setting and in low light. AND the shutter release button delay is intolerable when using flash or in low light.
So if you want to do a lot of action photography pick another camera. If however, you want the sharpest image for the least money then buy the Nikon Coolpix 5700. And buy several extra batteries and as large a storage device as you can afford.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this camera to death
This is my second digital camera and it is the best. My mom has the 35mm Nikon and she loves it. Nikon is the best name in photagraphy and it shows. I just printed out my first photos and i am so impressed with the quality. I will never buy an other brand of cameras. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, there isn't much choice out there.
I used to own a Casio BOSS and loved it.
I had a Palm and loved it.
I had a Blackberry and loved it.
I had a Jornada 565 and loved it.

I bought the e740, and well... I hate it.

It was reassuring to read these on-line reviews, because it appears that everyone has the same problems that I do.

The sad thing is, at this point in time, there is no competition for the device. None.

If you want built-in Wifi, 64 megs RAM, and room for extra memory (SD card) AND have a free CF slot for GPS, Modem, etc., this unit delivers.

BUT what terrible design!

It's akin to a prototype that is not ready to be manufactured.

Some examples:

Battery Life - One hour of wireless surfing! Terrible. This is a joke. It's so easy to run out of juice, even without wireless.

Speaker - Worst of any Pocket PC I've seen.

ActiveSync - Drops connections. Very disappointing. I've had more dropped connections in 1 week than in 2 years with my other PocketPCs.

Built-in features - Severely lacking. Look at the Jornada.. you could program each button to do different things when they are held down for three seconds, and other such goodies. Not here.

Fragility - Really bad. EVERY other PDA nowadays has some form of screen protector. Not this. It's only matter of time before something nasty happens.

Ergonomics - Hard to hold. Not very comfortable. What a bizarre design. Awkward.

Speed - VERY disappointing. Movies played FLAWLESSLY on my 565. They have TONS of dropped frames on the e740. So much for the 400MHz CPU!

CF Card - Seems to be slower than the old Pocket PC's. Also a huge pain to insert. You actually need the stylus!! What's with that?

Record button - BEWARE! As a volunteer ambulance tech, I keep this unit on my belt in a case, next to my cell phone. I went to use it midway through my 6 hour shift to write some patient info, and... the battery was DEAD! Reason? That darn record button kept getting hit on my belt. There is no way to disable it. I spoke to Toshiba today.

Software stability - None. Seems like I'm always doing a hard reset for one reason or another.

Screen - Not as bright as the others, and not uniform. Look closely at night. There is noticeable half-inch vertical striping.

Did I mention the Record button draining the batteries?

So, my bottom line advice to those people looking to buy a PocketPC.......:

If you NEED one now, go for it. However, you WILL be annoyed. You WILL envy your friends who buy one 5 months from now. You WILL agree with me that this is a work-in progress. But, like I said, there is simply no competition when it comes to two card slots and Wi-Fi.

If you already have a working device - Please wait!! Please! I HAD to buy this one because I sold my Jornada. So I am pretty much stuck with this annoying Toshiba. But if you have a trusty Palm or Ipaq or Jornada.. W A I T ! Don't run out and but this flawed unit! Wait for "version 2.0"!!

I hope this review was helpful to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best device for me
When shopping for a new PDA, I considered a broad range.

Palm Tungsten T - Good screen, integrated Bluetooth so I can sync with my Mac, fast, and very compact. However, after using Palm OS, Pocket PC, and Linux over the last years, I prefer the flexibility of the other PDAs I tried.

Sony Clie - Nice design, integrated keyboard, fast, nice screen. This almost swayed me to take the Palm OS route. The device has tremendous geek appeal. However, the weight (as compared to the e740), memory stick, and proprietary CF slot turned me off.

iPaq 545x - Beautiful screen, integrated Bluetooth and WiFi. Lots of expansion options. No integrated CF slot, and expensive.

Toshiba e740 - industrial design I like, integrated WiFi and SD. Reflective screen not as pretty as the iPaq, but the CF slot is a winner. It can also act as a USB host, which makes connecting with peripherals easier. Overall, the winner for me. With the various rebates, I was able to buy this one for $450.

3-0 out of 5 stars E 740 problems
This is a a great PDA execpt for one thing. It is has NO built-in memory to save stored data. The E 750 took care of this problem and Toshiba essentially stifed the owner of the orignal -including my letter to them which was written before one year warrantee. They never even answered my letter.

Their answer was to give you a $40 credit towards their old defective E740. Good customer relations - Toshiba ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Yard-Man AutoDrive lawn tractor should fulfill all your tractor dreams. Perched on the broad and absurdly comfortable canary-yellow tractor seat, cool drink at your side in the drink holder (a most enviable feature), you can survey your land with just pride in luxurious ease. Corrugated foam seat cushions and foam lower-back support provide comfort for your derriere and lumbar region, and strong shock absorbers under the seat keep the ride from jarring your bones (or spilling your refreshment). Rubber foot treads keep your feet from sliding about, and all the controls are an easy hand or foot reach away. Ignition, choke, and light switch are all prominent on the dash, as are the throttle controls (going all the way from turtle to hare). The blade height lever, on your right-hand side as you sit in the driver's seat, is delightfully easy to operate, deftly adjusting between six settings. The transmission gear to your left shifts between forward, neutral, and reverse. Three sharp blades keep your lawn trim, and you can choose whether you'd rather mulch or side disperse. Other features resemble those of your favorite car, and then some. The dash sports an indicator monitor, reminding you to depress the brake pedal or add oil, when necessary; the AutoDrive pedal enhances your power control, allowing you to accelerate with autolike ease, while the hour meter records how long you've been cruising--we mean working. The 20-horsepower engine, the top of the line when it comes to home lawn mower power, can carry you regally about the land you sweated for, but no longer need to sweat on. And best of all, it comes completely assembled. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor customer service
The low rating on this product is aimed at the customer service/warranty associated with the product group. I bought a MTD lawn tractor 5 months ago and within 31/2 months the thread on the shoulder bolt striped out resulting in the idler pulley falling out of position. I called MTD for the location of a authorized service location in my area. The automated answering machine gave me the name and number for the service dealer. I confirmed with the service provider that the defect was a warranty repair. It took a month to get the tractor fixed and when I went to pick it up I was told that it wasn't under warranty and if I wanted to pick up the tractor I would have to pay for the repairs. I reminded him that he had confirmed warranty at the time I brought it in. At that time he said it was to hard to procees the warranty. I contacted MTD and the service rep said he would contact the service provider and call me back. He never returned the call so I called again. This time a service rep told me that they didn't tell me were to take the tractor for repair and that the choice had been mine. I told him that the automated system for service had that dealer as the authorized service provider in this area. He said he didn't care what it said, that the choice was still mine for where I took it. He did say he would call them to get the other side of the complaint and call me back. I went ahead and paid the charges for the repair because by that time I needed it. I did get the nut and bolt that had been replaced and after measuring them found that both components were grossly out of industrial specifications. The thread engagement for that combination should have been about 77%, the bolt and nut used on the tractor had less than 50%. With a third less thread emgagement the bolt would stripe at a much lower torque than normal. The components used on this tractor can be manufactured cheaper and faster than standard fasteners. The service rep from MTD, surprisingly, did call back and told me that the reason the warranty was not allowed was because I hadn't supplied Proof of Purchase. I told him I had and that the date was on the receipt I received from the service provider. I informed him of measurements on the defective material and the impact on the failure mode. Some of the numbers were technical in nature so I told him he should confirm them with his engineering dept. His main concern was that I had the defective parts and he wanted to know how I got them. I told him I had just ask for them. He said he would investigate further and call me back. Guess what? No call. It's also the last MTD product I ever buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Integrity and Speed
I was reluctant at first to make this purchase over the net. I am, however, sure glad I did. The process went fast and painless. The equipment was exactly as I expected plus more. The price was much better than if I purchesed this lawn tractor locally. The speed of delivery and the friendly help of the delivery personnel was a big plus. I have already used this equipment and find it to be of good quality and ease of use.
Keep up the good work. Lastly, I've noticed a customer service availability, I don't need them, all is fine here.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the lot ...
I looked far and wide; did research; tried this and others.
I finally bought this item over a year ago.
I have made hundreds of DVDs of videos that I have shot myself.
This machine makes DVDs that can be seen on most all DVD players manufactured after April 2000. I shoot dance recitals, weddings, parties, and just plain family events using a video camera that records on Mini-DV tapes. Then, I play the tapes on either the camera or a JVC SR-VS20U using a firewire/DV cable into the PRV9000. The results are spectacular and profitable. Avoid the other formats unless you want to be the only person to play your finalized DVDs. Until a faster, multiple disk recordable machine comes out; this is the one to have. The best part is the input signal is NTSC! That means you can use it just like a standard video recorder using almost any signal instead of converting from an AVI file to Mpeg 2 before putting the file on the DVD disks. BTW; the media has dropped dramatically in price to almost [money] a disk for 2 hour DVD-R blank. I have been using Mitsui disks but have begun to use Maxell with good results. Good luck. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not Not-Worthy!
... these big box sets are not for the casual fan. The price tags are pretty steep but you get a big hunka Elvis for the money. And it's true that some of these CDs are hard to find for some reason, especially the interview and essential series CDs. Also, I like the big poster (in the red box) and the suede cases themselves, but I'm a die-hard fan and collector of all-things (well, a-lot-of-things) Elvis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reconsider, Baby
The 2 mammoth 30CD box sets released by RCA ('The Collection' aka 'The Red Suede Collection', and 'The Blue Suede Shoes Collection') have been harshly criticized by some Elvis fans as unnecessary and just another in a very long line of "cashing in" projects by his record label. And while that is probably true - repackaging old material for a quick profit is something that has never been beneath RCA (or the Colonel, or Elvis, for that matter) - let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater. First of all, RCA should get a little credit for the many worthy Elvis projects and box sets released in the past few years. Sure, they were money makers but most of them were put together in a first class manner - unlike much of the stuff released during Elvis's lifetime.

Neither 30CD box contains anything new other than the 2 interview CDs (w/Elvis, M/M Presley, & The Colonel) both of which are interesting and somewhat rare (there are also a couple of keepsakes: a nice poster, a first-day issue Elvis envelope & stamp, and the suede boxes themselves). The CDs included in each box, however, are some of his best, including several that are now either out-of-print or very hard-to-find. For the red box that means the expanded versions of the first six movies (when his soundtracks actually kicked), the expanded 'Elvis Is Back!' (always one of his best, now remarkably improved with the addition of the 6 tracks from the 3 singles recorded at the same time as the album), 'Back In Memphis' (part 2 of the excellent American Studios sessions), the single disc version of 'That's The Way It Is', and 'Today' (one of his best studio efforts in the 70's). For the blue box, the main draws after the interview CD are the hard-to-find 'A Hundred Years From Now' and 'Such A Night', volumes 4 and 6, respectively, in the great 'Essential Elvis' series of alternate takes and unreleased recordings. Volume 6 is the best in the series so far.

So, both of the 30CD box sets have more to offer than is apparent at first glance, although the price tag is pretty hefty. But unless RCA decides to reissue some of these titles in the future, this may be the only place to find them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why postpone the inevitable?
Any Elvis fan will tell you that once you get started, you'll have to have it all, or at least as much as you can. This extra special set allows you to get everything you need at once, as well as some special extras that you just can't find anywhere else. Be the first on your block. . . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Numbers Don't Tell the Story
Most people who buy a pc do so for predictable uses: wordprocessing, games, internet, and off the shelf software. Even for those who deem themselves power users often find that one pc is pretty much like the other. The tiebreaker in the decision to buy is often a function of price and aesthetic appeal. The GATEWAY 700X desktop is a harmonious blend of the very best qualities that one could seek in a computer. I have a Master's in Computer Technology so I already knew its potential before I bought it, but when I had a chance to put it through it paces over an extended period of time, I was enormously impressed. First the obvious: it did whatever I asked it to in quick time. Whenever a potential buyer checks out computers, he most often looks at the CPU speed as a barometer of how fast the CPU works. This GATEWAY 700X boasts a 2.533 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, but it is not for that which invests it with lightning. Of equal importance to the CPU numbers is the less recognized internal bus speed. A modest bus number is 133. The GATEWAY 700X hums along at 266, a number sufficiently quick to make even jaded power users smile. When I go online, from the time I start to the time that I am ready to chat is measured in seconds. On my previous Compaq Presario, I had to wait nearly four full minutes for that. Computer salesman like to trump the size of a pc's hard disk storage. When I first bought a pc more than 10 years ago, it had 10 GB for storage, and I never came close to using it all. This GATEWAY has 80 GB, so it's nice to know that if you plan to input a database of several million items, you need not worry about exceeding your hard drive's capacity. The 18 inch LCD flat-panel monitor presents both text and visuals with crystal clarity--no eyestrain here! The speakers are far more sensitive to nuances in sound than you might be used to. The CD/DVD combo works quite well. The numbers bandied about for such devices (48x/40x/12x for the CD and 16x for the DVD) simply mean that what you see on the screen is about a clear as you can get. Not many users care about such arcane concepts as expansion slots. I'll be willing to bet that most do not even know what an expansion slot is, but for those readers of this review who do, rest assured that this pc can be bulked up to rival Colossus in THE FORBIN PROJECT. Further, for those with digital video on the mind, the GATEWAY 700X is a sterling, reliable performer. Finally, the GATEWAY 700X even looks good. Its ergonomic appeal is not unlike the feeling that you might have felt the first time you slipped behind the wheel of your first Corvette. What all the numbers in the salesman's brochures boil down to is this: you can probably find any number of computers that are comparable, but only a few can often first rate performance and reliability at a price that won't bust your wallet. The GATEWAY 700X is just such a computer. ... Read more

Zenith D52WLCD 52" LCD Projection HDTV-Ready TV
Average Customer Review: 4.82 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $2,999.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

If you've considered purchasing a projection television but were disappointed by the bulky size, depth, and weight, look no further. Zenith's D52WLCD is lightweight, yet it delivers a breathtaking 52-inch diagonal high-definition picture. (An outboard set-top box is required for high-definition broadcast reception.) The set's nine-element lens system offers precision center-to-corner focus and true-to-life images. Typical projection televisions converge (or focus) their picture tubes on a single focus point in the center of the screen. As a consequence, images tend to separate or blur toward the screen edges. Zenith's nine-point digital convergence uses nine focus points, so the view from top to bottom and left to right is just as enjoyable as the view in the center of the screen.

LCD panels are free from two concerns that plague traditional projection sets: phosphor burn-in, which imprints a "ghost" image on your screen after holding a static image too long; and convergence errors (discrepancies in beam alignment), which require a service technician to realign the projection picture tubes. LCD projection televisions don't require alignment, so you don't have to plan for this kind of service. The D52WLCD also offers 3:2 pulldown detection--a handy feature when using DVD players that offer 3:2 pulldown in their progressive-scan video signals. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture on your TV.

The set's built-in stereo speakers are backed by 15 watts each. Input and output jacks include: one RGB (VGA/HD-DBS) 15-pin input, one high-resolution component-video input, one composite-video input (Y, PB, PR), two sets of S-video inputs, and one set of front-panel video jacks (to accommodate a camcorder or gaming consoles). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice product
Got this baby a week or so ago and it's great. I almost bought the 50" Sony which I had seen at the store but a last minute search revealed some issue with the bulbs burning out so that scared me enough to choose the Zenith. I'd wanted a plasma originally, but the quality of this picture is comparable to a $6,000-$7,000 plasma of the same size. Nice.

The HD programming while limited in availability looks outstanding. I thought the brightness levels might be an issue in a bright room like I have but it's not. The TV is surprisingly slim, and not particularly heavy for a set of this size.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Plasma at less than Half the Price!
If you've done your research then you know the benefits of LCD over Plasma, and this TV (monitor actually) is the best of the best. We did our shopping over several months before settling on this masterpiece, and after hosting a Super Bowl party with this bohemith as the center attraction, we're the talk of the neighborhood! Amazing picture clarity and brightness (even in a bright room)! We sit at home and ooh and aah over our latest and greatest purchase...the best addition to our home in years. We FULLY FULLY recommend this Zenith over all else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!
I had alot of time to research TV's. We just built an addition
that will serve as a media/rec room. I wanted to buy a tv that we could surf the internet and play video games on without worrying about burn in. The picture quality is just as good as the Sony and Panasonic and is 2" bigger. It is very stylish. The pictures dont do it justice. You can't see the front speakers like in the pics. I could not find a picture of the matching stand anywhere online, but ordered it any way. The stand is just as stylish. It has 2 heavy glass shelves for components that are open and do not have doors. The TV only takes 15-20 secs to turn on. My kids won't let me near it. They have been playing Xbox on it non stop. The built in speakers are very good. I purchased mine for $2,499 right here on Amazon. $1000 cheaper than Bestbuy. It goes on sale periodically. I recommend waiting for such a sale. It was delivered in perfect condition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Jukebox that Could
Pros
+ 20 GB
+ Simple File transfer
+ Size of a cassette tape
+ Holds 200+ albums
+ Can also be used as a portable, swappable, or spare drive

Cons
- Non-intuitive User interface
- Weak Playlist feature
- Heavy (not good for running)
- Throw away the headphones and get yourself some Sony earbuds

20 GB...it makes those 128 MB players seem like they're from the 90's. 1/150th of the amount of space.

Definitely the best feature is the ease of connectivity to any NT based system (Windows 2000/NT/XP). Most computers that I have connected to do not require any drivers to be installed. Plus, the Jukebox shows up within Explorer just like a hard drive icon would. Copying music to and from the Recorder is as easy as dragging songs, albums, or playlists into it.

When I bought this I thought that I could fit my entire CD collection onto it. Well maybe not (since I have a ton of CDs and downloaded MP3s), but it sure holds enough to constantly have fresh music. I record typically at a 128kbps rate, and I have about 200 albums on my recorder.

The user interface is my only complaint. Sonic and other companies have done a much better job at having an intuitive interface. Archos, unfortunately, saved space by limiting the number of buttons. For instance, the Stop button is the Off button tapped once (hold it to turn off). These little things take a while to figure out, but once you do, it's gold.

One last dealmaker is that unlike most MP3 players, Archos can handle ANY file types. Therefore, I store Word Docs, email files, pictures, videos etc. in my Jukebox and bring them between work and home. It's better than a zip drive and holds 20,000 diskettes. Sure you can't play the pictures on the Recorder (there's another model for that), but being able to bring them all to your friends place rocks.

For the price, buy it! (Keep your eyes out for the 40GB or photo/camera version though).

4-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable product!
My Jukebox Recorder 20 is a wonderful product! I received it as a birthday gift, and it's become indispensable after just one day.

Here's a list of pros, in no particular order:
1) Works equally well with Windows 2000 (work) and Mac OSX (home).
*Note: this used to be the case, but now it only works with Windows and OS 9...not X. Don't know what happened, but Archos' tech support was not the slightest bit helpful.
2) The sound quality is great, and changing the sound settings adds a lot to the unit.
3) The drag-and-drop method is simple for anyone to use, which means...
4) Updating the firmware is a breeze.
5) Ability to record directly to the unit is a huge plus.
6) The buttons do exactly what you think they will do.
7) The storage capability: 20 gigs of music/files is great!
8) Definitely small enough to carry in a purse; I'll take mine everywhere.
9) The bundled MusicMatch software isn't a necessity for folks who'd rather use another program to create MP3s, but it is a very nice program.

The only reason I don't give the product 5 stars is because of little things:
1) The interface is not as elegant as the interface I've seen on the Apple iPod.
2) The manual is inadequate. However, the Archos website has a lot of helpful support information.
3) The headphones are not great quality, but they fold up pretty compactly (which is convenient) and you can always purchase your choice of headphones separately.

Overall, I would recommend this product to any music fan or anyone who needs to swap files from one computer to another.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of ARCHOS
I have purchased 3 different Archos MP3 Players and they all have 1 thing in common within a year they are broke. I like the features and the ease of handling with their product but the quality is just not there. The Studio 20 is a paperweight. The 2nd I gave away and the 3rd one Broke today. Their support is inferior and takes forever. The batteries constantly die out. Good product just bad engineering. Dont make the same mistake I did it will be a waste of money. 1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid Harmon Kardon CDR 26
Aprroximately 1 1/2 years ago I bought a new Harmon Kardon CDR 26 (CD recorder). It worked well for the first year, recently though it has been skipping during recording and playback. This skipping problem occurs frequently and is especially annoying during the recording process. In the middle of a recording the laser will skip, basically ruining the recording.
The malfunction only occurs on the right side (record side) of the player. The only reason I bought this unit was to record. It has been a huge disappointment and not worth the hassle or the money ($150-$200) to repair.

1-0 out of 5 stars Harmon Kardon CDR 26
Right side laser (record side) skips frequently during recording and playback. This problem occurred about 1 year after purchase ($400). Still skipped after cleaning laser. I am very disappointed with this unit and would not recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars avoid HK recorders at all cost.
Do not purchase any model beginning "CDR" made by harmon kardon. I manage a professional audio duplication facility and have been quite shocked at the downright poor performance of HK's CDR30 and CDR26 units.

-Brand new unit malfunctioned, unable to open tray. I sent it back RMA, and received ANOTHER BROKEN UNIT in exchange.

-After light use for two weeks, a different BRAND NEW machine also failed to open both doors.

That's three terrible machines, at a cost of $1200. Please do yourselves a favor and buy a unit from Pioneer. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Paying for a name.
I bought a Bose Lifestyle 35 system in Denver, CO, at the Cherry Creek Mall Bose Outlet. Prior to purchase, I was brought into a sound studio in the store to listen to "the system". It sounded pretty impressive. I brought the unit home, hooked it up and listened. Honestly, I had a hard time telling whether the Bose system or my television speakers were on. Very disappointed. I turned up the volume a bit (about 75% of max) and the center cube speaker blew. Very disappointed. I did some research and learned a lot. Bose does not publish a lot of the specs one would expect to be published on any audio system, let alone such an expensive one. People in the field think poorly of Bose quality and value, period. I called Bose Headquarters, the store in Denver, and a local dealer inquiring about returning the unit. I was told I must drive the unit back to Denver (250 miles from my home, over the mountains, in the snow) to return it, which I did. When I did, the store manager informed me that there is a mail-in return policy and I didn't need to waste an entire day, let alone drive so far in such conditions. He asked if there was anything else I was unhappy about (besides the salesgirl not informing me that I was to receive a free Wave Radio with the purchase; by the way, I liked the Wave Radio a lot but it is also overpriced), and I asked him if the system in the demo studio in the store is the same system I purchased. I mean, after all, they shine pretty spotlights on it and completely lead you to believe that's what you're listening to. "I don't believe anyone said that to you, did they?" was my response. Unbelievable. It turns out that what you hear in the studio is a specially recorded track (made by the designers of the system to accentuate the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of the system) played on an $8000 digital tape player! I subsequently purchased a $500 Onkyo 6.1 channel (not 5.1, like the Bose) system from Circuit City and am completely thrilled. It sounds FAR better than the Bose, for 1/7 the price. Goodbye, Bose, forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is simply amazing.
I'm really not sure what to say about the bad reviews of this product. I can't imagine why anyone would not be impressed by the sound coming from these tiny cube speakers. As they did not mention it in their reviews, I can only assume that the people who were unhappy with their products did not read the instructions (it is fairly simple to figure out) and play the setup DVD that came with it. Before running the AdaptIQ program, the system sounds decent. Then I ran the software and the system literally came alive and adjusted itself perfectly to my room (it's an odd "L" shape and I was getting an unbalanced sound at first).

In terms of music listening, I have not heard anything that matched the spaciousness in this price range. I listened to a lot of products and the Lifestyle system blew me away. Its music processing changed a regular stereo CD into a surround sound experience which was 20 times better than a traditional dolby processing in a traditional receiver. This also works well with TV and radio.

If you are looking for a great sounding product with an elegant appearance and a simple setup, then go with a Bose Lifestyle system. Just run the setup software. :P

2-0 out of 5 stars Junk System
I bought one from circuit city and hooked up in my home. In Store, it sounded great, but in home it is not really. What I realized is because of the selective clips, it sounded great in stores.

In the Bose Outlet Stores, they will show a demo in a soundproof room with proper speaker adjustment. It requires a kind of closed rectangle shape room. In real life, not all the apartments will be having this kind of living room. That is why you wont find any bose stores in town.

Many of the remote control functions are missing in the system including Closed Caption, Slow, XX Frame forwarding, eject and etc. All these are there in $35 DVD Player.

Overall I dont recommend this system. I had Panasonic scht900, paid about $500. Definately there is diffrence between the panasonic one and bose one, but I dont feel its worth for that money. Dont go for it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars There are better kits available.
I have been a " DeWalt" user for years, and have been happy the entire time. That is until I purchased the 5 peice kit. It was purchased in September of '02 and I have had to replace the entire kit with the exeption of the recip saw. I doubt i will be making any more DeWalt cordless purchases. There ARE better kits at better prices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power at your convenience
Tough call deciding to buy this DeWalt kit. At the time I did not need the reciprocating saw and if another manufacturer offered similar kit with cordless planer in its place then I would have bought the competitor instead. Good thing that it was also possible to purchase a 230V charger. Some things you don't think you will need until you have it, now every item has been used except the in vehicle charger. Tools are stored indoors and when taking tools to a job I would have to assess the job and decide what to bring for the day. Space is limited by a small stationwagon, as up to recently the tools only served for a home enthusiast, now they have to work for a living. Yesterday, didn't think I needed the mains Bosch reciprocating saw so it stayed at home. Trouble was there were wooden rail sleepers to saw up on site. None of the blades from the DeWalt kit would cut deep enough. Nevermind. Used the circular saw to saw cuts top and bottom. Finish off with the recrirocating saw what the circular saw did not reach. Well I was impressed. Or course it required a few changes of battery so good job I bought one extra on top of the supplied 3 batteries. Still have not used the vechicle charger yet. Next optional extras on the shopping list would be longer blades for the reciprocating saw if there is one, smaller cases to ease loading and unloading to the car.90% of the time I am only using the drill, jig-saw, and charger. I pray that DeWalt will come up with a cordless planer before I have to choose between Bosch or DeWalt. Better hurry up DeWalt because so far you are winning because you have an in car charger. Bosch has the tools I want although not collected into a kit form yet. But in all seriousness I would only need a planer 5% of the time and anyone getting this DeWalt kit won't be disappointed. Just like a well known advert, I never leave home without DeWalt.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate tool kit..
I have been looking for an affordable but durable tool kit for a while, and this was well worth the money. The tools are made to work hard and definately help you get any job done right the first time. My first project used every single tool in the kit, and what a pleasure it is to swap tools/batteries in an instant. The round saw cut through 2x8's like butter, and the jigsaw made precision cuts for all of my trim work. The Drill is the best tool in the kit, because of the versatility in speed settings and high RPM which allowed me to drill right into concrete over and over again.
I highly recommend this kit to anyone looking for a great all-in-one package, and rest asure this kit will last for years... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Went with the Vista and glad I did
I'm a novice at GPS so didn't know where to start in shopping. I asked around but not that many people have these type of units.

I read all the reviews and did side by side comparisons as best I could. I wanted a device to go Geocaching so was looking for rugged, handheld, and easy to read. I chose the Vista model by Garmin and I have been well pleased. It was easy to learn, handy to use and I had my son using the device in a short time.

I used it on a 1200 mile trip and found the maps and information included with the unit to take care of our travel needs. We especially liked the services at exit feature for our travel along the interstates.

I was impressed with what these devices can do and how convenient they are to use. I ordered the cigarette lighter/serial attachment and it works fine. I also got the carrying case but I doubt that we'll continue to use it as it is hard to read thru the plastic window. We used the belt clip that is attached to the carrying case but usually let the case dangle when the device was in use. I bought a small pouch for carrying our cords, the device, and batteries. I would recommend this model to anyone wanting to get around and discover the fun of this way of travel.

I read the complaints about left handed positioning but didn't find that to be a problem. I also read about tree cover being a problem for blocking satellites. We would simply look for a small opening in the trees and could usually pick up 3-4 satellites.

I appreciated shopping at Amazon and the help that they could give with these reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most feature rich handheld GPS available
As far as Garmin's eTrex line goes, this is the top of the line. The Vista packs an electronic compass, an altimeter, and 24 MB of memory for maps into the same handheld package the basic eTrex comes in. Plus they've gone ahead and improved the screen and added the "ClikStik" a clickable joystick.

In terms of pure GPS functionality, the Vista adds the ability to get DGPS signals from the newly activated WAAS satelites. But obtaining those signals at present is a challenge.

I personally found the ClikStik a bit hard to use at times, and not as responsive as I wanted, but it adds a lot of ease of use to the unit (imagine trying to move around on the map without it). The screen was a big improvement over the eTrex's screen, and readibility is vastly improved. Plus not having to go the requisite 1-2 MPH before the unit figures out which way you're walking (thanks to the electronic compass) is nice, and makes figuring out where you need to go while standing still a lot easier. Also the altimeter can be setup to automatically be calibrated with GPS data. It's again in the same rugged, waterproof case as the original, so it can take a little bit of abuse. And for those of you who don't want every waypoint to look like a flag, you can differentiate your favorite locations with a lot of different icons. Tracklogs and number of waypoints that can be stored is increased over the basic eTrex as well.

There are downsides: Like the eTrex, satelite locks can be lost pretty easily under heavy cover or packed in a bag. The battery life is greatly shortened (if you turn on the compass and use the WAAS adjustments) compared to its simpler sibling. The Garmin maps (the only ones you can download to the Vista) are next to worthless in terms of accuracy. And then there's the price.

If you're in the market for an upgrade or replacement of a handheld GPS, the Vista has to be in the running.

5-0 out of 5 stars GARMIN HAS GOOD RECEPTION
I own 3 GPS receivers and I will say Garmin did an excellent job. The receiver is much more sensitive to satellite signals than my other GPSs. Just don't expect too much from this small unit with tiny screen and very slow CPU for screen refresh. It will drive you nuts to use it for street navigation. It is suitable for back trailing in the mountains. For street navigate, I strongly suggest that you hook this unit up with a laptop but make sure that GPS is set to NMEA and the software GPS setting is also correct. Conclusion, don't street navigate with this unit alone and don't buy a no brand GPS under $90 because you will not be happy with the reception.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Xl2 yet, maybe never...
What's with bonehead "and now, only as Canon can do it better they are coming out with Canon XL2 in Feb 2004"...? people are just making stuff up about the fictional XL2. The XL1 and XL1s are both competent cameras, and will serve the purposes of most videographers wanting to shoot using the Mini DV format. One thing I do appreciate with the XL1 is that features like iris adjustment and white balance are utilized with dedicated buttons on the camera body. Some of the newer, supposedly "superior" Mini DV cameras are now putting these adjustments in the menu section, making it a pain to adjust quickly when shooting.

As for the XL2, everyone thought that Canon would announce it at the NAB show in April 2004, but nothing was forthcoming. Meanwhile cameras that came out in response to the XL1s from companies like Sony and Panasonic have already been updated and released in their second version.

Bottom line, there just may not be a XL2 in the works. It certainly seems that Canon is content to continue to sell the XL1s as its top of the line camcorder. Rather than an "upgrade" to the XL1s, Canon may be working on a completely different camera, and who knows when it may be released for sale to the public. I am sure if there was a really cool "XL2" within 6 months of release, someone would have heard something about it by now. Interesting is that the "XL" designation comes from the old Super 8mm cameras, with Canon 1014 "XLs" being the last Super 8mm they made before abandoning the format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best DV Camcorder If You Are Serious
The picture quality of the XL1s is outstanding and it is known to be the industry's leading pro-sumer camcorder. It is also an extremely versatile camera, allowing you to change lenses, vary your audio options (such as connecting to professional audio sound systems), and film in both frame and wide-screen formats. The only drawbacks are that it is quite a leap in complexity and it doesn't have a pop-out viewfinder, which means you're stuck looking throught the eye-piece or have to buy an attachable view-finder.

It isn't for your average videographer who wants to just take video of family and vacations. It is actually being used to film documentaries and for professional services such as filming events such as weddings (which is what I use it for).

Due to its size, weight, complexity, and cost (especially when you add the optional accessories such as filters, additional lenses and microphones, etc.), you had better be very serious about videography before you invest in the XL1s. If you are, you will be thrilled with this camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth is...
What's reviewer: "a customer" & "Tyrone Brumwell"...thinking! There is a Canon XL2 comming out next month in August. I contacted Canon USA and verified it. You can do the same at 1-800-OkCanon. SAVE your money for this new beauty ($4,000) it will be worth it! Read the specs at canon's website. The Xl1 and XL1s, don't come close!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I bought this for my wife. This is most certainly a great product. I do agree however, that the keys are not as weighted as they should be. My wife mentioned that they feel as though they spring back unlike a standard piano.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Instrument!!
A terrific instrument, pound for pound, than any out there for sale. With 88 keys, educational software, many voices, etc. there's nothing better for the money plus you get Yamaha quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value
I was looking for something I could put in my little apartment and be able to move if and when I had to, and I could afford. My girlfriend/roommate was a music major, and thus very picky about the way an instrument feels and sounds. We had our musical choices narrowed down to this keyboard and a digital piano. After playing this instrument in the store, we decided that for the money, you just can't beat it.
This unit runs about half the price of a digital keyboard, and while I agree that the weighting of the keys is not very significant (hence 4 stars out of 5), the sound I think is outstanding. Not only the grand piano sound, but also a good percentage of the voices (out of 614, of course a few of them are subpar).
On top of all this, the lesson feature is wonderful. I don't know how to play piano or read music or anything, but the lesson feature teaches you how to play any of the 100 songs pre-programmed into the keyboard. I've only had it about 3 days, and I'm learning a lot faster than I would have thought.
So if you're looking for an extremely versatile instrument that won't break your bank, this is definitely for you. If you want something that plays just like a piano, then buy a piano. But I can't recommend this product enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Film Series! Poor DVD Extra Features.
Dirty Harry is without a doubt one the most famous characters ever to be portrayed by Clint Eastwood. It was almost like seeing the man with no name being given a badge in modern times. The first film is arguably the best, for a great deal of reasons. First you have a great villain: Scorpio..completely off his rocker, who's vile and deadly..somebody you want Harry to show no mercy to. Plus this is the only film that ever gives any real insight to who Harry is and why he's become this sort of rogue cop with a vengeance. One of my favorite scenes is when he's talking to his dead partner's wife as he reveals a bit of himself to her. It's a poignant moment we never really ever see again in the Harry character. But the movie succeeds in keeping our eyes glued to the picture because we want Harry to track down Scorpio and save the girl he's kidnapped just as much as Harry does! The final scenerio on a bus is very good. A modern day classic at its best!

The other Dirty Harry movies are not as clever as the first film, and by saying that I mean that they're still good movies, but the 1st film is more superior. "Magnum Force" deals with the story of cops who take the law into their own hands (including a young Robert Urich), going a step beyond what even Harry does, thinking he'll join them. "The Enforcer" give a unique twist of pairing Harry with a female partner, played well by Tyne Daly (which is why I think she later ended up on the TV series "Cagney & Lacey"). My personal favorite of the Harry films next to the original has got to be "Sudden Impact", which was also directed by Clint Eastwood. It includes his all time best Dirty Harry line and has a great finale at an amusement park. "The Dead Pool" ends the series with some great wit and action, including a unique car chase with a little remote control car. Add Jim Carrey as a doped up out of his mind rock muscician (using Guns 'N' Roses Welcome To The Jungle as his own song) and what more could you ask for?

As great as the movies are I was very disappointed in the slim pickens as far as extra features on the DVDs are concerned. "Dirty Harry" contains a new retrospective documentary, that is pretty good. But why didn't Warner Brothers opt to include the documentary that was included on the Laserdisc Box Set, entitled: "Eastwood: The Man From Malpaso"? Magnum Force & The Enforcer also contain short "Making Of" featurettes that aren't bad. All the other films only contain a trailer. Which means, perhaps some time down the road another box set will be released, filled to the teeth with extras (anybody remember the Die Hard trilogy?). But for people like me who have been waiting and waiting and waiting for all 5 Harry films to become available, as well as to be put together in a nice Box Set, the time to buy is now. I've never even seen any of the films in the Widescreen format (2.35:1), so now I finally can. So make your day or somebody's day and pick up the Dirty Harry Collection DVD Box Set! You'll be glad you did.

"Go ahead...make my day" - Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry

3-0 out of 5 stars an uneven group of action films
This box set contains all five of Clint Eastwood's films in the "Dirty Harry" series (1971-1988 ). Given the tremendous popularity of the eponymous 1971 classic, it is hardly surprising that Warner Brothers would commission a line of sequels. It is clear that "DIRTY HARRY" stands on its own as one of the best action films ever made and easily merits a five star rating. The sequels ( a Dirty Harry "franchise" ), while drawing on the original for their frame of reference, have nowhere near the same power and focus as the original.

The following sets forth brief descriptions of the four sequels ( the review for the original appears in the 30th anniversary DVD edition "DIRTY HARRY" ).

MAGNUM FORCE ( 1973 ) is interesting chiefly for the interplay between Callahan and Lt Briggs ( played by Hal Halbrook ).There is, as one would expect, a lot of action but of a routine and disconnected nature, fulfilling the bare minimum required by the genre but notably lacking the creative direction Don Siegel furnished in the original. The main plot ( part of the double meaning of the title ) involves a secret "death squad" functioning within the police department; interestingly, the storyline appears to have been developed as a counter to accusations ( made by the cultural left ) that the first film was "fascistic". Eastwood's charisma and a few good lines notwithstanding, the film runs on for far too long to little effect. TWO-STAR RATING.

THE ENFORCER ( 1976 ) is the worst of the entire DH series, containing a ridiculous plot centering on underground revolutionary criminals ( modeled on the SLA ) with the subplot focused on the bantering exchanges between Callahan and his ( female ) partner ( played by Tyne Daly ). The cheesy "jazz" score that drones on through the center of the film is extremely irritating and while Eastwood has a few good scenes, interest is not sustained. The final 10 minutes ( location shooting on Alcatraz Island ) is worth a look but all in all this movie does not repay the effort of watching it. ONE-STAR RATING.

SUDDEN IMPACT ( 1983 ) is the only Dirty Harry film directed by Eastwood and easily the best of the sequels. Several aspects set this film apart from the others:

1. The plot has some real substance, Sandra Locke giving a good performance as a successful artist who, haunted by the gang rape she and her sister suffered a decade earlier, stumbles upon one of the ( never punished ) thugs and sets out on a course of revenge against all the perpetrators.

2. The cinematography is excellent with Eastwood drawing upon his considerable directorial abilities. There is a convincing symmetry to the opening and closing titles ( beautiful overhead shots of nighttime San Francisco and an early morning overview of the Santa Cruz beachfront ). Several scenes ( Locke trapped in tormented reminiscence ) feature camera work drawing on a moodiness redolent of film-noir. There is also a nice daytime shot of Inspector Callahan looking over cliff-side crime scene, the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge stretched out in a distant background.

3. Eastwood ( having aged nicely in the 12 year interim between the original film ) brings more fire to his characterization than he had in the other sequels; seething sarcasm in his verbal confrontations with department officials and a ruthless, stone-cold application of force toward the repulsive criminals ( the villains are particularly well-portrayed ).

4. Lalo Schifrin' music score is the best since his work on the original.

Drawbacks? There are a few unnecessary action sequences which mar the otherwise unusually ( for the series ) focused storyline. FOUR-STAR RATING.

THE DEAD POOL ( 1988 ) is last film in the series and is certainly the most unorthodox of the sequels. Eastwood had obviously tired of the character and signed off on a script that allowed him to integrate two subplot themes that actually "trump" the ( superficial ) main storyline.

1. A satirical edge ( most apparent in its parody of the famous car chase in "BULLITT" ).

2. An indictment of both sensationalistic TV journalism and the narcissistic "cult" of celebrity prevalent in modern America.

The main storyline is fairly absurd and the action scenes are woodenly routine ( mob shootouts and diner robberies ) but Eastwood still looks and talks the part of Harry Callahan, with some good verbal jousts with an attractive television reporter and an arrogant schlock movie director ( played by Liam Neeson ). A young Jim Carrey plays the part of a drug addicted rock star.

As one would expect, the movie makes extensive use of location shooting in ever-photogenic San Francisco but nothing other than mere competency is achieved. All in all, it is clear that the well had run dry and Eastwood ( sensibly enough ) had some tongue-in-cheek fun with this, the last shot Harry Callahan fired. TWO-STAR RATING.

In conclusion: this box set is an obligatory purchase for Dirty Harry fans as well as for diehard Clint Eastwood "completists". For less dedicated viewers, the original "Dirty Harry" is very highly recommended with "Sudden Impact" as an enjoyably distant second choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every one a gem
I understand many people dislike sequels and that most people put too high of expectations on sequels but I am quite sick of all of the 'wannabe' critics that say, Oh, the first was the best, the rest sucked...that is "the thing to say" I guess if you THINK youre a film fan and follow blindly behind the other sheep bleating just because the other sheep are. Now, everyone has the right to like or dislike a film but if you liked the first film you generally like the sequels. Each film to me is a continuation. If you don't like em, fine, move on. However I find EVERY film presented here a gem. Each film presented here did fairly well at the box office. The point is, these were supposed to be like the bond films but Eastwood decided enough was enough. Some say, awwww, its his worst after the westerns....cmon, hes not gonna do westerns forever!!! ridiculous! The films here are gritty and VERY 70s/80s so newcomers won't find much to relate to here but anyone who is a 70s or 80s child will enjoy these films. Its NOT NYPD Blue, Nor is it Lethal Weapon or any other cop drama. These are films that were VERY revolutionary back in their day and made Eastwood a star, it wasnt his "Man with no name" trilogy that did it, even though they were amazing and got the ball rolling for him. It was these films right here that gave him his trademark saying "go ahead, make my day!". If your a fan of Harry you must own this set, otherwise move off to the pasture and bleat and chew grass like all of the other sheep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You either love it or hate it--and I love it!
The value of "Pulp Fiction" is partly reflected in the extreme range of its "man on the street" reviews. It's either the very worst or the very best, with no "ho-hums" in between.

I saw "True Romance" first (with no particular fore-knowledge of Quentin Tanantino) and hated it--thought it was one of the most pointless, over-acted, cloying, contrived, senselessly sensationalistic films I'd seen in a long time (Christopher Walken's cameo excepted). Needless to say, I was NOT particularly disposed to Tarantino after that experience. But then a close friend featured Pulp Fiction at the annual "Football, Flank Steak, and Film Fest Extravaganza" he hosts every year on Super Bowl Sunday--and voilá!

In looking back at "Pulp Fiction," I see, at the bottom line, a bunch of low-lifes, criminals, cheats, and dumb-asses. Quite frankly, I don't like the idea that this movie might serve to glorify or elevate these kinds of people. But the unaffected earnestness, quirky relationships, blue-collar grit, humorous self-importance, down-to-earth dialogue, heart-stopping vignettes, delightful incongruities, and unconventional sense of honor and justice of "Pulp Fiction" easily overrode my objections.

It's pontless to over-analyze this movie, just as it's futile to try to give concrete reasons for the beauty or appeal of anything unconventional. I want to be contacted emotionally, somehow--and with me, "Pulp Fiction" simply clicked.

I became such a convert that, the day after seeing the movie, I ordered UCSC Fighting Banana Slugs t-shirts for my friend and myself. I wear mine with pride, relishing the occasional "Are you from Santa Cruz or did you love 'Pulp Fiction'?" reaction I get on the street.

Yes, it's one of those movies that you love or you hate. So count me in with those who genuinely and unabashedly love this film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pulp fans demand a better DVD, PUNCHY!
This is of course the best film ever made. I own the DVD, but can't understand the shortage of extras. The laserdisc format has plenty of extras. For example it has the tralior and T.V. spots. Behind the scenes, the Making of Pulp, the Charlie Rose interview with QT, and four deleted scenes hosted by QT. Why couldn't we get those with the DVD format. Hopefully in the near future, a re-release of the DVD will include these goodies and maybe perhaps a Tarantino-Bender commentary track and a director's cut of the complete film. The current DVD provides average picture and sound. It is the best movie ever made and gets better each time you watch it. You will also find out new things every time you view it. For instance, the gun on Butch's counter didn't belong to Vincent, it belonged to Wallace. Remember, Jules had already quit. Butch doesn't have any intention in throwing the fight until Vincent picks a fight with him. It's true, go back and watch how Butch acts while talking with Wallace and then how mad he gets when Vincent starts with him. Plus Fabeine is pregnant in the movie, listen very closely to what she says. The movie also has a comic side to it. I think it's funny how Vincent basically caused everything in the movie. Just think, Vincent caused Mia's overdose by purchasing heroine from Lance, in the first chapter. In the second chapter, "The Gold Watch," Vincent picks a fight with Butch. Then Butch throws the boxing match. Then in "The Bonnie Situation," Vincent tells Jules, "Do you feel like having breakfast?" Then they go to the diner, and you know what happens. Vincent is the films main character, and without him there wouldn't have been a movie because he started all the problems. Ask yourself these questions while viewing this. Why DON'T Vincent and Jules die in the apartment? Why DO Vincent and Marvin die after "Devine Intervention?" Why does Jules let Ringo LIVE? Why does Butch go back to SAVE Wallace's life? What is in the BRIEFCASE? Tarantino wasn't lazy when writing and directing this film. The more you watch it, the more likely you'll have the answers to these questions and more. You need to watch it more than two times to understand it. If you didn't like it the first time, give it another try. This movie is NOT bad, overrated, boring or too long like some people say. The actors are great and perfect for thier roles. Any real movie fan will agree with me. People ask me what the movie is about and its difficult to say. It's about a lot of things like honor, pride, luck, faith and redemption. This is my favorite and the greatest movie ever made!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quentin Tarantino's best before Kill Bill

5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Classic
This is the classic punk science fiction film of the eighties for which punk auteur Alex Cox will be remembered. Fantastic performances from Emilio Estevez & Harry Dean Stanton, a driving punk soundtrack, wild dialogue and some incredible characters make this a unique and memorable film. I sought out Cox's other works after becoming a fan of this film, and nothing else he's done has come close. It's funny, it's clever and it's original. It's the story of a young punks (Estevez) initiation into the world of car repossession, by the world weary and cynical repo man (Stanton), taking in armed robbery, rival repo men, UFO's and government conspiracy along the way. And somewhere out there is a car with something weird in the boot, and everyone's looking to collect the bounty on it. I'm looking forward to seeing what extras are on the limited collectors version of the DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE classic cult film
Finally! It's out on DVD - the cult film to end all cult films. Certainly the greatest film ever to star Emilio Estevez. It's a real tour de force, the story being a complex tale - part alien conspiracy (x-files eat your heart out), part road movie, part pure science fiction, and part screwball comedy. Basically a car containing an alien entity has been stolen, and all and sundry are after it, including some repo men, who are after the car as there's a $25000 bounty on it. Harry Dean Stanton is his usual brilliant self, but in truth, the whole supporting cast are brilliant. Special mention must go to director Alex Cox - he has never been able to match this modern masterpiece, and never will. He can be thanked for the little touches - the punk, dying in the store, blaming society, the store itself containing all manner of items marked food, drink etc..pure genius. Buy this film - it is the greatest B film of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the f*ck do I know?
One thing I do know is this film is a modern day masterpiece.Unlike anything made before it.A true work of art and absolutely essential to any great DVD collection.Better than Gone With The Wind.It will make you wanna go to L.A. but stay home and watch Repo Man instead.I really wish they'd release the made for TV version of it as well.Along with the high art of Richard Elfman's brilliant Forbidden Zone, Repo Man is in a class all by itself.SUPERB! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Its...every single episode! - "Can't be bad."
This is a set of 14 DVDs which contain all 45 episodes, every sketch you know and love (all 4 seasons, 1969-1974) of the ground-breaking Monty Python's Flying Circus starring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. It comes in a neat and pretty orange and pink box that's roughly 5.5 x 8.5 inches. In terms of digital format there are some minor blemishes but this show dates back to 1969! Get a grip! Its almost as if the presenters new that people would be complaining about this and wrote on the DVD cases - "...enjoy the original scratches, pops and hisses with crystal clarity." The bigger complaint you will hear or read about is the fact that somethings (mostly a word or two) have been censored from the original episodes. I admit there is nothing sillier than censoring a completely normal word and yet leaving the topless woman in, but this is a minor detail to having the entire series at the push of a button. I'm not about to hunt down all the VHS tapes just so I can have a few (and I do mean a few) words. I also don't plan on aging a decade to see if they will bring out another set. If you love this show, I don't recommend you do that either. This will be the definitive set for quite some time, if not until the next new format arrives, so why wait? Start the lunacy right now! Here are the episode titles and corresponding DVDs. Why? Because I care, silly.

5-0 out of 5 stars CHEAP COLLECTION OF FLYING CIRCUS AT COSTCO
I would definitely recommend this to true Pythonites, but I found the set for a whole lot cheaper at Costco. Only 89.99. It's the cheapest I've seen it anywhere. With 14 DVDs, that's about 6.50 per DVD. And there's no shipping or handling costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Possible Thing in This Price Range!
Don't Be Scared off by the price. If you decided to look into this item you've probably seen the Holy Grail and either Meaning of life or Life of Brian (or both). If not, go do that. Holy grail is the best thing for the un-initiated. The features are awesome. I love the Useless Tidbits and clips of the Live at the Hollywood Bowl Show (available on Monty Python Live!). Do yourself a favor and buy it. As a follow-up get And Now For Something completely different. Watch each episode from start to finish in order! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars John Cleese is Brilliant
Fawlty Towers is a crowning achievment. It is one of the funniest, most clever shows ever to air on television. Short but sweet with only 12 episodes there are to be sure some lesser episdoes with "A Touch of Class" the first episode a bit weak, and "Waldorf Salad" the least funny overall. However, "The Germans" and "Gourmet Night" alone are worth the entire box set, being two of the funniest shows ever written. "The Germans" from start to finish is superb, stuffed so full of funny material, if you don't laugh, check your pulse. Favorite lines "Yes you did. You invaded Poland!" & "I don't know why we bother. We should let you all burn!" The other episodes offer many hilarious bits of comedy, all better than most things on t.v. today. The box set with all the shows is well worth it. And the extras are great as well. I have always wondered what Andrew Sachs sounded like when not portraying Manuel. These are definitely discs to watch over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basil Fawlty is my hero!
I would like to publicly thank John Cleese and Connie Booth for creating the best British Comedy in the history of television (Absolutely Fabulous and Blackadder can't even touch this one - I was SO ANGRY Basil Fawlty did not make the list of TV Guide's most memorable characters). During 2 1/2 grueling years of working retail at a department store, coming home and watching John Cleese's nasty - hilarious hotel owner Basil Fawlty proved to be more therapeutic than any anger management course I could have taken (and, I might add, a heck of a lot more enjoyable!). My personal favorites - "The Germans" which has Basil has a heck of a time trying to explain fire drill procedures to his guests, and then, once they finally understand and have the drill, a REAL fire starts in the kitchen - Basil sustains a head injury and later insults some German guests (if you remember the Ministry of Silly Walks from Monty Python, this episode'll be especially funny to you); "Communications Problems", a laugh-till-you-cry episode with Basil having to contend with an impossible old woman who can't hear, but refuses to use her hearing aid for fear she'll wear out the battery (he plays a cruel joke on her that'll have you rolling); "The Builders", where Basil tries to use cheap builders instead of professionals to renovate the hotel - they end up botching the job and Sybil ends up taking matters into her own hands (does she EVER - Prunella Scales was HILARIOUS in this one); and finally, "Hotel Inspectors", the first episode, where Basil gets word of hotel critics in town and must be polite to all the guests out of fear of running into one of them (one guest in particular is so unbearably annoying you'll delight in the ending, where Basil gives him a right good send-off). All in all, the most perfect comedy series in the history of TV (WHY ONLY 12 EPISODES? ) - if you have to deal with impossible people on the job (and face it, most of us do) it's a MUST HAVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excrutiatingly Funny
You are invited to the vist the worst-run hotel in England to enjoy a mixture of slapstick and word-wit. Each episode is based around the mental unravelling of the co-owner, Basil Fawlty, as his ill-conceived schemes spiral into the ground with the aid of his long suffering hapless helper Manuel. ...
