5-0 out of 5 stars EUREKA 161D6 STICK BROOM VACUUM
I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY THIS HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. I'VE BOUGHT THEM AND USED THEM FOR 10 YEARS OR SO, AND THEY ARE FAR BETTER FOR VACUUMING ON WOOD AND TILE FLOORS THAN WHAT THEY'VE BEEN REPLACED WITH. THE LARGER ONES WITH THE BRUSH ROLLER-- I'VE TRIED 2 OF THEM-- SEEM TO BLOW THE DIRT AROUND AND NOT PICK IT UP NEAR AS WELL AS THE LITTLE SUPERBROOM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look no further!!!
We have 3000 sq. ft. of tile floor, 2 children under age 3, and 3 dogs, 2 of which are Chows (a.k.a. furballs). This vac NEVER lets me down, even if it is some sticky residue from some "recipe" my children made that I somehow missed for a couple of days.It gets up not only dog hair but HUGE furballs, never clogs, and is a breeze to empty.Mine finally wore out after using it an average of 5-8 times a week for the last 5 years.Amazon doesn't have it...take the time to find it, you'll be happy with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eureka 161D6 Stick Broom Vacuum
I love this vacuum. It's great on all my rugless floors, even my enclosed deck.It has great suction. It sucks up sand, kitty litter and hard to sweep up dust.I once vacuumed sugar from the floor. The mouth and bag got sticky, I just washed it off with a tooth brush and soap and it's good as new.I always keep the strain off the motor by cleaning the filter bag after every use with a toothbrush.Only bad thing about mine is the handle broke when it got shut in a door when storing.I've had it for 2 years. It's a great gift to give.No more dust mops for me. ... Editorial Review

Virtually everyone enjoys a crisply ironed dress shirt, clean sheets on a well-made bed, and a savory home-cooked meal. Yet housekeeping today stands as a somewhat neglected, if not maligned, job. But as author Cheryl Mendelson points out in Home Comforts, keeping house well can be a rewarding position--it allows you to provide for the physical and emotional comfort of loved ones. It's also not an easy job--there's much to be learned about properly managing a home, and Mendelson has set out to provide a guide to doing just that.

Mendelson, a homemaker, lawyer, and mother, learned about housekeeping from an early age from her grandmothers, one Appalachian, the other Italian. The two grandmothers taught her that although different ways of keeping house can be appropriate, there are generally smarter, faster, and more creative ways of housekeeping that make it less of a chore and more of an art. In a practical, authoritative tone, Mendelson discusses the ins and outs of homemaking, such as washing dishes, recommended cleaning methods for various surfaces, housekeeping for those with pets or allergies, and emergency preparedness and safety procedures.

Mendelson's well-researched book includes meticulous sections on food (for example, which foods belong in the fridge versus the pantry, food storage times, picking the freshest fruits and vegetables, and keeping your kitchen and food sanitary) as well as laundry (caring for various fabrics, how to read--and read between the lines of--clothing care labels, and removing stains). Mendelson covers a lot of ground, and as she herself points out, readers shouldn't feel required to do everything mentioned in the book--simply pick the activities that seem appropriate for your particular home. This is a comprehensive reference book that should serve homemakers well and induce a greater appreciation for the effort and specialized knowledge that go into keeping house. --Kris Law ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver for the clueless housekeeper
This book changed me from a clueless, frustrated homemaker into a capable home manager.I cannot recommend it enough. It is good for every person who is tired of trying to keep house and not understanding why they fall short. It explains things that our grandmothers were taught and we were not. Many women raised in the 70s and 80s like me were just not taught how to be homemakers. Yet, many of us now find ourselves with homes to keep and no idea how. The author of this book understands and fills in the many gaps in our homekeeping knowledge. It just isn't cool to talk about why the laundry comes out grey or why we can't seem to get dinner on the table. But it is important to the well-being of our families to find the answers to questions like these and more. This book explains everything I wanted to know but was not sure who to ask.It is like advice from a wise grandmother.I would never part with my copy but I will be sure to get one for my daughter when she starts out on her own.I wish someone had done the same for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
It sounds trite, but this book has changed my life. Growing up I was lucky enough to have a mother who kept a very clean and comfortable house, unfortunately I never paid any attention to how she did it and I considered all housework a drudgery. Fast forward to the present day - here I am a woman in my late thirties with two young children and who hadn't a clue how to keep house. It seemed I was constantly just trying to "keep up" and whenever we have company I was frantically running around trying to get the house in order. It wasn't until I received this book that I realized that not only is keeping a clean and organized house NOT a drudgery, but there is a methodology to it. I didn't know you scheduled a cleaning day every week, or a marketing day, or anything like it. This is probably obvious to many people, but I used to only do the laundry when it was piled so high it wouldn't fit in the hamper or we ran out of clean clothes! Thisbook has changed my family's life for the better. Not only do we get to enjoy living in a clean and comfortable house every day (no rushing around when company is coming over!), but I find I have more free time to do other things. Yes, my house still gets messy. My four year old spreads his toys all over the living room carpet. I don't really consider that mess though, I mean that's just living. I also know that underneath those toys he gets to play on a clean carpet.

This book has taught me how to wash everything from clothes, dishes, to floors. It's really an invaluable reference, plus it's just plain inspiring. It goes over every detail about how to keep a home, not just cleaning, but how to really create a place where you feel rejuvenated. I remember when this book first came out it was considered antifemminist, the fact is it's just the opposite. This is a feminist book. In a gender neutal manner it shows how to keep house. I consider myself a feminist and I'm glad to see someone finally showing the value of something that has been considered "women's work" all these years. She explains why this kind of work is so important for our physical and mental health.

My only real criticisms of the book are similiar to other reviewers. She gives parenting advice occasionally which has no place in this book. (She's against the family bed, which as an attachment style parent myself, I disagree with her.) Also some of the advice goes a little too far. The thing that sticks out in my mind is her notion that you should never use the kitchen sink for anything but food preperation. That means no washing your hands in the kitchen sink. This is kind of silly I think. Maybe for people living on a farm who's hands might be soiled with manure I could see this, but for the average person today it's not something I would follow. My criticisms are minor though. I use this book as a reference constantly and I think even a person seasoned in the art of keeping house would find it useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars -- but with reservations
Although I find this book thoroughly worth the purchase price, I was surprised to find it less of an enjoyable read than I had expected. It is textbook-like in its physical size, and in the sheer amount of material covered, and therefore -- like a good textbook -- would benefit from a neat summary at the end of each chapter, a few more easy-to-reference charts, an attempt to separate out the "must know's" from the "might be interested to know's." That, or a good working over by a strict editor (am I correct that there was none?). The reader has to slog through so much (albeit pleasant) chat and anecdote that it's a fairly tedious read. One might argue that it's a reference work and not a novel, and therefore not intended for a read, however there's truly valuable detail buried in all the verbiage.

I'd greatly welcome the "Cliff Notes" on this book, frankly.

Past that, my compliments to the author for having attempted to right a wrong in bringing housework back to the level of a worthwhile occupation requiring significant knowledge, skill, and loving attention to detail. And although I can't help but wonder at her fixation with microbes, I admit I'd rather spend time in a home which errs on the side of over-fastidiousness than under.

I do pity those lost souls who were not raised with the advantage of a mother or grandmother for whom these many finer points were a way of life. Ms. Mendelson has made me aware of what a blessing it is to have a sixth sense about the myriad details of the various jobs she covers, thanks simply to a childhood spent doing those jobs side by side with women in my family who did them "properly." Again, however, especially for the uninitiated, it would be valuable to have the book organized in such a way as to faciliate several depths of absorption of the material. Easier said than done, no doubt -- but I fear the content might be overwhelming to those who would benefit from it the most.

(A note: the layout, font, and illustrations are handsome and well-chosen and greatly enhance this book.)

    Editorial Review

Super-sharp blades and ergonomic handles make this set of knives a top-notch starter set. Forged in Solingen, Germany, of a combination of ice-hardened carbon and stainless steel for edge retention, rust-resistance, and durability, this trio will perform the bulk of knife-work in your kitchen.

When it is finally time to sharpen the blades, worry not, for they lend themselves well to both a sharpening stone and steel. Once you've achieved the edge you want, a few quick sweeps along a steel each time you use one of the knives should keep the edge in fine condition. The ergonomic polypropylene handles lie comfortably in your hand, facilitating strain-free use; the metal bolsters act as finger-guards; and the blade, bolster, and tang of each knife are fused into a seamless piece for easy handling and balance. The absence of rivets and recesses in the synthetic handles allows for dishwasher use. Finally! Still, the best way to care for this knife is to hand wash it with a mild soap, rinse it well, and then immediately wipe it dry. --Marcela Broussard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the independent homeschooler
I am not really into having a set curricullum and the entire year laid out for me and this book was a great help in guiding me through my teachings and making sure my kids are getting what they need.I like to take the book at the beginning of the year and hand write a list by each subject of what is expected for the year. Then, as the kids master different things, I highlight them and that way I know what is left for them to learn by the end of the year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Design your own unique curriculum for your unique child!
I LOVE this book! There is no way I could use a pre-packaged curriculum with my daughter; her math skills are so far ahead of her reading, and I wouldn't want her to be either bored or frustrated.
Each chapter lists what your child needs to have a firm grasp of in each subject in each grade level.Math, Reading, Writing, Art, Social Studies, Science, Foreign Language, Music and even Sex Ed are all included.
I refer to this book constantly to make sure we're on track with the subjects that she finds a little bit challenging.I go through the book and make lists of what my objectives are every few months to keep us on track and challenged. And designing your own curriculum gives your family a little more "wiggle room" to spend extra time on the subjects that really interest your child.
It's just a fantastic way to make sure your homeschooled child is learning appropriate subject matter at the proper time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Encouraging and Thorough- You Won't Be Overwhelmed!
As a new parent who is very seriously considering homeschooling in the future I found this book to be exactly what I was looking for to ease my misgivings and concerns about the possibility of offering my child(ren) an incomplete education and/or being completely overwhelmed by the enormity of teaching them "everything" they need to know.Drawing from the curriculum model generally used in both public and some private schools, Rupp clearly outlines the specific concepts children should know or be aquainted with according to grade and subject from preschool through high school. The objectives are stated very clearly and, best of all, she provides an immense amount of suggestions for numerous books, references, catalogs, and websites to help teach the concepts, offering parents much structure and support as well as saving them from having to do all the footwork themselves. The value of having such a well organized reference is that the information it offers can easily be adapted to pretty much any homeschooling style without sacrificing its own individuality. The curriculum can also be tailored to each child's personal tastes and abilities as nothing about it is written in stone.I feel that it provides a sound safeguard to ensure basic knowledge in preparation for college. Not only is it a great starting point and perhaps an essential resource for homeschooling parents, but I recommend it for school teachers as well.I know that I would have relished the direction, structure, and resources this book offers while teaching in the public schools! ... Editorial Review

Father Tim, a cherished small-town rector, is the steadfast soldier in this beloved slice of life story set in an American village where the grass is still green, the pickets are still white, and the air still smells sweet. The rector's forthright secretary, Emma Garret, worries about her employer, as she sees past his Christian cheerfulness into his aching loneliness. Slowly but surely, the empty places in Father Tim's heart do get filled. First with a gangly stray dog, later with a seemingly stray boy, and finally with the realization that he is stumbling into love with his independent and Christian-wise next-door neighbor. Much more than a gentle love story, this is a homespun tale about a town of endearing characters-- including a mysterious jewel thief--who are as quirky and popular as those of Mayberry, R.F.D. --Gail Hudson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good reading!
When I first started reading this book, I kept thinking, "Boring, I can't get into this."But I kept reading and realized after awhile I was hooked on the characters.I ended up loving these books.I was surprised to find out Ms. Karon lives in Blowing Rock, NC (I live right next door in Boone) and that this town was supposedly based on Blowing Rock. Blowing Rock is a ski resort. The main street of Blowing Rock is about 3 blocks long, and it's usually so overun with tourists that you can barely walk down the sidewalk. It is a charming, quaint looking little village town, though, with a grill, shops, library and pretty much everything within walking distance. Ms. Karon has obviously eliminated the tourists from her Mitford town. Her description of the church actually makes me think of a little church in Blowing Rock down past the shops on the main street as you're heading off into the mountains.I've watched the people come out of that church on Sundays, and they all look like they've probably been there for about a hundred years.I thought these books were very nice--they give you a good, cozy feeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Travel through Mitford to Bliss
I'm a big Mitford fan. Have been from the beginning. It's so nice to find a retreat from a tough world. Having read every Mitford book, I was delighted to find another book that travels the same course. (I needed a new book to read). If you love Mitford, you'll love Bliss, Mississippi in the new novel The Town That Came A-Courtin'. I have read an advance reading copy and strongly recommend it to all who love Mitford. We cannot have too many books with Christian values, quirky characters and pure fun and joy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A small town story!
"At Home in Mitford" by Jan Karon is the first of her Mitford series that deals with Father Tim, a village rector, who seems to know everything that is going on in Mitford. Father Tim's life was changed when a stray dog took an immense liking to him as well as a young boy named Dooley that moved in with him. Not to mention, there was also the attractive and funny neighbor by the name of Cynthia that just moved in next to his house. On top of all these things, there are problems, issues, and stories of the Mitford folks that Father Tim had to deal with.

"At Home in Mitford" is a warm, funny and sweet book that deals with small town personalities and living. Through the eyes of Father Tim, we get to see interesting as well as eccentric characters in Mitford that we can't help but relate to. At the beginning of the book, I was overwhelmed by all those characters and couldn't keep track of who is who but after a while, I was able to. Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely and would recommend it for readers seeking a cozy and intimate read. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named People's "Sexiest Man Alive."(This reviewer, a former People writer, finds this plot twist plausible.) Meanwhile, Steele teams up with Buck Williams, a buck-the-system newshound, to form the Tribulation Force, an underground of left-behind penitents battling the Antichrist.

Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind seriesis the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tips on writing a review
The first thing I would like to mention is that I just finished this book after hearing about it for years... and I loved it.I can't wait to go out and pick up number two and so on for the rest of the series.Second thing I would like to mention is: when writing a review on a book, common sense tells me that one should read the book first.People like John Milton (The Penta Corporation), and Robert Sherman (Gaithersburg MD) came on here and wrote disparaging reviews, when it is very apparent with one and self-admitted with the other that they didn't even read it!These people seem to consider themselves a higher caliber human being than certain other people. They, and others, say that people who adopt a form of organized religion (whatever religion that may be) judge everyone else without knowing them.It seems that you yourselves are guilty of the same travesty.

    Editorial Review

Former heavyweight boxing champ George Foreman loves his meat but not the fat, so he devised a series of fat-reducing electric indoor grilling machines. This family-size grill provides more than fifty square inches of cooking surface for burgers, steaks, chicken breasts, fish fillets, or veggies. Sloping channels allow grease to run off into the drip tray during cooking, keeping meats lean. Nonstick, easy-to-clean plates on the heavy lid and base don’t require greasing and sear meats to seal in juices. Both sides of the food are cooked at once, so no flipping is required and cooking time is cut in half. A floating hinge allows the lid to fit evenly over thick foods, and the top of the lid flips up to expose a metal bun warming surface. The drip tray and a plastic spatula are included. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The key is in the warm buns...
There are too many great things to say about this little device: It's affordable to anybody, even if you are a student stuck living at school. It's compact, you can store it anywhere--a closet, your car, your office, the kitchen cabinet. It's powerful--I have plugged it in and in just minutes began working on an entire three course meal for six people with only this unit to work with. It's easy to clean--this is one of the few products out there that is every bit as easy to clean as the commercials show it to be on TV. It's is economical, using very little electricity to do a just that would waste electricity in a conventional oven or even an older model microwave oven. It's versatile--I have cooked everything from thin pieces of tempeh strips to thick steaks and it cooks both to perfection. You never would have been able to convince me to buy anything on TV before (and most certainly not from a former boxing champion...) but since a friend both this grill for me I have thanked them time and again (and in turn bought the same gift for many a friend of my own).

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the counter space
I was interested by this product, with all the ads how could a person not be aware of it, but I wasn't sure it would realy be worth the cost and more imporatantly the space to use and store it.Our family was given one for as a gift and now I wish I had gotten one sooner!

Cooking time is fast, the fat really does drain off, the food tastes great and clean up is easy.My non-cooking daughter will even use this product (and doesn't burn down the house either!)

My only complaints with the product are that there is no on/off switch or temperature control.Once it is plugged in it's on and stays on until it's unplugged.

I will be buying a second smaller grill to send off to college with the cooking-challenged daughter.

This straight-sided 2-1/2-quart pan can be used for sauces and, covered with its flat lid, for stews and casseroles. Shallow (3 inches) in relation to its capacity and diameter (8-3/8 inches), this pan, unlike conventionally proportioned saucepans, exposes lots of surface and is therefore ideal for reducing sauces or even stocks and broths. Though it's not nonstick, like some Calphalon cookware, the matte-finish pan is anodized for stick-resistance as well as hardness. Metal utensils won't harm the surface. The contoured, textured handle is cast stainless steel and resists heating on the stovetop; it's also triple-riveted for durability and balance. Made of heavy-gauge aluminum, the pan cooks without hot spots or warping and carries a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

I have used this pan for around 3 months, so far I satisfy with my purchase through Amazon. it do have a distinguish difference between other cheap saucepan, but sometimes I found that it's rather sticky.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE one!!
I love it! The only thing Ive had a problem with (and I even had this happen with my wolfgang puck cookware) is heating oil to fry the kids some french fries. If you dont let it heat just like the directions say then the frozen food will stick pretty bad! But thats minor and with how fast these little babies heat its not even a problem. Im giving away the puckware. Ive got the whole calphalon H.A. line. I love it!! Calphalon cookware does it all.... What everyone says about not being dishwasher safe... Even if it was I wouldnt put mine in the dishwasher.. I wont even use metal on them. To me they are worth the extra care they require.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast cooking
The wide, shallow form factor means a high ratio of surface area to volume exposed to heat. These aluminum pans also take high heat well, quickly spreading the heat uniformly around the pan, reducing any "hot spots" that may form. This all translates to a pan that can cook well with high heat, getting you to a boil faster and shortening the time it takes to reduce sauces. Foods don't stick very much, though it takes some scrubbing to remove the light brown film that forms over time from the higher temp cooking. ... Read more

You don't have to lug around a device the size of a washingmachine just to harness the cleaning power of steam. This environmentalmultisteamer from Eureka is a self-contained, tidy little unit thatcombines hygienic and degreasing power with a wide range ofaccessories. Just fill the 2-cup boiler with tap water and you're readyto blast the grime off of floors, tile, sealed grout, upholstery, shower doors, greasy stoves, and windows. Great for the whole house, the machine kills E. coli, salmonella, and dust mites--all without theuse of detergents that can harm the environment and irritate thesenses. You can also put it to use steaming wrinkles out of clothing, cleaning bedding, and sanitizing pet beds.

With a sturdy, maneuverable base, the cleaner is easy to tote around, though it took us a couple of tries to get the knack of attaching theaccessories. There are also a lot of smart details, like the sealedpower switch, safety filler cap, and steam tank and power-indicatorlights. For a full range of cleaning options, the kit includes twoextension wands, a floor brush, a straight nozzle, an angled nozzle, aplastic brush, a brass brush, a fabric brush and cover cloth, and awindow squeegee. 3-0 out of 5 stars Great for some uses
I am a mother of four children and needless to say, I appreaciate any cleaning help I can get. For some things the steamer cleans better than traditional methods. For instance, it is great around sink handles, basins, grout, etc. It does an excellent job of cleaning counters quickly. I don't feel it does a very good job of cleaning the floor, but then I clean mine on my hands and knees. I did not find that it steamed wrinkles out of clothing very well. Nor did it do diddly to clean my upholstery.

Now that I am moving into a new home, I will probably not use it as it uses so much pressure I feel it will ruin protective sealants on the grout and so forth.

I have no complaints with lack of steam. I find the water lasts long enough to clean the kitchen and all four bathrooms without running out. The water heats up in about 15 minutes and I have never run out of pressure while using it.

One gripe, that seems trivial, but gets annoying after a while is the cord. Why couldn't Eureka provide some sort of cord storage for the item?

Overall, it does a great job of cleaning some items, but I probably wouldn't spend the money on it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier
Just used my Enviro Steamer for the first time and couldn't be more pleased. It was nice to finally find a product that lives up to the manufactor's claims. Easy to use and had enough steam to complete the job and still some left over. I tried the Shark steam cleaner but got tired of having to refill it every six or seven minutes. With the Enviro I only have to refill about every twenty-five sometimes longer. The only negitive I found was that it is somewhat awkard to drain the tank. A drain valve on the bottom of the tank would make it much easier but other than that I highly recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cleaning and Sanitizer Device Ever!!
I am a housewife and mom of four, and if I can get help out with the daily grind of cleaning and other chores it is a blessing.. This machine does just that for me! I just got through cleaning the refridgerator handles that are white, in which I have tried everything I could think of to get them white! I had tried Clorox and a scrubber, and that didn't even get everything off.. This time I squirted a little Clorox clean up, and then put the little scrub brush on the end of the steamer, and boy did it come clean this time! And now I know it is sanitary as well. I have used the steam mop, and it works well on the floors and IT IS better than just a regular mop for the reviewer that said it wasn't- a regular mop doesn't even compare because believe me, I have used many different mops in my 36 years! It lifts grime up,etc., that a mop would never get because it is straight hot steam going directly to the floor- when hot water hits the air on a rag or whatever, it immediately starts to cool off, thus becomes useless and germs galore- gets the floors sooo clean, I mean like new with no film or streaks.. This is straight hot steam blown to where you want it- and for those who say it blows water out, I know that when it condensates after not using it for a while, you are supposed to just blow the excess water off into a cup or something, and then it will begin to blow steam again.. It says it repeatedly in the directions..You can have continuous steam or not- it comes with so many different attatchments for all kinds of jobs, and it is just all around a handy tool to have for indoors and out, I think..Anyway, if you need a do it all type of steam machine, this is the one to buy. ... Editorial Review

Having exhausted the seasons and then dallying with Vince Guaraldi's music on Linus & Lucy, pianist George Winston returns to a favorite field of exploration, American landscapes. He started out with Forest in 1994 and now returns with Plains, his first new album in three years. Inspired largely by the open spaces of Montana where he grew up, Plains nevertheless mixes in traditional Irish and Hawaiian traditional, as well as standards from Sammy Cahn and Chet Atkins. Always an astute listener, Winston also finds contemporary gems from Angelo Badalamenti and Sarah McLachlan. Winston has two styles. One is the open, flowing liquid drops of sound heard on his original compositions that have made him a favorite since his Windham Hill debut, Autumn; the other is a rootsy Americana. Winston is competent and sincere, but undistinguished in the latter terrain, playing Cahn's "Teach Me Tonight" like any number of long-forgotten cocktail lounge pianists. But on originals like "Rainsong," "Cloudburst," and "Plains," Winston's piano rings out like an echo from the big sky. A special limited edition of the disc includes two songs on acoustic guitar. --John Diliberto ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music doesn't have to be challenging to be excellent.
I, and those that first discovered George Winston, some years ago, were mocked because Winston is so easy to listen to. I doubted my taste, at the time, and agreed with what a lot of people were saying, that if he's that polular, he can't be any good. In the last year or so, I've been listening more carefully to his work, and find that the large majority of it is just excellent. Once in a while a piece does lapse into loungeiness, but the great majority of his work shows a great deal of thought and attention, and will reward your close attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still F.I.N.E. fine
Any George Winston is good stuff. Some releases tho, are better than others. While "Plains" is very good, it doesn't effect me like 1982's "December" or 1994's "Forest". As for the individual songs... there is no "Carol Of The Bells", "Thanksgiving" (both from "December"), "Tramarack Pines" or "Cloudy This Morning" (both from "Forest") here. There are however some classic Winston-esque tracks here. Check out "Rainsong", "Cloudburst", "Before Barbed Wire". While Winston is able to pick and choose his 'cover' tunes, I feel his choices on "Plains" could have been better. Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" just doesn't work for me here. Winston plays the Cahn & Atkins tunes well, but his own new age stuff is easily the best. Track 9 ("Merry Go Round") should have been deleted. The majority of this album flows - and depending on where you are... it will give you the opportunity to experience some of those deep thoughts.

    Editorial Review

What could possibly be cooler than hipping kids to some of the best pop music ever made? Music for Little People makes this project simple by producing a batch of the Beatles' sunniest songs performed by a prime adult band and your children's peers and slightly reworked in kid-friendly keys. The result is largely devoid of over-the-top cutesy-poo histrionics--these kids can really sing and the harmonies are quite commendable. Young listeners will be thrilled to sing along on the bouncy chorus of "Life Goes On," to count and do the alphabet on "All Together Now," and to distinguish the amusing sounds of a penny whistle, mandolin, and zither. Both Raffi and blues artist Eric Bibb make guest appearances, but the shining star at this party is child singer Bernie Steinberg, who takes lead on three tunes, including the touchingly performed "Mother Nature's Son" and the amazingly soulful "Birthday." --Paige La Grone ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Give your kids the real Beatles...not this!
Ya know what?Stop making these condescending kiddie records.I played the real Beatles for my kids. That's what they are supposed to hear, not this sanitized pap.

Your kids will appreciate the fact that you care enough about them to offer the real deal.

2-0 out of 5 stars All you need is a CD burner...
Presumably if you're considering buying this it's because you want your children to love the Fab Four. This disc is probably NOT the best introduction to them.

The biggest fault is the song selection. Some of them are outright questionable for young kids. (do you want your kids singing about cross-dressers? Check the lyric to "Ob-La-Di,Ob-La-Da" in the final verses..) Others just aren't that kid friendly (Which do you think a 4-7 year old will "get" more...the 'let's end the arguments' theme of "We Can Work it Out" or the granola hippie musings in "Mother Nature's Son"?) If you just want to maintain the John to Paul ratio, "Nowhere Man" would be more in keeping with a child's tendency to imagination and fantasy.

The other problem is the versions are only occasionally good. Eric Bibb's take on "Here Comes the Sun", "Ob-La-di, Ob-la-Da" (despite the lyrical objection), "All Together Now" and "Mother Nature's Son" probably sound the BEST here...although that's not saying any of them are fantastic versions. "Birthday" is NOT 'amazingly soulful' as the Amazon reviewer states...it's wretched. When I'm 64 is also exceptionally painful to hear.

BOTTOM LINE: If you MUST get a re-recorded CD of Beatles tunes for the kids, don't get this one. If you're merely looking for age-appropriate songs that they'd like, I'd suggest THIS lineup of tunes burned onto CD-R from the Beatles CDs in your own library:

With a Little Help from My Friends (it is NOT about drugs despite what a reviewer says below)
    When I'm 64
    Birthday
    Hello Goodbye
    Yellow Submarine
    Octopus' Garden
    All Together Now
    Twist and Shout
    We Can Work it Out
    Nowhere Man
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (also NOT about drugs..it's based on John's son's drawing for crying out loud...how could it NOT be kid friendly? :)
    Hey Jude
Good Night (from the White Album..it's always sounded like a Disney song anyway!)
I'm Only Sleeping (from Revolver..this one probably IS about drugs, but it's so veiled a little kid won't pick up on it...they'll just take it at face value as a 'let me sleep in' song)
    All you Need is Love
Your Mother Should Know (from Magical Mystery Tour)

These should make a nice selection and get your kid started on appreciation of the Fabs.

    4-0 out of 5 stars it's not that bad...really
we borrowed this from the library and while some of it is a little thin, it's really quite cute. my oldest finds it enjoyable (he's a 6yr old beatle fan ;-) and that's really all that matters.personally, as i said, i find it a little thin (as most kid sung recordings are due to vocal strength, not poor singing ability).i think the best songs are 'dear prudence'-kid sung and 'octopus's garden'-raffi sung...but overall i give them an A for effort. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A book for new homeschoolers . . . and old pros alike!
Eleven years ago when my husband and I first considered homeschooling I was overwhelmed by the thought of my children's education depending on my ability. It was then I discovered books by a well-respected homeschooling advocate named Mary Pride. Her words provided sound advice, yet what helped even more was her encouragement that I could be the best teacher for my children. "Your home will be blessed for it. You can do it. Here's how," I felt her speaking through the pages.

Now with three kids who are thriving in home, school, and life, I was pleased to discover that Mary Pride's Complete Guide to Getting Started Homeschooling is available to a new generation of beginning homeschoolers. In my opinion, this is the user-friendliest book on the market, packed with tons of useful information. I guarantee that if it has to do with homeschooling . . . you'll find it in this book!

Mary Pride's desire to help parents raise God-loving children in a safe and happy environment, with the best resources and opportunities available, comes through on every page. For new homeschoolers, or those considering homeschooling, readers will discover everything they need to know, everything they wished they knew, or everything they didn't realize they needed to know about homeschooling! In fact, here's what one new homeschooling mom had to say:

"I received the Complete Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling as a Christmas gift when I hinted to my sister-in-law that I was considering homeschooling," says Shari, mother of four. "I have a 6-year-old in a private, Christian Kindergarten, a 4-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a 7-month-old. This was the first book I have read on the subject of homeschooling, and I quickly devoured the whole thing in the course of three days! It was all so new to me, and I have to admit that at times I was overwhelmed by all the information.
"Now I am reading the book a second time, at a slower pace so I can really digest all that this book has to offer. I appreciate the way that Mary Pride writes-candidly, humorously, factually, and Christ-centered.

"I am especially grateful for the introduction to `Educating the Whole-hearted Child,' as this approach seems to appeal to me the most," Shari continues. "I also appreciated the depth that Mary goes into on explaining unit studies. It does seem like a rather elusive method, but she has a way of explaining it that simplifies it and takes many of the unknowns out of developing your own unit studies.

"The only disappointing factor was that the Curriculum Quick Resource Guide was so quick.By the time I got to this section at the end of the book, I wanted to know everything about every curriculum, but I realize that is quite the undertaking. So now I'm looking forward to reading Complete Guide to Homeschooling from Birth-Grade 6.

"I found this to be a splendid book, and one that I will continually use as a reference and guide as I began my home school journey!"

Other information useful to new homeschoolers includes sections on Where to Shop, What to Expect, and Getting Them Ready to Learn.

Of course the title can be deceiving. This book isn't only useful to new homeschoolers. I've been heartedly recommending this book to veteran homeschoolers as well.

"I have been homeschooling for seven years," says Inez, mother of two. "And I found wonderful tips, suggestions, and great encouragement. I'm so thankful a friend recommended I get my hands on this book. I wish I had read this helpful guide when I first started homeschooling."

Veteran home educators will dive into a vast amounts of up-to-date information with sections on Field Trips, Conferences, Retreats & Homeschool Days for the Whole Family, and Worldview & Leadership Training for Teens. There's also information on how to find everything from contests, to how to write a winning college application essay. I especially enjoyed the section on How Has Homeschooling Changed, which gives wonderful insight to the homeschooling climate and how's it has changed, even in the last few years.

After four editions of The Big Book of Home Learning, Mary Pride has designed a new format that gives parents quality information at their fingertips. In addition, there are new chapters and even new sections in this edition. These new sections include topics such as Education 101, Unit Studies, Homeschooling with a School or Group, and Homeschooling Away from Home. New chapters include, How Has Homeschooling Changed? Seven New Reasons to Homeschool, Laptop Homeschooling, The Maloney Method, and The Wholehearted Method.

If there were one "top expert" in homeschooling, I would say Mary Pride is it. With her numerous books, Practical Homeschooling Magazine, and website (www.home-school.com), Mary knows her stuff. But her knowledge isn't just from her head, but also from her heart.

This new edition helps parents pinpoint the best teaching methods and learn about new homeschooling options and issues. But my favorite part is the inspiration I receive, knowing that success is available for my family and I as we continue to grow and learn together. This is a resource I'll use over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start!!!
Mary Pride's book is a great place to start your homeschool research if you are new to homeschooling. It's also a great place to refresh your memory and encourage you if you are a seasoned homeschooler. Her book tackles the expected questions new homeschoolers have--What's so great about homeschooling? How has homeschooling changed? Why do so many families homeschool?Ten things you need to know before you start. But, perhaps the most useful section for newbies is Part 2:Finding your Goals, Making Your plan, What to join, What to read, Where to Shop, What to Expect. Pride also goes into learning style, thinking styles and gives an extensive overview of each of the popular homeschooling methods, including the Classical approach, Unit Studies, Unschooling, Montessori, Laptop, Charlotte Mason, Eclectic methods, etc.A very useful and extensive resource that will save you a lot of time and grief.Worth purchasing as opposed to just checking it out of the library because it is so comprehensive and makes so many good suggestions as to books to read and places on the web to check out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Homeschooling
If you're looking for something you can confidently recommend to a new homeschooling family or even to those who have been homeschooling for several years, then you'll want to look at the new book, Mary Pride's Complete Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling. This book says it all and has it all -- everything important to get someone started in homeschooling: the 6 classic reasons why anyone would want to homeschool; short, concise answers to basic questions people have about homeschooling; ten things you need to know before you get started; answers to objections to homeschooling; the top ten books every new homeschooler should read; where to shop for curriculum, including a complete resource guide; a large section on popular homeschool methods, including a chapter on the classical approach where she discusses the main proponents of this approach; and much, much more. I especially love Mary's accurate history of homeschooling entitled "Who Are These Wacky Homeschoolers, Anyway?" And, since Mary Pride was actually there in the 1970's when homeschooling started to take off, you can believe it. There are two other volumes planned for this series: one on resources for preschool & elementary, and one on resources for middle school & high school. Used together, these three volumes will be a complete, self-contained encyclopedia of homeschooling.

    Editorial Review

From its smooth-gliding, dimpled, polished stainless-steel soleplate to its big 7.4-ounce transparent water tank, this iron is loaded with useful features. It delivers 1,400 watts of power, shuts off in 30 seconds if left horizontal or tipped over and in 8 minutes if left vertical, and has a self-cleaning button to flush out mineral buildup. For removing wrinkles in curtains and hanging garments, the iron can deliver vertical steam. It also has multiple steam settings and top-mounted buttons for a misting spray and a steam burst. The center-mounted pivoting cord prevents tangles and wraps around the iron's base for storage. This iron carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great If You Like An Iron That Shorts out and Leaks
Bought this iron about 4 years ago.For thepast year it has leaked all over the place and now it has just shorted out.Not worth the money; all the allegedly fine German engineering has yielded a real dog. You're better off taking your chances on a used iron at a garage sale. And that's not saying much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Iron that leaks
This iron leaked from the sides immediately after its first usage. The water tank was half full and everything leaked out from the base and it was a mess. I am never going to try Rowenta again. Very poor quality! I should have been more careful and read the reviews.

1-0 out of 5 stars One year life span for $50 iron
I wish I had read these reviews before purchasing this iron. I've been through 2 of these dogs in 3 years. I exchanged the first one at the retailer when it began leaking and stopped heating after 8 months. I had so much faith in German engineering I thought it must have been a fluke. The second one developed the same symptoms after 13 months. It worked sporadically until my husband hurled it at the floor in utter disgust. Apparently, the engineers have put all of their skills into producing a product that will survive until just past thedate the warranty expires. Bravo on their success!Next I tried a $19 iron, but the quality is unacceptable once you're accustomed to the heavy European styles. Yesterday I came home with the T-Fal, and it is comparable to the Rowenta in terms of weight and features. If this fails we're switching to permanent press... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Remember when the DustBuster first came out? Erase that memory. This baby is generations beyond that. You get more run time and more power than you would expect from a cordless vacuum, and here's a great improvement: B&D has increased the capacity by 70 percent. That's a lot of dust and grunge. Extra tools snap right onto the vacuum, ready at hand. Because it comes with two VersaPak batteries, you can keep one on charge while the other is in use and never be without your DustBuster. It's light, powerful, and cleans up small messes in a snap. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fixing the recharging problem with B&D DustBuster
I/ve fixed our problem with the DustBuster not holding a charge and not re-charging as follows: 1) Push release button and remove motor housing from vacuum 2) Gently remove the motor housing cover plate with a small flat bladed screwdriver 3) Remove fourscrews (two on outside and two on inside) with a long, small bladed phillips screwdriver (note how on/off switch and release button fits before separating housing 4) Turn switch on and let rotor run completely down...rotor will stop 5)Clean all copper with a Q tip and rubbing alcohol (move the switch back and forth to clean under it) Alclhol will self dry 6)Using a regular finger nail file, gently file contact points on motor and then on charging unit (you'll have to depress and hold charging unit contacts with your small screwdriver to make good contact)7) re-assemble the unit and charge overnight. You'll be amazed!!!After doing this, don't store the vac in the charger full time (it decreases battery power just like on any rechargeable appliance; and, let the battery completely run down about once a month then put it in the charger overnight. GGOD LUCK!

    Yoko

    Editorial Review

It is Yoko's first day at school, so of course her mother wants to sendher off with healthy comfort food for lunch--a delectable package of homemade sushi. "Have a wonderful day at school, my Little Cherry Blossom,"her mother says as Yoko climbs into the bus. And it would have been, had it not been for lunchtime. Timothy brings a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Tulip has Swiss cheese on rye. The Franks brothers have beans and franks. Butwhen Yoko opens her cooler of rice rolls with "the crispiest cucumber, the pinkest shrimp, the greenest seaweed, and the tastiest tuna," one of the Franks brothers announces, "Ick. It's green. It's seaweed." Tulip and Fritzchime in, "Yuck-o-rama."

Rosemary Wells (Voyage to the Bunny Planet), with her expressive, bright-eyed, chubby-cheeked animal kingdom, has once again successfully tapped into the emotional world of children. The embarrassment of bringing an uncool lunch to school! What child hasn't wanted to hide under the cafeteria table when caught with a gooey enchilada or a slice of vegetarian lentil loaf? Fortunately, Yoko's teacher concocts a plan to stop the teasing. Parents who have more ambitious hopes for their children's lunches than Fritos, PB&Js, and Oreos will be relieved to discover that the happy ending does not include Yoko's giving up her comfort meal or, more importantly, her heritage. 5-0 out of 5 stars Sends a great message to children
This is a wonderful story that celebrates the diversity of our nation, and shows that these differences are cause for celebration not ridicule. My daughter enjoyed this book, and followed the childrens feelings of the unusual lunch dish. When she said "ick!" and slowly began to wonder what sushi actually tastes like, it made me smile. She learned the first lesson of the differences in everyone.Rosemary Wells provided the stepping stone for understanding and tolerance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice story
This is the story of how Yoko brought Japanese food to school, and the reactions Yoko gets.Rosemary Wells has done a number of books about the kids at Hilltop school and turned it into a cartoon on PBS.She's also the author of the Max and Ruby 'Bunny' books.

This is a pretty simple little book but it has some good lessons tucked away in the story. First, it's good to try different foods. Second, its okay to be different. Third, the teacher is your friend and wants you to enjoy school. This is not a deep book, but Wells creates another story that small children will enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars not the ending I expected....
Somewhere three quarters of the way into this book, something happens. The book breaks away from the ending that my wife and I expected.Ms. Wells steers clear of the facile 'happy ending' and re-routes the book to new and different territory. In the hands of a lesser author we would have the entire class doing cartwheels for Yoko's sushi.Sorry, that doesn't happen.Instead we get a much different ending.Somehow that makes the book more tender.More realistic.Kudos to the author for the ability to make this true to the meaning of being a kid. ...
