Get geared up to deep-fry turkeys or steam a mess of mussels with this all-in-one kit. Thanks to the compact burner and aluminum cookware, you won't have to hire a trailer to take this cooking show to a friend's or a tailgate party. The 28-quart deep-fry pot and basket can handle a 16-pound turkey, a couple of chickens, or a small family of game hens, while the fish-fry pot can manage lobsters or whole trout easily. The kit's extra-large injector disperses up to 2 ounces of marinade in one shot through 12 holes in the stainless-steel needle. Use Eastman's recipes, such as Salsa Roja Ahumada and Southern Fried Pork Chops, to jump-start your outdoor cooking.Designed for compact stability, Eastman's high-Btu burner features a steel frame and wide base. A 39-inch hose and heat regulator give you distance from your fuel tank and a handle on the flame. At the end of your deep-fry session, pop the legs off the burner for tidy storage inside the pot. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This has more than one use
This is a great set to use when you want to start out to deep fry turkeys. It really gives you just about everything you need, with the noted exception of the turkey. We have used this set at a crawfish boil and it worked out very well.
Honestly we purchased this set becuase of its flexibility. This can deep fry turkey's, fry fish, and much more.We bought ours because we like to brew beer. Finally a way to brew beer outdoors!Stainless steel pots can be very expensive, one pot alone can set you back further than this whole set.
This set comes with some good accessories, and should be very versitile.Think about using this at your local chili cook off, or perhaps at a church function, picnic, and so much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanksgiving all year long!
Easy to use, convenient and wonderful food!We started out with chickens and will graduate to the big bird turkey.Lemon Peper marinate injected (with a little hot sauce to spice it up) and we were in business. Also cooked french fries and breaded chicken strips.A car load of my son's friends showed up and we wound up having a party!NOTHING was left!Between the deep fryer and the grill, we won't ever have to use the stove again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Eastman Outdoor Kit
I have seen this at work and was impressed.I cannot see how it can be a fire hazard, if used properly.I intend to buy one to use for when we are in the Nascar Infield, I am not too keen on deep fried foods but I think it would be excellent for steaming Lobster and clams. ... Read more

David Henry Sterry's account of his nine months as a male prostitute inLos Angeles could easily have been unrelievedly sordid. Instead, because herelates his bizarre adventures in the boy-toy trade with dark wit andconsiderable compassion, it proves to be that rare walk on the wild side you canthoroughly enjoy and not hate yourself for in the morning. The frankdescriptions of his "dates" range from wickedly funny (two women hire him toclean their house dressed in nothing but a see-through black apron while theyhave sex with each other) to baroque (at a costumed orgy, he performs variousacts with "Tinker Bell" while "Peter Pan" whips her) to extremely disturbing(one client has him dress in her dead son's clothes, then vomits after theirencounter). It all seems sadly, even touchingly human, thanks to Sterry'smatter-of-fact empathy for his disturbed customers. He's tougher on his parents, depicting them as essentially abandoning their 17-year-old son to the streets, but even here he sardonically steps back for the bigger picture, labeling Momand Dad "embodiments of the American Dream. They came to this country withbasically nothing but the clothes on their backs, and after twenty years of hardwork, sweat, and sacrifice, they were getting divorced, totally broke, and deepin therapy." Passages like that give Chicken its bite; the book gets itssoul from Sterry's nuanced portrait of his growing anguish as the work takes himto increasingly scary places, physically and emotionally. --Wendy Smith ... 3-0 out of 5 stars easy read told with good humor
I thought this book was very easy read because of the tongue-in-cheek style of the author and the brashness of the telling. My only complaint is that this book is not longer. I felt like I read a long story in a magazine.

I thought his "tricks" were very interesting stories and I wanted to hear more of them.

It's funny he thanks his parents at the end. By the end of the book we hate them. (or is it at the beginning?)

If you liked this book Permanent Midnight by Jerry Stahl and Dry by Augusten Burroughs are even better.

I hope this author writes more books and longer ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written but too sad for most folks
The author is abandoned by his family at 17 and ends up being raped by a stranger. After that encounter he's discovered by a "friendly" manager who sells him to well to do women as a male prostitute. This aint Richard Gere in American Gigolo and it's not Deuce Bigelo either. There's no romance or beauty in the boy toy business.

The book is not fun but it's well written. You get an unfiltered look into an ugly world. Luckily, the author escaped the chicken life relatively unscathed.

How successful will this book be? Somehow I don't expect to see this book on too many people's coffee tables and I doubt that it will be cocktail party conversation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only in California
David Henry Sterry packed a lot into his nine month stint as a male prostitute in California. For all those guys who wished they could have been Richard Gere in American Gigolo, you should pick up a copy of this book; it will dash your indulgent fantasies.

"Chicken" tells Sterry's story of family dejection and his fast leap into the freakish world of prostitution. On the journey, he mentions various strange meetings and requests of his "clients"--but don't be too anxious to believe these vignettes will tantalize. It's obvious Sterry is speaking from the heart and instead of exciting me (I didn't expect it to) this well-written book made my stomach turn.Even with all the mentioning of orgies and sexual conduct, you can still sense the young boy whose life is being destroyed.

The prose is beautifully, albeit aggressively, written. And other than a few anachronisms (were there really pagers in the seventies?) you can't help but love this book. One of the best I have read this year.

And as you read Sterry's book--and I highly suggest you do--you can't help but hear the echo of what the author calls instruction #8: If something seems weird, it probably is. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Alfred Hitchcock takes on Sigmund Freud in this thriller in which psychologist Ingrid Bergman tries to solve a murder by unlocking the clues hidden in the mind of amnesiac suspect Gregory Peck. Among the highlights is a bizarre dream sequence seemingly designed by Salvador Dali--complete with huge eyeballs and pointy scissors. Although the film is in black and white, the original release contained one subliminal blood-red frame, appearing when a gun pointed directly at the camera goes off. Spellbound is one of Hitchcock's strangest and most atmospheric films, providing the director with plenty of opportunities to explore what he called "pure cinema"--i.e., the power of pure visual associations. Miklós Rózsa's haunting score (which features a creepy theremin) won an Oscar, and the movie was nominated for best picture, director, supporting actor (Michael Chekhov), cinematography, and special visual effects. --Jim Emerson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I stayed up way too late watching this video...
But Hitchcock certainly knows how to hold your attention. This movie was of interest to me because of how a professional woman was portrayed at a time when women were largely restricted from entering the professions (other than nurse or teacher).Ingrid Bergman's psychoanalyst character is the only woman physician at the mental hospital she works at.In some ways, her role fits in the stereotypes of women (turning to mush when they fall in love) but on the whole, Bergman's character is quite gutsy -- particularly at the suspenseful end.She manages to hold her own in what was surely a difficult environment for women -- but then you'd need to be a tough woman to compete in that environment.

The plot involves a new director at the mental hospital, supposedly a famous psychoanalyst. Bergman quickly figures out he's an imposter, but not before she's fallen in love (in one day!I told you, the part about the irrationality of women in love is something of a male fantasy). Her colleagues are not far behind her in figuring out this man is an imposter, but the real Dr. Edwards has vanished and the imposter could be the killer.

So what does Bergman do?She tries to cure the patient, made more difficult because they end up on the run. Sounds a bit silly in the telling, but honestly, it's a very compelling movie that reminded me of North by Northwest, probably because both movies involve a pursuit.

If you haven't seen this movie, you definitely need to see it -- this is classic Hitchcock and ages very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars "YOU CAN REMEBER , YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO REMEMBER!"
Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck star in this dazzaling Hitchcock thriller. Bergman plays a doctor at an home for the insane or the troubled minded. The institution is soon visited by a strange Dr.Edwards{Peck, Or so we think}. Bergman soon finds out that Peck is an imposter, An imposter who believes he murdered the real doctor. To unlock the doors of his mind Bergman and Peck set out to find if Peck really did kill the missing doctor. Which leads to many nights filled with horrible dreams of murder and betrayal. Hitchcock couldn't have done a finer job with this mystery, It's gaurenteed to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Starring Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman With Michael Checkhov, Leo G. Carrol, Rhonda Flemming, John Emery and Norman Llyod. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 111 Minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Hitchcock films
This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

Spellbound is one of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock films for two reasons.

    1. The use of a theremin in the soundtrack is among one of the first times it was used in a movie score but did not gain major recognition until it's use in "The Day the Earth Stood Still"

    2. The dream sequence devised by Salvador Dalí is very impressive and is a great example of surrealism ans dadaism in cinema.

The film is about a woman who works at a mental institution who assists her new boss with some problems he has, but things are not as they seem. It is very difficult to reveal any more about the plot without a spoiler so I will stop here.

The film's soundtrack by Miklos Rozsa won an Academy Award® for bst original score and is superb, especially with the use of a theremin. The acting by Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant are very impressive and among their greatest performances. Salvador Dalí's dream sequence in the film is very famous and very well choreographed.

The DVD's special features are also very well done and comprehensive.

There is of course the near-obligatory theatrical trailer and hundreds of photos from publicity stils production stills and lobby cards.

Hitchcock scholar Marian Keane does a great audio commentary and as it is a psychological thriller, she makes many analyses of scenes from a Freudian perspective.

There is also the Lux Radio Theatre adaptation bordcast in 1948

There is also a large presentation about the Ddream sequence with storyboards and script excerpts of delected scenes. There are also two essays by other Hitchcock Scholars which are quite good.

Finally two special features about the soundtrack which are an audio interview with the composer, Miklos Rozsa, and an NPR broadcast about the theremin, which is the signature musical instrument used in the soundtrack.

This DVD went out of print in January of 2004 and as with all OOP Criterion DVD's the price goes up a lot over time.

Best to buy soon while it is still cheap! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Taped as a lavish cable television special in 1997, One Night Only trades on the Bee Gees' shape-shifting career as pop survivors. Over the course of 111 minutes, this straightforward concert, produced at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and groomed for both video and CD posterity, sprints through 31 songs from their past three decades.Even after the inevitable disco jokes are expended, and the jaundiced viewer contemplates the role hats, hairspray, and comb-overs now play in dressing the once stylishly long-haired troika, the Gibb brothers' signature vocal harmonies and hook-laden song craft beg respect.

Casual listeners can't be blamed for equating the Bee Gees with the dance floor bonanza they reaped through 1978's Saturday Night Fever, yet that commercial zenith was actually the culmination of a comeback for a group that had seemed washed up by the early '70s. One Night Only thankfully takes an even-handed view of both their original late '60s hits ("Massachusetts," "To Love Somebody," "Lonely Days"), building from a cannily Beatle-browed vocal sound, and the '70s blue-eyed soul ("Jive Talkin'," "Nights on Broadway") that led them naturally into disco. The Fever hits are here, as are Gibb originals that clicked for other acts; the family circle also widens for a posthumous duet with their late brother, Andy Gibb, while Celine Dion gets star billing in the collaborative "Immortality." --Sam Sutherland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great. Great. Great!
This DVD shows how amazing the Gibb brother's voices really are.The harmonies are just plain beautiful. And, I found myslef tearing up on the "duet" with Andy.Made me want to get all my old albums our and listen again.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this 10 stars!
For anyone who group up on the Bee Gees, the live album we all owned and loved was "Frampton Comes Alive." Alright, I know you have all hidden the vinyl copy of that one away in the recesses of your closet and won't 'fess up to spinning that one 24/7 "back in the day." Well, I have news: this live performance beats any I have heard, it's *that good.* The Bee Gees, like McCartney, have always taken great pains to sing their songs live as closely as possible to the original. I appreciate this and their efforts to duplicate their classics here meet with much success. Particularly amazing is Robin's haunting, gorgeous vocal on "I Started a Joke," one of the great Bee Gees of all time. Similarly impressive is "New York Mining Disaster," which shows the brothers still had the ability to harmonize beautifully.

The only slight criticism is Barry's high notes and falsetto, which he strains to reach, especially on "Stayin' Alive." He's backed up with some invisible (and pre-recorded) mystery voices, but his ability to sustain the high notes has decreased with time. Personally, I don't care. This is an awesome live performance and for anyone who admires the brothers Gibb, this is something from which you'll derive hours of enjoyment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gibbs Come Alive On Screen!
This video is very much like the album of the same name. I have given details of this concert for the album(see the ONE NIGHT ONLY CD). However, the playing time of this video is just a bit longer than the album itself. I remember from the concert, not the album, that at one point,Maurice introduced the band. One participant was Barry Gibb's son Stephen. This is one of a handful of concerts that was both seen and heard by those who were or were not in attendance at Las Vegas,Nevada's MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on November 14,1997. The Gibbs were promoting the STILL WATERS album released six months earlier. Too bad there was no video version of HERE AT LAST,the Gibbs' first live set, recorded in 1976. ... Read more

Zap Mama are five women who are each of mixed African and European ancestry. They sing a cappella (with a little hand percussion sprinkled in) in a hybrid style that befits their background. The opening song is a spirited version of a Zairian Pygmy chant with a French recitation in the middle; the second song is an original new- wave, doo-wop number sung in English and percussive scat syllables. The rest of this album falls between those poles, absorbing sources from Cuba, Syria, Belgium, Rwanda, and Tanzania and remaking everything with a hip rock & roll modernism that gives the ancient vocal traditions an elliptical montage effect and a refreshing irreverence. --Geoffrey Himes ... Like nothing I've heard before. These women are phenominal.I've listened to this CD over a dozen times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime
What incredible voices! There are nothing but vocals and percussion on this CD, but it is as textured and layered as anything that can be done with instruments. This music makes me feel exalted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bobby McFerrin meets the Mahotella Queens
This first album by Zap Mama is their purest. It's almost entirely a capella, and is the least influenced by American pop culture. It's a fine balance between European and African influences, and the songs span 400years of composition history.

To know Zap Mama is to love them. Thisgroup tackles every song with energy and enthusiasm, and their liveperformances are such a visual feast that you hardly know where to look atany moment. Their repertoire is so geographically diverse that I get cabinfever just listening to them.

When this album was recorded, Zap Mama wasa core group of five singers, with additional guest vocals. The singers, especially Marie Daulne, have rich voices with a husky timbre. One at atime they are a delight to listen to; in harmony, they make me delirious.

The songs on this album all good, but there are a few standouts."Brrrlak!," released as a single, is a fast tempo charmer withsophisticated rhythms. "Plekete" is an onomatopoetic road trip(literally), complete with car horns, a squeal of tires, and an ambulancesiren.Three themes are presented one at a time, and the song culminateswith a cleverly crafted overlay of all three. (This was the first Zap Mamasong I ever heard; my then-toddler and I saw them perform it on, of allthings, Sesame Street. I bought the album post-haste.) "Bottom,"the only song with lyrics entirely in English, tells a story that is asunderstated as the film "Titanic" is over-the-top (and it's wayshorter, at only one minute and twenty-nine seconds). "Din Din"shows off the group's remarkable intonation and precision. The introductorysection of "Ndje Mukanie" does likewise.

Many of the songs onthis album don't follow the standard popular song structure ofverse-chorus-verse, and most of the time that's quite refreshing. But"Babanzele" leaves me longing for that familiar form; it's just abit too static for something that long (seven minutes and thirty-fiveseconds). "Mizike" also seems a little long to me, and perhapsdated (hard to tell when you don't have a clue about the lyrics).

Leadsinger and founder Marie Daulne is of both Belgian and Zairean descent, andmusically, she's all over the globe. Most of what's on this album isn't inEnglish, but that's actually an advantage; you can revel in the sounds andrhythms undistracted by the message of the songs. But even if these womenwere singing the contents of the phone book (and who knows? maybe theyare), I'd be glued to the CD player till they were finished. I bet you willbe too, when you hear Adventures in Afropea 1. ... Read more

In hip-hop, respect is like currency, and by the mid-'90s MC Hammer was as bereft of props as he was of cash. But there was a short period in the early '90s when every clock in the land read "Hammer time," and truth be told, he was the artist who introduced a lot of kids to hip-hop and its many possibilities. The driving force behind Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, of course, is the irrepressible single "U Can't Touch This," built on the central riff from Rick James's immortal "Super Freak." Hammer also scored with album cuts "Here Comes the Hammer," "Have You Seen Her," and "Pray," but after that, it was a short trip from Benzes to VH1's Behind the Music. --Daniel Durchholz ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The worst album in hip hop history.
Yup, and for a long time it was the best selling in history. What a mockery. The beats on here are barely even beats.I don't know how the describe them they're so wack. The worst afrocentric McDonald's commercials have better production. And Hammer could never rap, his skills are non-existant.He could dance though. But dancing really doesn't translate to a CD, so theres absolutely nothing of value here other than a few cheap laughs in a "WTF were they thinking" kinda vein.Hammers just lucky he got to sample Super Freak, and he could dance. That pretty much exaplains the phenomena of Hammer.Only get this for free if it has some kinda weird, nostalgic value to you, other wise leave it in the mark down bin and go find some real Hip Hop.

2-0 out of 5 stars When Mass Production Goes Horribly, Horribly wrong...
MC Hammer.Then... "Hammer".Then the out of control payroll. The mega dancers... the big show, the baggy pants, the funky hair-cut... the bankruptcy, Vanilla Ice Feud, and then Surreal Life with Webster.MC HAMMER!This was the second big album from the late-80's, early 90's dance guru that had a penchant of taking old school baselines and tunes while dancing to them with this enormous entourage of performers.1990... the year of Wilson Philips, Milli Vanilli, Sinead O'Conner, Bel Biv Devoe and loads of others.Or was it 1989?Bah.. does it really matter?

To be fair, this really WAS the bees knees back then.Who can forget "2 Legit 2 Quit", or how about "U Can't Touch This"?That song was so wildly overplayed that I actually credit it for teaching me the basics into radio programming and commercialism and the value of my own personal collection. My word... I'm getting nightmares just thinking about how you could turn from one station to the next, and then to the NEXT with the same bloody song still on the radio. But it got the dance parties going and you just weren't in the know if you didn't have your copy of MC Hammer's album in your jr. high school. And gees... this was so un-original.I mean, they took the line from Prince's cut yet "When Dove's Cry" wasn't ancient when this came out. Then the "Have You Seen Her" love wrap was sorta funny and cool (back then). But y'know, now that my memory is jogged, I don't think I was so impressed with the general album in the early 90's either because there were some crummy tracks in it even for that time period.

For the sheer comedy value, I'd recommend this. For the 'musical value', i'd say your red cent is better spent in the circling coin rolling machine at your local shopping center.Yes, people are actually selling this for 1 cent (maybe not even American...) - that's perhaps a fraction of the cost of shipping!I'd actually haggle with them until they agree to pay the shipping for you and throw in the atrocious bomb of a 'step' album that he put out in the mid 90's too.Looking at all of the behind the scenes things that happened, the rise and fall of such artists that came from his entourage (B Angie B, Vanilla Ice, etc.) you can't help but remember the past and chuckle. The image of the video to "Can't Touch This" alone puts me in tears ... the bridge where he dances - priceless.Yet I can't be too hard on him - Hammer was always about the live shows and if you got to go to those, the man could really move!I mean, didn't it help distract you from the hollow lyrics too?But I guess in an era with emerging gangsta rap (NWA, etc. were still on the rise), it was a welcome, lighter change.

Years later I can't for the life of me understand what I

    Editorial Review

It takes a huge amount of oil to deep-fry and it's a shame tothrow it all away afterward. However, you can filter out any foodparticles and reuse oil as long as it's stored properly to avoidspoiling and reheated to a minimum of 350 degrees F for sterilization.Eastman Outdoors' cooking-oil filter pump takes the mess out of thefiltering process as there is no risk of spillage. Shaped like a longwand, the pump is 27-1/2 inches long so it can reach oil at the bottomof the tallest stockpots. Running off of three D batteries, the pumpsiphons leftover oil from your cooking pot into a storage container viaa 26-inch-long plastic tube. A filter within the pump ensures that anybits of food or seasoning that could potentially taint the oil are leftbehind. The pump comes with three replacement filters but batteriesmust be purchased separately. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

The instructions said the oil needed to be at room temperature.I waited until the oil was at 75 degrees and started pumping. The pump started working and transfered about 1/2 gallon then it stopped.I tried turning it off and on several times as well as reseating the batteries.

I wasn't expecting much for less than $10 and I got what I expected.I guess it's back to my self priming syphon hose. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Should I Be Different?
So far, everybody gives this CD 5 stars.I feel the same way.I remember hearing the group's first hit in 1961, "Every Beat of My Heart".I still have the song on a 33 1/3 vinyl of the greatest hits of that year. And what guy can't be moved to being told, "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me"."Midnight Train to Georgia" from 1973 remains a classic (though it was almost Midnight Plane to Houston).Great songwriting and great heartfelt delivery; Gladys always sings the truth. It's all here.Five Stars and Change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection!
Gladys Knight & The Pips has had a lot more than just ten hits, but the first 8 songs on this album is perhaps their 8 best.I'm very happy that the last two songs "Letter Full Of Tears" and "Every Beat Of My Heart" are included which is hard to find on CD.You won't go wrong if you buy this, but if you want more songs on one CD then get their most recent collections : "Essential" and/or "Ultimate Collection".

4-0 out of 5 stars Soul Survivors
This is the absolute crème de la crème of hits from Gladys Knight and The Pips' in the late 1960s and up to the middle 1970s. Of course this long-lasting soul outfit has been a hit machine for many decades and this collection is anything but comperehensive, while at the same time containing their most enduring chart hits.

There's the achingly beautiful I Heard It Through The Grapevine and the equally emotional Neither One Of Us, the rousing Friendship Train and the magnificent number 1 hit Midnight Train To Georgia. My other favourites include The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me, and I've Got To Use My Imagination.

Gladys Knight & The Pips started their hit-making career in the early 1960s and in my opinion reached their peak in the period from 1968 to 1974 that is covered by this album. If you just want the very greatest hits by this legendary soul band, this album is ideal. For those who would like a more comprehensive set, I recommend The Essential Collection (1999) that also includes their graceful version of The Way We Were/Try To Remember and the passionate I Don't Want To Do Wrong from 1971. ...
