5-0 out of 5 stars !!!DAZZLEZZA!!!
who can compete with tolstoy?!who can portray life in more clarity dazzlezzan than he?who narrates to the reader that which causes more snows to melt and more waters to boil than he?although proust might penetrate his characters' forums in greater depth and although his mind might wander into larger and more far-flung kingdoms and might consider more ideas and although joyce might impress us with more florabundant virtuosity or astonish us with wind-swept innovation, it is tol-stoy that presents to us the human comedy in brilliant simplic-ity and clarity.how much we learn from this author!how many new absurdities he unveils to us!how many secrets he divulges!new vices, cutthroats, fallacies, flounderings in irra-tionality, enslavement to chimerae, consortions with succubae - all these shine brightly in tolstoy's cosmos with no less brilliantica than the red giant sirius!tolstoy exposes us immediately to a character's nobility or corruptibility, he does not obsess tediously on minutia, nor does he conflate what is insignificant, nor does melodramatize in a cheap attempt to twist the reader's nerves - in contrarium!he is faithful to life's maximo, he adheres to its covert principles and its clandestine regulations.just as newton astonishes us with three simple laws of motion, so elemantery that we are vexo-mystified that they were not discovered sooner, so too does tolstoy astound us again and again by exposing the hidden pecularities of his characters.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only three stars because I'm only halfway finished!
Okay, so I picked this up and couldn't put it down!

And then I went on vacation, and it was just not beach-type reading material.

However, I do intend to finish it.That being said, I liked the "Peace" parts of the book better than the "War" parts.Maybe it's the girl in me.Fighting and armies, and politics don't do it for me, but this is HALF of the book, so be warned.

I was more attracted to the daily lives and doings of the families- the loves, the losses, the parties, etc.

Read it just to say you've read it, and you'll probably end up liking it!

5-0 out of 5 stars "WAR & PEACE..."
Yeah, I know this might sound funny but I'm already a War-and-Peace-a-maniac, and I'm just over 11 year-of age! OK, but the truth is I haven't read it yet, but the reason I want to read it is because it's the suppose-to-be "FINEST NOVEL EVER WRITTEN!" Heck, I don't know 'bout that, but I do know that I'm gonna try to getat least 5 to 6 hundred pages in, then I'll see if "WAR & PEACE"really is the "FINEST NOVEL EVER WRITTEN!"

P.S. Like heck I hope I'll like it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have yet to get the videos, but saw it on TV
I watched the series on TV in 1973,and then they were repeated in a shortened format in 1974.
It was shown in full on pay TV awhile ago,but I don't have pay TV.
I bought the booklet released by the BBC at the time, and still have it.

I have been after this for soooo long.
I know Hopkins et all are good, but it is the young Morag Hood as Natashia that makes this special.
    I don't know what became of thisfine actress,but I was/am besotted!!
I do hope the 6 Videos include all the scenes.
When broadcast again in 1974,scenes such as Natashia dancing after a "hunt" were left out.
    Delightful Russian dancing!

This isn't a review as I am waiting on the videos, but it is the only TV series,or movie that has remained in my minda as "special".

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually, on a par with 'I Claudius'
This twenty-part epic made by BBC TV in 1972 is one of the greatest dramas ever made. A previous reviewer complained that it was a pointless soap opera and 'far below "I Claudius"'. I agree with their comments about 'I Claudius', as that was also wonderful. However, this person clearly missed the point of 'War and Peace'. It is a timeless story about real life and characters that are so fully developed and brilliantly portrayed that they are practically real. If anything, 'I Claudius' is quite soap operatic, despite being based on real events.

Do not let this reviewer put you off investing in a truly remarkable drama serial. The locations are very impressive for 1972 - it was partly filmed in Yugoslavia - and the script by Jack Pulman is excellent, astonishingly faithful to the book. The sets are authentic, the costumes beautiful and the direction very good.

Anthony Hopkins steals the show with a magnificent, multi-layered performance, for which he deservedly won the 1973 BAFTA for Best Actor. The rest of the cast is flawless, particular standouts being Alan Dobie, Morag Hood, Sylvester Morand, Joanna David, Angela Down, Faith Brook and Frank Middlemass.

Do not hesitate about buying this production as it may not be available forever. Just when will this masterpiece be available in its original episodic format, complete with interviews etc, on DVD?

2-0 out of 5 stars Far below I, Claudius
I got this BBC mini-series because I found "I Claudius" to be the best historical fiction I had ever experienced in any medium and since this was also written by Jack Pulman, I had hoped it would be of the same quality. It wasn't. W & P is tedious in the extreme and continuously put me to sleep. Unlike the powerful dramatic narrative that seized my attention in Claudius and pulled me relentlessly through to the end, W & P seems pointless - a prolonged upperclass Russian soap opera. ... EverQuest: The Scars of Velious

    Editorial Review

Once the EverQuest: The Scars of Velious expansion pack has youin its icy grasp, you'll likely be wishing for a long winter just so you canstay indoors and play without feeling guilty. The new snowbound continentgives veterans of the game an enormous new area to explore and exploit, comprised of16 distinct and challenging zones.

It wouldn't be an EverQuest game if the new world wasn't populated withan array of dangerous beasts, and Velious has more than its fair share. The new enormous creatures like storm giants and ice dragons will have novicesscurrying for their lives, and are powerful enough to truly challenge a teamof seasoned adventurers. In fact, beginners should definitely spend a lot of timewith the original game (including The Ruins of Kunark) before eventhinking about entering the unforgiving land of Velious. This world was obviously designed to give powerful high-level characters a serious challenge.

Some long-awaited technology improvements prove that Verant Interactive isdevoted to improving the game. The graphics have been cleaned up and are moredetailed than those found in previous installments. The interface has beenupdated to run at all resolutions, meaning no more jarring resolution switcheswhen doing things such as buying equipment. On the gameplay side, there aremany in-game factions players can align themselves with, and the inevitablerivalries add an extra level of depth to the fun. There are also plenty of quests tosolve, and the best part of EverQuest--its devoted onlinecommunity--only gets better with time. EverQuest subscribers will definitely want topick up this expansion. --T. Byrl Baker

    Pros:

    • Better graphics, with a tightly maintained theme
    • Gives high-level characters plenty to do
    • Interface enhancements allow for smoother gameplay
    Cons:
    • Far too tough for beginners
    • If you don't like EverQuest, this won't change your mind

5-0 out of 5 stars EQ: Scars of Velious: An unequalled high point
Note: This review is ONLY about the "Scars of Velious" add-on to Everquest, and not the game itself.

"Scars of Velious" (referred to as SoV or simply "Velious") is an Everquest expansion for levels 27-65. Unlike other expansions, it does not introduce a new race, a new class, raise the level cap or introduce a lot of special new abilities (although it does introduce a few for melees). Instead, its focus was on content.

Specifically, it covers the frozen lost continent of Velious, home to a race of shipwrecked dwarves from Faydwer (in the original Everquest), trying to survive when faced by hostile giants and ancient dragons. The struggle between these three forces defines the expansion -- if you spend more than an hour here, you're more or less forced to choose sides, and who you fight determines how the other sides view you, which in turn closes off some content and opens up other content, as you become part of the battle for the future of this continent.

The epitome of this struggle are two parallel quests for melees and spellcasters given out by the Coldain dwarves. Each is a multistage quest, and involves you proving your loyalty to the Coldain in their war against the giants. At first, the tasks they assign you are mundane -- deliver this axe to be sharpened, keep my nephew the "great hunter" out of trouble, go deliver some food to the captain of the guard -- but they culminate in skirmishes and even a full fledged war that totally redoes one zone for several hours in a pitched battle (lead by the players) between the giants and dwarves.

Even for players not interested in this content (the ring war in the Great Divide is a high level raid), the expansion offers the best dungeons in EverQuest, amazing new cities, two new planes, high level spells, and a greater concentration of dragons than any other expansion in the game.

While much of EverQuest can, at times, feel like a fantasy version of Quake, Velious lives up to the promise of an online roleplaying game that immerses players in another place and time. Featuring landscapes so chilly, you find yourself putting on a sweater, terrifying enemies, and great acts of heroism, "Scars of Velious" is the peak of the EverQuest experience.

This expansion receives my strongest possible recommendation to all EverQuest players with characters level 27 and up.

    2-0 out of 5 stars ...
i been playing everquest for a long time and sov is no better then the first or lulcin verant willstill never allow you to make a dime spawns still never drop anything, it used to be fun when they would allow people to make a living but now nothing drops anymore ,or its all no drop you have to go [somewhere else] just to be able to get armor cause verant refeuses to let anybody make any plat or loot and when you do camp something youre sitting there for 10 hours in a group with 6 people and have to roll for it it would be a great game if they would just allow people to actually get armor and gear but they wont and the techinal staff [is bad]but thats just myoppinion of the game

    Editorial Review

The GE 74839 gradual-wake alarm clock not only provides two different wake settings, it also offers advanced features such as the Graduwake ramp-up alarm, nap functionality, and programmable snooze.

The Graduwake function offers a more pleasant waking experience: it begins at a low level and gradually increases in volume until it is turned off or the snooze function is activated. The nap function allows you to set a quick alarm for short intervals or sleep without disturbing the wake-up alarm settings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Reliable.
This clock is a piece of junk. It has a good set of features, but the alarm doesn't always go off. Perhaps 1 in 20 times, it just makes a faint click. If the alarm can't be depended on to work without fail, it makes the whole thing kind of useless as an alarm clock.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for college students
The two alarm settings come in handy for my school schedule.I set alarm one for M/W/F and alarm two for Tu/Th.And the nap function is wonderful. The alarm sound is pretty mellow--I much prefer it to being jolted out of bed, but use the radio for an alarm and turn it up loud if you are a heavy sleeper.I have tested the battery backup and it works great.I highly recommend this alarm clock.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mine broke, but I'll buy another
I already own one of these, purchased 7 months ago.It broke aweek ago, which makes me wonder about the quality of the production. However, the functionality of the alarm is great! All other alarmclocks become background noise for me after awhile, allowing me tosleep through them (and through the first few hours of work!).Thisone has woken me up every day that I've turned it on.

The Napfunction is also fantastic, allowing me to powernap for a designatedperiod of time without disrupting the settings of the other two dailyalarms.

Even if it breaks, I've gotten more than my $... worth. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a Swinging!
I bought this for really cheap and I cant wait until spring when I can use it!I didnt think that I wanted a rope hammock, but the price was right and now that I have it I love it and cant wait to use it outside!

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it time
It is funny to read these review of people complaining of the hammock sagging.Of course being a cotton hammock, there is some stretch to work out of it.The first time I sat on it, I was on the ground rather quickly. However, unlike the other negative reviews, I simply retied the knots to make it tight again.Magically, the hammock stayed up, some people need to learn patience!I spent most of my summer taking a nap, and reading books on it. I recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love mine!!!
It does stretch a little, but I weigh 190lbs, and set at the tightest links, it is heaven on earth. The stand was super simple to assemble (no screws!) and with a pillow, stress just melts away! ... Read more
