5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a great book for the gardener with little space. All of the gardens featured are pretty small by suburban standards. But none the less, the gardens and designs Keith Davitt covers are spectacular.
You will discover how to get rid of that same old boring lawn that everyone else has on the block. Davitt takes you through creating your very own unique garden with stone, brick, gravel, water and lots more. He covers why it works for the owner and the space given. It gives valuable insights for the gardener planning a new space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crafting a unique, personal, and relaxing atmosphere
Written by gardening expert Keith Davitt (winner of the Herald Award for Excellence in Garden Communication), Beyond The Lawn: Unique Outdoor Spaces For Modern Living is a simply beautiful and exceptionally "user friendly" sourcebook of ideas for creating harmony with stone, brick gravel, rock, water, herbs, conifers, planted pots, native and wild plants. Lavishly illustrated with full-color photography, Beyond The Lawn is a treat to page through and recommended for gardeners everywhere looking to add a bit of originality to the grounds outside their home. Offering a vast panoply of materials for crafting a unique, personal, and relaxing atmosphere, Beyond The Lawn is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to professional and personal gardening reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many unusual beautiful gardens & good design analysis
This book is full of pictures of unusual and beautiful gardens all very different from one another.I especially enjoyed seeing the variety of what is possible. The text focuses mainly on design with discussion on style and analysis of what works and why.Although I think Keith Davitt's first book "Small Spaces Beautiful Gardens" was a superior book with more information on how each garden was created and before & after pictures, I still highly recommend this book for its many examples and design tips. ... Editorial Review

Keith Davitt's Small Spaces, Beautiful Gardens celebrates the possibilities for awkward, undersized garden parcels, demonstrating convincingly that no space is too small to make a big impact. Lacking dimensionality, most small gardens can be taken in visually with one glance. Davitt offers solutions for creating a sense of spaciousness and surprise, even in the most cramped, unlikely location.

A landscape designer, builder, photographer, and writer, Davitt draws on 16 projects from his own portfolio. "Before" and "after" photographs help illustrate both the process and principles of reconfiguring an outdoor space. Who could imagine, for example, that as ugly a duckling as a narrow, shaft-like urban lot surrounded on three sides by cinderblocks, painted brick, and metal piping could be transformed into an enchanting series of multi-leveled wood decks, enlivened with container plantings?

Davitt’s ideas are all the more convincing because he has photographed the gardens between peak bloom periods. Although spaces are lush with plant life, the book's emphasis is more on design than plant selection. Offering neither budget remedies nor step-by-step technical advice, Small Spaces, Beautiful Gardens is, itself, a beautiful book to pore over for inspiration. --Jennifer Wyatt ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great ideas for small gardens
I found this book to be especially helpful in visualizing small gardens.I wish that he had included some of the plant names used and sample gardening diagrams, but overall it's a great book for ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Esthetically engaging and pleasureable
The simplicity with which Keith Davitt has been able to convey complicated design concepts is extraordinary. He has combined this with exquisite illustrations and "before and after" photography. This book will inspire you with the confidence to transform even the most mundane of spaces into a visual and livable joy. It's also a must on our coffee table!

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Spaces, Beautiful Gardens
The ideal book for someone who is facing a vacant lot or garden wasteland and is interested in tapping the talent, inspiration and guidance of a gifted garden designer. Kevin Davitt takes the reader through a great number of his real life garden designs, challenging us to listen to the hidden "genius" in your prospective site.Eloquent and thoughtful, his writing is clear and encouraging, helping us to discover and visualize the sanctuary our garden space can become.Filled with beautiful photographs and drawings and side bars highlighting the key ideas in each project, we are gently introduced to the authors philosophy of space and nature. The author shares his years of experience and design wisdom so you can create a space that enhances your home and recharges and inspires your relationship to mother nature.A joy to read, makes you want to get outside and start building.Focuses on small urban and suburban garden designs, but ideas can apply to all garden design processes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dress Up Your Yard
According to the author, "Concrete isn't just for sidewalks anymore." Included in this colorfully illustrated how-to book are step-by-step instructions for making a frog fountain, garden "critters," concrete fossils, a masonry planter, a birdbath, and much more. Projects are divided into sections by skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. For those who are new to working with concrete, there are also chapters on concrete basics, forming and construction techniques, and surface treatments. (reviewed by South TX Library System)

4-0 out of 5 stars AVID BUYERS BEWARE
This is an excellent primer.I recommend it whole-heartedly because you won't see this good info anywhere else EXCEPT...another book by the same author titled CREATING WITH CONCRETE.Both books are identical, page for page--only the titles are different. So don't do what I did and avidly run out and buy that book too thinking it's new info...It's identical!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best How-To Book I Have Ever Read
I can't say enough about how easy to follow the instructions are in this book - you are never left wondering - how did she go from this step to the next step? Plenty of information (written and pictured) about concrete as a material, as well as interesting projects to follow or to use as models and inspiration to make your own ideas into reality. I think this is the best how-to book I've ever seen - you can feel very confident in your work with this book as a guide. I've made several projects based on what I've learned and enjoyed them all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Gardening Book
55 Reviewers pretty much say it all, but I just had to add to the applause.I have used this book as a reference for over 20 years, and have used Mel's methods in the sands of Florida, the gumbo of Texas, and now the 'barely there' soil of Northern Virginia. And what have I gotten... production and ease!

Based in part on the French Intensive method of gardening, you pretty much can avoid the inherent soil problems of where you live and grow veggies and flowers with little weeding and grunting.

Ideas in this book include:

How to prepare the soil (fertilizers, conditioners)
How to put together raised beds and other support structures if you want them

A guide for popular vegetables
-- how and when to plant them, including how to start seeds
-- the what-fors of watering
-- common pest and disease problems

In my opinion this easy to read book is a gardening staple good for all levels of experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars I tried it and it worked!
I bought this book last spring and put it to use immediately in my 4x8 foot raised bed.I am in SE Alaska with rocky soil, lots of rain, long days and short growing season but my garden was beautiful.

It was also low maintainance!I could probably count on one hand the number of times I weeded.

We had fresh salads whenever we wanted (all summer long) and best of all my 4 year old daugther loved to help pick it.She is insisting on her own garden this spring and I am going to build her the recommended children's garden from the book of a 3x3 foot square.

The system is so simple and the results are very satisfying.I had doubts about my garden from the beginning but I shouldn't have worried. It far surpassed my expectations and I have plans for an even bigger garden this spring.

The only thing that would make the book even better (it's already got 5 stars from me though) is that I wished they covered growing organically.

I wish I could post pictures of my garden, it was truly beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, easy and productive. What more do you want?
I'm using the methods outlined in this book to grow vegetables on my condo deck.I didn't think I'd be able to grow much, but I got far more vegetables than I expected, plus herbs, etc.I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I just wish I had a yard so I could apply these methods on a larger scale.Square foot gardening has a website, be sure to check it out! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Two teens are too much?
My hammock stand bent terribly out of shape.I've replaced the bolts, and hope the dents in the frame won't cause the new bolts to also bend.
The largest weight I've had it support are two fifteen-year-old girls -- possibly a combined weight of 225?Seems like the frame should've outlasted four months and two teens...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stand Best Value
I got stand together with the large green/white stripes hammock as a package deal with free shipping. The stand and hammock arrived within a week on the same day in 2 different packages. The stand is easy to put together. It is very sturdy and easily hold 2 average size people. Moving is easy if you have 2 people. The actual stand is larger than I expected, it is around 15' long and pretty heavy. The roman arc shape is a nice touch.I check prices on specialty hammock store and they are almost twice as much as the price I paid before shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Great Stand - Move it to fit your shady spot!!!
It is a great stand. The biggest factor for me was motility. As the sun passes a certain section of trees in my backyard, I can easily move the stand to sit comfortably in the shade.

It is very sturdy, attractive, and the shape is pleasing. It is larger than it appears in the picture, and accomadates a fifteen foot hammock.

It comes with these "Z" hooks that makes it incredibly easy to take the hammock down and put it up again. Moreover, assembly took a matter of minutes - you'll need a flathead screwdriver and a 9/16th ratchet/wrench. One person assembly.

I happened to catch the stand on sale, which of course sweetened the incentive significantly. The super saver shipping only took a few days to arrive. However, the stand was not in stock and it took some time to "re-order" from the manufacturer.

Overall, if you don't mind the potential wait - you will adore the time you spend reading/relaxing in the hammock you obtain to go with this stand. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
I bought one of these because it claimed to be heavy duty. Mine suffered electrical failure almost immediately. And look at the grab nub on the cap. It's smooth and beveled backwards (like a teepee instead of like a vee), so if your fingers are the least bit slippery, you cannot use that nub for its sole and only purpose, which is to remove the cap.Poor reliability and careless design work by a company that's been making blenders far too long to be putting out a product like this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Although the blender is very powerful, it had trouble blending ice to make two pina coladas.I had to turn off the blender and stir the pina colada mix, and ice, with a spoon four times before all the ice was crushed...and that was only the first drink of the evening.
I made another drink later and had the same problem with the ice.Instead of turning the blender off and stirring the mix myself, I shook the blender with both hands and accomplished the job.
I guess that I was expecting a blender that could handle crushing ice efficiently and without my assistance.
I would not purchase this blender again or recommend it to anyone.
Next time, I will get a Kitchen Aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
It does an amazing job crushing ice. It's nice to look at, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of almost all Florida Edbile Gardening
Much of folks gardening devotion seems to be to their lawns and their flowers. This is a shame. Although beautiful - beauty CAN be combined with abundant, fresh food. With modern convenience, people have neglected the need to be self-sustaining and grow their own food! Their own food can be chocked full of vitamins, minerals, tlc, and be free of pesticides and contaminants. Wow!

That said, this book is certainly a must for anyone who is considering planting an edible garden, square foot garden, or edible landscape here in Florida. All of the above are covered in this book and more. The information is extensive - but easily readable...even by kids. Especially cool is the section detailing the different areas of Florida - North, Central & South - and their different requirements and conditions. Major crops are covered in detail, while minor crops are covered. Good crop profiles are listed in the back & a children's section provides gardening projects that the children will love. :) Chocked full of great ideas for adults and children.

Due to space, more exotic/tropical fruits are only listed, and not covered in deatail.

A MUST buy for all edible Florida Gardeners.

-David
