The current and corrected version of the state flag of Nevada
I will freely admit that when I first saw the current version of the state flag of Nevada I thought there was some sort of a mistake. The flag consists of a cobalt blue field and the only design on that field is in the upper-left corner of the flag. There you will find a single large five-point star. Immediately below the star is the name "NEVADA" in yellow upper case Roman letters and below that is a half wreath made of two sprays of sagebrush. Above the star is a yellow banner with the words "BATTLE BORN" in blue, a reminder that Nevada was the only state admitted to the Union during the Civil War when it became the 36th state in 1864. I am not sure what they think of this in West Virginia, which was admitted in 1863. The Mountaineer state's commemorative quarter comes out this year and Nevada has to wait until next year, so there is some small measure of justice here.

The state flag of New Hampshire and the good ship U.S.S. Raleigh
New Hampshire was one of the original 13 states, but the state legislature did not adopt a stage flag until 1909. The state flag has the state seal of New Hampshire, "in suitable proportion and colors," centered on a blue field. New Hampshire's original state seal was created in 1775, showing a pine tree, fish, and a set of five arrows (for the colony's five counties). In 1784 when the new state constitution went into effect, the legislature updated the seal. Since the coastal town of Portsmouth had become a thriving shipbuilding center, the new design featured a ship on stocks on a strip of land with water on both sides, and a rising sun in the background over the Atlantic Ocean. A laurel wreath surrounds the depicting of the ship.

The official flag of the Garden State of New Jersey
The first thing you notice when you see the New Jersey state flag is its distinctive buff color. This comes from the flags carried by New Jersey regiments during the American Revolution. Not only does the color choice go back to 1779, but the color was chosen by General George Washington when he asked the Continental Congress to dictate the uniform for the New Jersey regiments be dark blue faced with buff. Washington actually chose the colors in part to honor the original Dutch settlers of New Jersey since dark blue (a.k.a. Jersey Blue) and buff were the official colors of the Netherlands (a.k.a. Holland).

The North Carolina State flag for citizens of the Tar Heel State
On May 20, 1861, which was the day that North Carolina adopted its resolution of secession, the state legislature also passed an ordinance to adopt a state flag. A committee of seven came up with a state flag that would consist of a white V on a blue field, with a star being encircled by the Latin phrase, "Sirgit astrum" (I know the second word is "star" but I cannot find out what the other one means, even with the Internet at my command). Be aware that this phrase is not the state motto of North Carolina, which is also in Latin, but is "See quam videri" ("To be, rather than to seem"). William Jarl Browne, a Raleigh artist, was consulted by the committee but came up with some changes from the original proposition that were officially approved by the North Carolina Convention on June 22, 1861. The Browne flag had a red field with two bars: the top one being blue and the bottom white. Centered on the red field was a five-pointed star with the date May 20, 1775 appearing in a semi-circle above it, and the date May 20, 1861 below. The latter was the date of North Carolina's secession from the Union while the former represented the Mecklenberg Declaration of Independence, which was seen in the context of the Civil War (a.k.a. the Second American War of Independence) as being superior to the July 4, 1776 date.

The state flag of North Dakota for citizens of the Peace Garden State
The state flag of North Dakota is based on a regimental flag that was carried by North Dakota infantry during the Spanish American War in 1898 and the Philippine Island insurrection in 1899. The state legislature adopted the flag in 1911, voting on a resolution by Colonel John H. Fraine, that added the name of the state, North Dakota, on a red scroll beneath the Bald Eagle. A bill was introduced in 1953 to change the state flag because it was felt the design resembled the United States coat of arms too closely and therefore was not particularly symbolic of North Dakota, but it was defeated.
