Solid Performer
Rare instance of a product that performs better than advertised.I used it in a 6 to 8 inch snowfall and it worked well.For the heaviest snow (beyond nominal capacity), it works best if you take a half-width cut or tilt it up so you are taking the top part of the snow first.It also works best in heavy snow when you blow the snow out straight-ahead -- it blows further and cuts best.

FROM THE LAND OF ICE AND SNOW
Neither my wife nor myself have had any previous experience with Snow Blowers. But based on others reviews on various units we decided to go for this one late last year - priced at the time from Amazon at a $190.74 with the shipping. Winters here in South Dakota tend to be among the worst in the country - and have been compared to that of Alaska's. The unit arrived here of course slightly damaged - the metal handle assembly bent out of shape. At least I was able to repair this myself without going through yet again the misery of having to return something. In actual use, the first time we used the unit we found it was useless for clearing our large back yard (unpaved) for access to our many supply sheds. It was just too difficult to push the unit through even powdered freshly fallen snow. The second use involved clearing our front (paved) sidewalk to the house. While the unit did do much better on a paved surface, the electrical cord constantly getting in the way absolutely drove us crazy! Thus now the unit sits in the garden shed - unused - and most likely a guaranteed future candidate for my wife's next big cleanout (more money down the commode).
Think before buying
MTD purchased Troy-Bilt a few years back and has decided they have no interest in supporting the dealer network or customers who bought PRE-MTD Troy-Bilt equipment. Specifically the Troy-Bilt 42012 Snow Thrower. They make no recommended engine replacement, offer no spec for the engine refuse to even attempt to work with Tecumseh on a recommended replacement. In short, all dealers are unsupported as are the customers. What they are interested in is taking the Troy-Bilt name and that is it. A reputable company (the REAL Troy-Bilt) would have worked with the dealer (their dealer who originally sold the machine) to find a replacement then document it to their entire dealer network so it would become a non-issue. Troy-bilt chose not to do this. I would think twice if I am a consumer or dealer on how MTD, brands also Club Cadet, Yardman, Bolens, McColloch, and MTD treat their dealers and past customers. If you looking to purchase something the manufacture will stand behind, don't purchase this. To MTD it is disposable and so are their customers. Hope this helps. ... Read more

huge but I got it cheap
I got the craftsman 88790, a consumers best buy although I haven't used it yet, for $650.00 brand new in a box, I'm hoping I got a good deal. it's 9hp 28" powersteering w/ headlight. from the picture, its basically the same except the hp and I got 28".

Chute Control problems overshadow an otherwise good machine
The trigger control power steering devices work well, as does the 120 volt starter.However the chute directional control often won't budge, and has to be assisted, and then it won't stay in the position you selected as engine vibration will cause it to move around throwing snow where you don't want it to go.

dissapointing!!
We bought this attachment for our lawn tractor.After the 3 hour installation complete with missing bolts, we attempted to plow our driveway in the first major snow storm of the year.Well, just like the review above...we should have bought a snow blower!The tractor is just not powerful enough to push all the snow.The tires, even with the wheel weights and snow chains kept on slipping & sliding.We ended up having a brick wall of packed snow at the end of our driveway, that we had to shovel anyway.We will be returning this and sticking to lawn mowing with our tractor! Dissapointing!!

Snowed in
I was very disappointed in this item. After looking at my local Lowe's for this item (they didn't have it though they would gladly order me one for over $500!!!) No thanks, I could get a two-stage snowblower for that. Anyway, my dozer blade arrived via Fedex 3 weeks after I ordered it. The day it arrived, we received 8 inches of snow. I was anxious to install and get busy clearing the driveway. The box arrived in decent shape. I opened the box and did a quick inventory of the parts before getting to work. I was very disappointed to find that most of the hardware was missing. I had to drive back to Lowe's in the snow and spend about $11 buying hardware so I could install the blade. Then, I found out that the seller packed two right-side frame brackets. I needed a left-side bracket and a right-side bracket. I figured out a workaround. Later, I found another poor design issue that I couldn't overcome with a workaround. I will be calling the manufacturer's customer support line tomorrow because I was unable to use the blade tonight on my driveway. In hindsight, I should have bought a snow blower. ... Read more

starts very easy
I have used my new yardman 3 times and I am on my 2nd v-belt. I have an old toro before they came out with the shute and it still has the orginal belt on it. I like the idea of not mixing the oil with the gas. The engine starts easily and it hasn't stalled on me yet which is great. I might try a 34 and a half inch belt next time and see if it last better. The snow was on the heavy side but I can't control mother nature. I have a long driveway. I tried the electric start once and it works but it starts on the first or second pull so I don't have to use it. If it wasn't for the v-belts I would rate it higher.

Great Item
Good savings on product for one, saved on shipping, very ez start, pushes ez. Bag comes off easy for emptying,just need to empty often else it gets hard to push (lol) found out the hard way. Great item for the money.

Beware ofthe packaging
Mower dies, I order new one. First one I received after waiting a week was so banged up (box and mower) it was hard to tell anything other than this: my grass is getting longer and the first two guys that had THIS unit didn't like it either. Wife is saying I told you so. Yes, you could tell it had been re-sealed twice before. The wheel adjusters and brackets were WAY bent due to POOR PACKAGING.(wife won't shut up) The frequent traveling of this unit caused engine damage;2" deep indent to the METAL flywheel housing...it ran for 20 secs. and screamed I give up. Wife is also screaming.The engine is locked, NOT siezed (my mechanic's opinion). Amazon wants me to go to Authorized Dealer!!! WHAAAA? We all know that means 2 weeks. Can't ship back since I put gas in said lemon. Wife is FREAKING and the grass has taken one of our cats. Amazon takes pity after hearing wife in background wage holy war...on me.The second one comes in 6 days/6 inches ; box looks better, wheel assemblies WAY bent again,( I don't tell wife) no apparent damage to engine.I fix wheels, start engine, it runs, I mow a 15" jungle by now and it doesn't skip a beat. I'm starting to think I might survive this whole mistake. Briggs & Stratton thank you, thank you, thank you. Can't beat those engines. MOWER: good. ENGINE: great. PACKAGING: Pathetic. AMAZON CUST.SERVICE: excellent. This mower, for the money, could be a 5 if it wasn't so abused.

Beware faulty packaging producing shipping damage.
Yard-Man's incorrect packing this mower resulted in two consecutive mowers with identical shiping damage deforming the left rear spring lever.This occured because unlike the other wheels, the left rear wheel spring lever was packed engaged in one of the notches in the left handle bracket so that the wheel stuck down.The other wheel's spring levers were packed unengaged by their brackets and did not stick down.During packing and shipping, loads on the left rear wheel deformed the spring lever so that it would not properly engage in the notches.
