Good Value, easy starting
It's been two full years since I wrote the initial review on this mower and it contiues to give excellent service.My lawn is about 1/2 acre so there is a lot of cutting with a push mower from April to Sept.I have changed the oil twice in two seasons but have not chaged the spark plug or the air filter.After sitting in the garage unused for five month this past winter it started after about 3 pulls.Having the priming bulb helps a lot. Good value, some are better

If you're looking for a basic, no-frills mower with the power to mulch seriously overgrown grass, this is it. It starts easily, runs well, and I've never been able to bog it down, even when my lawn is starting to look like rain forest. Misrepresented
The item is advertised as having a powerful 6.5HP engine, but what arrived at my door was a 6HP lawn mower with a mediocre engine.For small lawns this is probably a great product, but for large lawns I would not recommend it, especially since you can find a comparable item at your local big-box store for a little less.If shipping were not such a problem in my area I would have returned it. However, I do not feel "ripped off" but simply that I did not make the best selection I could have for the amount of money I spent.

Mower works pretty good
Came in assembled, just filled in oil and gas and it started right up. Self propelling action helps in mowing quickly. I gave 4 stars bcos I think packaging could have been little better for a 93lb mower. But so far looks good. Also the description says 6.5hp engine, but actually its a 6.0 hp engine. Many parts missing in shipment.Doesn'tmulchwell.
I must say, I've never had as many missing parts in a shipped item as this one.Missing upon arrival were the owner's manual, two knobs for the height adjustment levers, two bolts and nuts, a cotter pin and a hub cap! Damn Amazon, you can do better than that!Now I have to call the manufacturer and get these parts on my own.

Really Bad Customer Service
I purchased my Yard-Man in Jan 2004.Mower worked fine until I hit a rock while mowing in November 2004.I took the mower to a Yard-Man authorized service center where I was told I needed a new blade hub (holds blade on to shaft) but that it was a simple repair.Long story short, it took 7 weeks to get this part!The owner of the repair shop told me MTD is notorious for their poor parts distribution.I made a complaint to customer service via their MTD website.My reply was a link to a FAQ section that explains not every part can be kept in stock and that some orders may take 14 days.Basically they blew me off.As this is my only recourse, I would advise not to buy any MTD product because of their poor customer service.

Yard-Man 12A-469P701 6.5, 21 in 3N1 Self-Propelled Mower
Amazon sent me a 2003 model, that had two wheels damaged and yellow hubs missing. Had to order from the Manufacture and they did not send a hub cap. Found the 2005 model for $259.00 at Home Depot and Amazon will not honor there low price Guarentee, they said look at the fine print.I ordered the mower from Amazon at work, and if I waited until after work and bought the mower I would have had a fully functional product for $40.00 less and it would have been a 2005 product.

Shipment and initial use
I received the lawnmower in perfect condition ready to have the gas and oil put in, raise the handle and start mowing.I have only used it once but was amazed at how easy it was to turn corners with it and the speed with which it moved.Good walking pace for me.I was mowing high grass with the mulch mode in use and it did overheat.I will use the bag for the rest of the high grass and hope that fixes the overheating problem. I am very pleased with this lawnmower

Shipping Poor
The box was total open when the mower arrived. It looked as if the lawn mower fell out and was put back into the box. Oil came out and clogged the air filter so the mower was not able to start. I replaced the air filter and the mower now works 100% but I would be wary buy items like this online again. ... Read more

fraud
the mower arrived in a box that had been opened, probably by many people, I don't know. the unit was listed as new, which it looked, as far as the lawnmower itself. the reason it was new was that it wouldn't start. in fact I think so many people had been sucked into buying this unit that the starter rope wouldn't even retract when I started to try myself for the first time. clearly this is false advertising. compound that with the explicit instructions that it cannot be returned and you have a full blown fraud scheme. is Amazon listening? this was a unit listed in the amazon store section, not an item listed by an individual, so clearly amazon should step up and take this back and destroy it when they get it back. this is not helping their image one bit. in fact I may never shop with them again if this gets any worse.

Awesome Mower
After reading reviews I decided to go with this rear wheel drive self propelled mower over the less expensive front wheel drive versions and have to say I am very pleased with everything about this mower.It shipped for free and arrived via UPS in only about 10 days.I would recommend this mower to anyone wanting a quality lawn mower that they want to last for several years.

hard worker
I bought this mower 6 years ago, my son and i mowed lawns for the son to have extra money. we needed a better mower and found this one to be onsale. we liked the rear wheel drive, as we found that with front wheel drives as the bagger fills the weight tends to lift the front, then you have to lift the handle bars to get traction, not with this modle. this mower is the older briggs 6hp and has been worked to death(with proper maintenance)and a lot of parts have been changed or removed but, it is still working and i will buy another one! ... Worked Great or 2 Seasons
Now it is a push mower. I ran over a rock and killed the tranny like other reviewers are saying.
Several Problems in after 3 seasons of use
I have similar problems with my Yard-man model 979 as many of the other reviewers. My gear shifter is frozen and one of the wheels keeps falling off due to a worn screw hole in the front axle assembly. I have only been using it for 3 seasons. Considering how much it cost, I expected better quality, durability and reliability. I've used several mowers in my life (mostly really cheap ones) and this has the worst quality of all of them.

Good but not as advertised
I ordered this mower for the Briggs and Stratton 6.5HP (B&S) Quantum Engine and the self pacing self propelled mechanism. After waiting 3 weeks I got a 6.75 Techumseh engine and the self propelling mechanism is an odd mixture of push forward, pull back that is anything but self pacing for me. Would have been nice to state correct engine on mower and to have a better explanation about how "self pacing" mechanism works?. ... Read more

The absolute worst lawnmower I have ever owned
I replaced my 14 year old Toro lawnmower with this one.In the 3 years I have owned it the self propelled speed control has broken twice and it idles and dies or runs rough.This is after taking it in several times with no improvement.I suggest not buying this model and going with a Toro instead.I will! ... Love the Bug
I have used my yardbug for one season and have enjoyed it thouroughly. It is very easy to use and cuts great. So far I have had no problems with it and I am looking forward to another year of mowing.

For lack of a nail the war was lost!This mower has all the makings of a great product but is now sold only at Amazon. Yard Man Yard Bug - Bagger underwhelming
Right off the bat had problems with the delivery agent.They did not have a lift-gate truck and requested help for the driver to unload.The mower arrived in a full tractor-trailer with no ramp or way to get the wood framed crate off the trailer.The driver and I muscled it off using a ladder and plywood as a ramp.The "free" delivery was crap.Also after uncrating and trying to start it the battery was dead.I was unable to charge it to any level which would turn over the engine.I had to purchase another battery which fixed that problem.The cut seems even and the mower is much more maneuverable than my previous tractor-type mower.But the vacumn ability of the cutting deck is not as good, it doesn't pick up everything you go over.It may be due to the design of the deck/bagger which is an integrated unit under the seat, also the chute is fairly narrow which will clog easily in heavy/wet leaves or clippings.This design does make for a narrower unit as there is no external chute connecting to the side of the deck which takes up space and creates clearance problems when trying to cut up close to something on that side.Overall I feel it works best as a mulcher/side discharge mower.Don't expect to pick up huge amounts of leaves or clippings as the bagger fills up too fast and will require many trips to empty. ... 20hp Yardman tractor arrived
The tractor arrived ALL BOXED up very securely in a wooden crate.ABF Freight was very helpful, unloading and putting it in my garage for me.The unit was very dusty but no shipping damage noted.Here are my comments:
Not Bad But MTD Customer Support terrible...
Tractor was delivered by ABF within a week of ordering! It was crated and the driver used the liftgate and brought it into my garage. i tipped him $20 for the effort.The tractor was in pristine condition. Lots of wood to remove. After an hour uncrating the mower and attaching the seat and sterring wheel I thought i had an issue becausue it would not start. I charged the (2004) battery but nothing worked just a little click. I called MTD "support." They told me it was a 2003 model and I may have recieved a used unit as Amazon was selling refurbished and used units. I assured him it was sold as new and had the warranty even though it was a 2 year old model, He told me I would have to take it to a warranty center for repair! No way. I don't have a trailer nor do I expect to have to do this before even using it!!

Meets my needs
I have used this tractor for about 9 months now.Overall it has performed well.I do not have a large area of grass to mow.I purchased this to use with a 42" snow blower attachment to clear 5000 sq feet of driveway.
Low Cost - High Reward
I have been using this Tractor for about 2 months . I have about 2 acres of grass , and have not one problem ( yet ) with this machine . The Engine is powerful and quiet , and I like the auto-drive , with cruise control. The 46" deck is nice ( had a 42" ) , and cuts great , even on hills. For the price you can not find a better deal !!
