Editorial Review

The portability of gas power without the mixing and pull-cord, the ease and reliability of AC power without being tethered by an extension cord, Toro's 12-volt trimmer is a first-rate unit for homeowners. A 12-volt battery offers a run time of at least 45 minutes, more than enough for the average yard. The D-shaped handle’s curve balances the trimmer’s 10 pounds nicely in hand, and we especially like the wide-grip trigger. It comes out of the box fully assembled, needing only a 12-hour charge to be ready to run. The spool holds 10 feet of .065 line, and spool replacement is a snap--literally—-because no tools are needed. Just bump the head to advance more line. We like this trimmer for its light weight, ease of handling, impressive run time, and great price.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy a goat
I bought this unit in the thought of being more environmentally friendly after my last gas powered Ryobi engine seazed up.

Be careful not to let the line touch pavement or any hard surface. The line will break and recoil back onto the spool.I spent more time readjusting the spool of line than trimming. It is too short if you are 6 feet tall, so be prepared to walk around your yard in an uncomfortable hunched over fashion. Also, do not let the areas you need edged to grow more than say 3 inches. It will take too much battery power to cut this length of grass and obviously longer grass.

On the bright side, when you lawn is half edged, you need to recharge the battery, giving you a nice break time to enjoy an ice cold refreshing adult beverage; which is nice.I gave it a 1 star for the refreshing break time it allows you, even though your chores are still not complete.

The line will sometimes spew out tangling around the head. The line cutter is all but worthess, probably more suited to cutting butter. Finally after one of the line spewages, it wrapped itself around the head jamming it tight.Yep, broke the gears.Happily, this plastic Toro is now on it's way to the landfill.Environmentally sound?Nope.I'll stay with a gas trimmer next time.Unless your urban area allows farm animals, buy a gas trimmer, they are lighter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disgusted, too
Put me in the totally disgusted category. I got one of these and boy am I sorry. It has not run correctly since I got it. The line continually tangled, so I had to pop it open numerous times to untangle it. In the process the spring apparently got lost OR IT WAS NEVER THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. The "easily pop in a new string" is totally bogus. My hands are not small, yet I cannot open the unit without a tool (flat-edge screwdriver) and now have the scars to prove it. Where to find a spring? Good luck. Toro does not offer such a thing in any retail or on-line location I have found. The closest service (to replace a spring!) is several miles away.

So, I don't like:
1. the weight--much too heavy.
2. the length--for all that weight it doesn't have much reach.
3. the recharging--why can't I take the battery out and recharge elsewhere instead of taking that grubby machine into my house--LIKE I DO WITH ALL MY OTHER RECHARGEABLE TOOLS?
4. the line--so prone to tangling that I have yet to finish a 50-square-foot area and yet I have used up all the line.
5. the spring--why is it not permanently attached like my old trimmer's, or at least easy to get a new one?

What I do like:
SO FAR, NOTHING!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to assemble !
This trimmer is definitely NOT "easy to assemble". I'm a merchandiser and assemble large displays for my job. In addition to that I always assemble all items at home.
The trimmer's handle clicked perfectly in place with the middle part. But when I tried to click the middle part into the bottom part, the bottom part split open (along the seam) and the middle part simply would NOT fit.

After reading some of the other reviews, I'm guessing Toro changed the design of this trimmer. There were NO bolts to screw into ANY part. The instructions were simple, snap the bottom and top part onto the middle part (after stuffing the cord into the the middle part).Yes, the parts were angled, so it was impossible to attach them incorrectly. Even so, the parts did NOT fit together as they should.
I've sent it back to Amazon and am waiting for a refund.

(Received my refund from Amazon, thank you, I won't buy any more Toro products in the future.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Flashlight Ever
I have owned this flashlight for over 20 years. It is the most dependable light ever.It was given to my dad from the police chief of our city.I now live in his house and it hangs on the wall next to the door always charged and ready. If there is ever a blackout, you know right where it is and you know it is ready. We all reach for it several times a day.I just bought a new one to put at my other door.It is dependable and sturdy and can be used as a weapon if needed.Best light I have ever owned. You will wonder how you ever got along without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE light!!!
I have been a home inspector for 19 years.About 14 years ago, I bought a mag rechargeable. In all of those years of crawling under hundreds of houses, banging that light against rocks, floor joists, and in one case, an agitated field RAT, this thing has NEVER failed me.
I am looking at buying a second one, and only my FOURTH battery after ALL of those years!!! One of the reasons for buying another one is that the switch finally failed, and I REFUSE to use a 'lesser' light while I am having this one repaired. The times that I have had to use my backup regular flashlight (a pretty decent rayovac roughneck), it has been like being 'blind' under a house! The pure BRIGHTNESS is amazing! The spot focus on this light is very precise, though I have found that some bulbs focus better than others.
These things are also TOUGH...I have dropped mine a couple of DOZEN times onto concrete and asphalt (yep!!! I am clumsy!)And that WILL sometimes kill a bulb..But the flashlight is almost indestructible! If you could just SEE how battered and scarred this thing IS, you wouldn't believe it still works!
You will NOT be disappointed in this flashlight! It is the BEST investment that I have made in equipment EVER!!!
ENJOY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Safety for Women
This will be the second one I've owned. The first one I had for 10 years and left on a bus, by accident. It is the best deterrent one could hope for. When your carrying it like a cop with your hand at the lamp ready to flash it in someones face to stun them with the light, pop them on the forehead to get their attention, or knock them to the ground using it like a baseball bat.Men look at you very differently, a bit scared and not cat calling and blowing you kisses. ... Editorial Review

Garmin's eTrex Venture GPS receiver offers a host of track- and path-related programs and is surprisingly easy to use. Its size and design make it comfortable to use one-handed, and its automatic tracking feature and ability to download maps from optional CD-ROMs make it an excellent navigation tool.

Roughly the size and shape of a cell phone, the Venture has six buttons that are easily accessible by thumb and forefinger. The Power, Page, Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Find buttons are along the side, with the big-daddy navigation button (a directional click-button akin to a thumb-operated joystick) on the front above the screen. The side buttons are stiff enough that it's nearly impossible to accidentally push one. However, we found the navigation button to be a bit too stiff, which caused us several errors in entering waypoints.

Text was very easy to read--highlights are discernible and menu bars and clickable objects are well-defined. The unit also has an excellent backlight, which illuminates the whole screen with a white light, giving excellent contrast and viewing capability at night.

The Venture's interface is split into five different pages, each providing different functions. The main menu page gives you access to your saved routes and tracks, as well as setup for using WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation Service) reception, unit measurement, time, and display. These are all quickly rotated through with the click of the Page button on the right-hand side of the unit.

The map page displays the basemap included with the Venture, and for outdoor excursions it provides all the basics you'll need. It automatically tracks your movements and you can save individual tracks for later viewing. The map is zoomable from 500 miles to 20 feet depending on your preferences. You can place waypoints and places of interest on the map and name and change the icons of each to create your own personalized maps. If you decide you want to go somewhere, press the Find button and you'll get quick access to waypoints, your favorites list, and nearby cities.

The Venture features 1 MB of memory for downloading points-of-interest data--including lodging, business services, banks, and more--from optional CD-ROMs via the included PC cable. Unfortunately, for more detailed mapping you'll need to look to the Garmin eTrex Legend or Vista, both of which have larger memory capacities and the ability to download detailed maps.

Reception was, of course, best outside on a clear day, but the Venture retained most of its functionality under limited cover like small buildings or thick trees.

All in all, the Garmin eTrex Venture is a nifty little GPS tool and is ready to roll for your outdoor adventure. However, if you're looking to use more detailed map data with your GPS, the Garmin eTrex Vista or Legend would be a better choice. --Matt Deffer

Pros:

  • Intuitive interface
  • Clear, easy-to-read display
  • Create waypoints at key locations for easy navigation
  • Included PC cable for downloading firmware upgrades and maps
Cons:
  • 1 MB memory only accepts points-of-interest data

4-0 out of 5 stars Great GPS receiver for basic hiking and backpacking.
I returned a Cobra GPS 100 and upgraded to the eTrex Venture for the extra money. What a difference only a few dollars more can make! this is my first GPS unit ever, and I had no problems picking everything up within a day.

For starters, it only took about two minutes to locate a satellite for the first time (supposed to take up to five) and averages about 30 seconds to locate one in general. The screen resolution is easy to read and the options for customizing the map make it even easier if you have trouble reading small text. The waypoint markers are easy to define and edit. The compass seems to be very quick in picking up your movements. Almost everything is customizable giving you endless options for your specific use for the GPS unit. The unit is comfortable in the hand, although some of the buttons are a little stiff at first.

My satellite reception is excellent. I took it hiking in 40°F rain and hail (obviously very overcast) and only lost reception once while walking under heavy tree cover. On the way home I placed it on the dashboard and it tracked me 33 miles home without losing reception once. This was in 500 ft visibility fog on a one lane curvy mountain road. This unit definitely gets the job done.

My only gripes are there's no beep or sound when it loses reception and you have to press enter to acknowledge you have lost reception, thus it begins tracking you again. So if you hike by turning the unit on and placing it in your backpack, or even on your belt, you could have lost reception and not known it, and because you haven't acknowledged the unit, it's not tracking you anymore (as far as I can tell).

Other than that, this unit works perfect for getting you in and out of areas where there's no trails and finding that perfect spot to spend the night or fish and hunt.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK, or maybe a bit less than that.
This was a mild disappointment. It is the second Garmin product that fails me, I also owned a Pilot II, whose firmware at some point lost its marbles, and now it displays only some pages and refuses to get a GPS fix.

The Venture had, almost from the beginning, a problem with the display, which flickered and became alternatively all black or white, or lost some horizontal lines, creating a nice "blinds" effect.

The problem normally went away by moderate slapping. But it is not a nice start.

Second point: the battery contacts are sub-quality, you just need to shake the unit a little and the electrodes lose contact with the battery, causing the unit to switch off.

Third: when the memory is fairly full, the operating system goes in overload mode, sometimes it does not manage to acquire the user input, and you find yourself trying to use the buttons without actually managing to do nothing. Erase the memory and the problem disappears.

Four: a few leaves overhead and you lose the fix, the sensitivity and selectivity is not great.

Maybe I had a bad firmware, who knows, but I don't want to change my firmware every month, I expect the original firmware to be OK for a while.

I just bought a Magellan, I'm curious to see if it's better or worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Used for both kayaking and geocaching
I purchased the Garmin Venture a year ago.I have used it on several 20 mile kayaking trips down a river and this past April used it for a 135 mile river trip.It was extremely accurate and we not only knew where we were, but how far it was to the next landing or landmark.

It did take some time to learn how to operate the unit. The instructions were not as clear as I would have liked but trial and error is a great teacher.I had a friend who got me interested in geocaching and that really helped me learn how to use all of the Venture's features. It is easy to upgrade from the Garmin website and to also download maps from the Mapsource CD-ROM's.It is kind of like learning to use a computer.Don't be afraid to try something. You won't hurt it.

I usually average 18+ hours on a pair of batteries.I also purchased a power cord so that I could use it in my vehicle.I just plug it in and wedge the GPS between the windshield and dashboard and follow the arrow to the next geocache.

I have been impressed with the toughness of this unit.I have dunked it in the river, dropped it, and generally given it a rough time.I would recommend this to someone who is interested in a GPS but does not want to invest a lot of money. ... Read more

THis is simply a bench.I was much happier with the Garden Rocker, which is ergonomically designed has a more comfortable seat, and tilts with the body.It is ingenious!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for big people, too
Because of bad knees and because she is a larger lady, my mom has trouble getting up when she is doing weeding.I was concerned that the kneeler might not be wide enough for her to kneel on, but she said that it's really great and that she's very pleased with it.She said that it will be great for doing floor cleaning, too.I definitely recommend it, especially for people who have trouble getting up from being on their knees working on things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I used my stovetop smoker for the first time today, and all I can say is that it works exactly as advertised. I live in a small apartment with no decent ventilation and a very rudimentary exhaust fan; and all I got was a faint, pleasant, hickory aroma as I smoked 5 lbs. worth of brisket. The results? I had my 2 boys over for dinner today and I now have 0 Lbs of brisket left over.

After just 2 uses (I also used it on Brussels Sprouts while the brisket was finishing in the oven), I do have one strong recommendarion. Line the drip pan with foil; especially if you used a rub or marinade. I neglected to do so, and I have now 2 lumps of carbonized sugar that may never come off that thing.

Anyway, the reason I am here tonight writing this is because I need to order more assorted wood chips. The quantities that are shipped are sample-sized and won't last very long. I would suggest that if you know what you want to do with the smoker, order extra chips as well. Otherwise, just sample and decide what you like best.

If, like me, you live in an urban apartment with no place to cook out, this and a cast iron grill pan are an excellent substitute BBQ solution. Quite frankly; based solely on flavor, I would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the brisket I did today, and one done all day on an outdoor. The texture will be different, but c'est la vie.

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing would make possum taste great!
I'm not kidding - this smoker has been a revolution in our kitchen. The most important thing is to understand that it is like a Dutch oven- so while your food is smoking it's also roasting.Salmon comes out roasted, but with the most wonderful smoke flavor - pork ribs are more juicy than if you grill them, and you have to work to dry anything out (we over cooked venison chops - thin meat doesn't need much time!).Most foods cook in 25 minutes - although a full size chicken will smoke/roast for an hour and a half.

We have a weekly dinner party and I've been running out of ideas - this smoker has added an extensive list of options to the menu!I just ordered my second one as I'll need two for the quantity of foods I'm smoking.I use the smoker to make appetizers (smoked salmon pate, smoked wings, smoked sauces and veggies...) and I've used it to smoke all sorts of meats - salmon, venison, chicken breasts, whole chickens, turkey breasts, pork ribs, baby back ribs...We spend our trips to the grocer looking for inspiration for our smoker!

The most surprising thing for me has been smoking vegetables. They come out moist, full of flavor and you would swear the rich smoke flavor should be adding calories! It's hard to believe something that tastes so rich could be healthy!Smoked asparagus, cauliflower, tomatoes, artichokes... fantastic!

I use a layer of foil over the top to add an extra seal - for items to large for the space provided you just leave the lid off and make a foil tent (whole chickens and turkeys) it's very easy.We haven't had a smoky kitchen yet -

I've been sending these to my family for gifts - if it's back ordered, trust me, it's worth the wait!

Have fun smoking!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful addition to the cooking repertoire!
If you love the aroma of the campfire, you will love cooking with this wonderful piece of equipment. I was delighted to find that the cooker is substantial, well designed and very simple to use. Perhaps because it is so reasonably priced, I was somwhat concerned that it would be flimsy, but that is definitely not the case. The enclosed booklet is very informative, and contains lots more information, including recipes, than the usual literature accompanying cookware.
My husband was so eager to try it that he convinced me to smoke a fairly thick filet of mahi mahi that I had on hand for his dinner. Although I was not sure how long to smoke it, and was concerned that it would be dried out if I left it on for 35 minutes, it turned out to be delicious--I used the hickory chips that came with the smoker, along with a bit of lemon and pepper, and the fish was moist, flavorful, and seasoned well by the smoking.I absolutely loved the aroma that wafted through the house, and there was no smoke leakage. I also enjoy cooking on cast ironware, which can get the house filled with smoke rather quickly, but no such problem here.
Today I am smoking a piece of salmon filet over alder chips, and it smells heavenly. Am looking forward to cooking burgers, ribs, and a duck using this method. And all the while, I can imagine that I am camping in the summer woods, and forget, for the moment, that I am suffering from cabin fever in snowy New Hampshire. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Flashlight
As a professional auto mechanic I use a flashlight everyday, particularly when I'm performing vehicle inspections. My job has been made easier since I purchased a Streamlight Ultra Stinger (75,000).This light is so bright it simply makes other flashlights look like toys.I've used MagLite etc before, once you use an Ultra Stinger you won't want to go back. One caveat, bulbs for this flashlight are $8-$9 each, and I have to replace mine every few months. Although I do use this one for 2-3 hrs total per day, (more than most) lesser flashlights I've used required less frequent (and less expensive) replacement.Despite this I give the Ultra 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Household Flashlight
I possess some characteristics of a "flashlight geek".I can't help look at the "flashlight aisle" whenever I'm in a department and electronic store.I always want to see the latest-and-greatest.Well, I was in the market for a rechargeable, durable, reliable, and easy-to-use general household flashlight. Now, not just any flashlight would due.I wanted the "best" for under $100.After looking at Mag's assortment, many other great brand flashlights, and flirting with some of the newer LED flashlights, I chose the Streamlight Ultra Stringer.

I wanted a strong beam and this provided it.It is rechargeable and feels well made and durable.I haven't put it through any stress tests, but it has been perfect for providing instant bright light around the home.Yes, it may be slightly overkill for my use...

Enough praise, here are my ideas for improving this flashlight ("lantern"):

- the bulb cover lens is plastic and seems like it could be made of something a little more scratch resistant.I haven't scratched mine yet, but it feels flimsy when I push in.This could be a positive... I'm not sure.I guess its better than glass shattering on impact.

- variable focus on light beam could provide a greater range.Current range almost seems worthless.Maybe I haven't been in the right situations.I know Mag has a much better variable focus on their upper-end flashlights (even their lower-end!).

I'll end with a few positives...Its weight feels nice in the hand, the included chargers work as expected, construction is solid, light is extremely bright (to me), and I'd buy it again if I had it to do all over again.(I still keep a nice assortment of LED, cheapies, and one of those "eternal" flashlights around.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon reshipped defective product to me! OUTRAGEOUS!
I got my Ultrastinger from Amazon today. It has a cracked/torn rubber nipple over the on/off switch, and from all the fingemarks and other tell-tale little marks on it, it's clearly a USED, PRE-OWNED item. Other evidence: the product box was not shrink-wrapped or sealed as it should be, and the battery was fully charged (new flashlights do not come with fully charged NiCad batteries).

I am outraged that Amazon would re-ship a returned, defective item, but that's exactly what has happened. This makes me very wary of ordering from them again. I immediately ordered that UPS come to pick this up and take it back at no charge to me. Now I have to "wait 7-12 days" AFTER they get this POS back before I get a refund. Nice.

Also, now that I've seen the way the rubber switch cover fails, I've decided not to get this product anyway. I'll have to look into another manufacturer. ... Read more

Exceptionally strong, durable, flexible, and lightweight, this Flexogen hose is built to last. Designed to withstand 500 PSI water pressure without bursting, its double-layer, polyester, cord-reinforced construction provides outstanding strength and endurance. A special sealed compound--flexible even in the harshest cold weather--coats and protects the hose from rain, snow, mildew, cuts, and abrasions. The Flow Guard Plus collar keeps the hose extended and kink-free, so no matter how much you tug and stretch it, water flow is never interrupted. An O-ring seal prevents leaks, and crush-resistant, brass couplings keep their shape impeccably even after years of use. The hose also winds and stows easily. It even floats for trouble-free retrieval from pool or pond. Measuring 5/8 inches in diameter and 100 feet long, this sturdy garden tool is made in the USA, and backed by a full, lifetime-replacement guarantee. --Mary Park ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars do some research!
I do own this hose, it's fine, holds up well. But I'm writing in response to the cancer references. Please, do some research before you write comments! When I looked on Google:water hose cancer, I found the information I need to know when buying water hoses from any manufacturer.

The warning for this hose is there because of California's Proposition 65. Proposition 65 limits exposure to chemicals that are identified by the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. These chemicals or elements may be naturally occurring or synthetic. Not all manufacturers are listing this specific warning, but those that sell their products in CA are required to.They all list whether or not the hose is safe to drink from.

ALL non-drinking water safe hoses carry two potential elements that put them into this category:brass (if they have brass fittings) and lead that leaches from the hose into the water.

The following is from an ABC News Report:
"Consumer Reports says the problem is that many hoses are made of polyvinyl chloride, which uses lead as a stabilizer. That lead can leach into the water." "In all, Consumer Reports checked 16 different hoses to see how much lead could leach into the water. Testers cut off two-foot sections, then the hose sections were filled with water and plugged. They went into an oven overnight to simulate a day out in the hot sun, and afterwards, chemists analyzed the water.

Consumer Reports' Jim Nanni says some had very high levels of lead, "In some of the hoses, we measured 10 to 100 times more lead than the government considers safe coming a faucet."

However, the hoses that were labeled safe to drink lived up to their claim, leaching only minuscule amounts of lead.

To be safe, Consumer Reports says before you drink from a hose, let it run for a minute or so. That will flush out any water that could have been contaminated by lead."

There are other reasons to not drink water from a hose as well, unless it is a hose labeled "drinking water safe."This type of hose is sold for the use on boats and campers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this hose!
I have used so many name brand hoses and the Flexogen is by far the most hassle-free and least frustrating hose I've come across. It doesn't kink (this is my number one frustration!), survives wild temperature changes, lasts for years, and winds easily. This is the only hose I use now. I have 8 of them and highly recommend the Flexogen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As It Looks!
I purchased 6 of these hoses with what was supposed to be a lifetime guarantee. After a short time, the end on one of the hoses started leaking so I contacted the manufacture and got a replacement. A year later another hose started leaking and I got another replacement. Then another hose started leaking but the company would no longer honor the warranty! Now Gilmour is selling them. But it's the same hose - "Flexogen". The hose itself it actually quite good if you don't mind replacing the hose ends eventually, I've had to replace every end on every Flexogen hose that I have. ... Editorial Review

Oxford Garden Design's market umbrella combines sophisticated design and superior manufacturing to please you and your guests for years to come. The polyester umbrella, 9 feet diameter, is reminiscent of those found at popular resorts or beach houses. In other words, this is one nice umbrella. It's protected by Scotchgard, which means rain, snow, and sleet bead up and roll off, spills can be wiped away easily, and the thick fabric remains soft and breathable. The 8-foot pole, made of dense, heavy Shorea wood, comes in two pieces. Simply lie the umbrella down, screw one part into the other, then stand it up. The eight-point frame inside the umbrella, also made of Shorea wood, comes securely attached to the umbrella. To remove the cover, pull it over the ends of the frame. A white rope pulley inside the umbrella raises and lowers it. Insert a metal stick at the end of the rope into one of four holes in the pole, depending on whether you want the umbrella narrow (partly open) or wide (fully open). Excess rope can be tied up or even cut off, and brass fittings throughout give this umbrella a finished look. A decorative wooden knob, matching the pole, comes with the package and can be screwed on top of the umbrella. The umbrella and pole together weigh 20 pounds. You will need to buy a stand for this market umbrella, but assembly takes only two minutes. It comes with a one-year warranty against structural failure or defects. --Rhonda Langdon ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap Umbrella, Cheap Performance
I purchased this umbrella for my deck in the Northeast, as a replacement for a much more expensive one that had lasted 5 or 6 years but had developed a few holes and wear.

I've had this one for a year, and it's now heading for the trash.

As described, it arrived in two pieces and was never straight. (The same problem others have described.)It simply never looked like it was sturdy, and within a couple of months one of the umbrella ribs was broken.

Now, in a mild wind, the umbrella snapped into two pieces right around the area where they were screwed together.

I expect items, even ones that are reasonably cheap like this umbrella, to go together well and be reasonably sturdy.I made a mistake with this product.

I would definitely advise against buying this unless you need a cheap umbrella that will last one season, and you don't mind something that looks pretty cheap.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A CROOKED DEAL
Both umbrella and stand seemed to be well made but when I mated them the umbrella was crooked.Apparently the umbrella pole was the problem. This item was too large to bother returning so I kept the item and am not a very happy camper.DON'T BUY THIS FROM AMAZON EVEN IF IT IS ON SALE.Buy something like this from a local merchant so if there is a problem you can make an easy return.
