There are now enough handheld global positioning system (GPS) receivers on the market that you can be choosy when it comes to price, features, and design. Garmin--a leading manufacturer of car, boat, and personal GPS receivers--has a complete line of eTrex handheld receivers, with our Legend falling about midrange.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Small GPS, but PC Cable is behind the times
I've been using the eTrex for about 2 months. All GPS functions work marvelously. However, the PC cable is a 9 pin female serial connector.I haven't had a computer with this kind of connector for over 7 years.Since I wanted to download my datapoints to a navigation program, I bought a "Serial to USB" connector from Radio Shack for $40.After installing the connector's software, my laptop recognized the connector cable, but not the eTrex connected to it.Best bet is probably to go with the Garmin cable for $60.Which is outrageously priced. Why they can't catch up with the real world of USB connectors is a mystery. For handheld navigation though, it excels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent with the caveats noted........
.......in earlier reviews. It cannot pick up accurately if you are too close to buildings, under trees, etc, but i really dont know too many inexpensive GPS units that work under those conditions. For the price an excellent choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great entry level GPS
I'm very pleased with the accuracy and reliability of this GPS receiver. I've had to rely on the manual more frequently than I expected to and the mapping feature really isn't very useful, but for the price I paid, it's a great unit for my primary passion - Geocaching!! ... Read more

Virtually unbreakable, this lightweight, vacuum-insulated thermos travels to work or recreation easily, and for hours afterward, coffee, tea, or broth will still be hot. Or lemonade, iced tea, or a sports drink will still be chilled. Tapered toward the top and slim enough (11 inches high, 3 inches in diameter at bottom) to safely pour with one hand, it slips into a briefcase or backpack. Pouring is a snap--twist off the cup, which holds 6 ounces of liquid, twist the stopper a few turns and pour through a no-drip slot (there's one for righthanders, another for lefthanders) without removing the stopper. Fine threading ensures the stopper seals tightly, while the exterior has a handsome satin finish. The smooth interior cleans with sponge or cloth, and preheating or prechilling with hot or cold water is recommended. Read more

Features

  • Keeps beverages hot or cold for hours
  • Holds nearly 26 ounces
  • Easy, no-drip pouring without removing stopper
  • Hand wash with mild detergent
  • Five-year warranty against defects

5-0 out of 5 stars After I figured it out I think it is a very, very good idea
When I received this thermos, at first I thought there was something wrong with it.For some reason I had the idea that to pour you had to flip up the top. Finally I went to the Amazon.com website and read about it again, it said to twist and pour.So I put some water in it to try it, and voila it poured like a charm.Whoever thought of the idea to leave the cap on (thus retaining most of the heat, which would escape otherwise) had a very, very good idea. The only thing I would change is there would be more specific directions so dummies like me understand better how it works. After I figured it out there is no way this would not be a very good thermos, if not the best! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing!
i love this thermos!i fill it up in the morning with hot coffee and it will keep it hot all day.one time i accidently left it at work overnight, so i wasn't able to fill it up the next morning.i knew there was a little left in the thermos, and since i'm pretty much addicted to the stuff i decided to suck it up and drink bad, cold coffee.to my amazement it was still very warm (though not hot) and entirely drinkable!
4-0 out of 5 stars excellent product, keeps my smoothies frozen
works well, by keeping my smoothies frozen when I taken it for lunch. I have opened it after 3 hours at room temp to 80 deg, with the smoothie still frozen. Size is good also, not too big, about the size of a fifth of liquor, without the neck.Only wish the opening was a bit bigger/wider. Would buy again or as a gift. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon sent me a re-conditioned unit!
Let me start by saying I LOVE Amazon. They've treated me very well and saved me a bundle of money over the years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff
We used this in a tent on a couple of cold Californial coast nights and were toasty warm.We would only need to run it for a few minutes at time.

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT FOR HIGH ALTITUDE CAMPING
The higher the altitude, the colder it often gets at night. The problem is the "low oxygen" safety system built into this heater. There is less oxygen at higher altitude and when I needed some heat above 11,000 feet, it wouldn't turn on.It seems to be a great heater other than this flaw.Mark ... You'll be blown away by the light that comes from this little unit-—it's amazing. It provides a bright swath of light so much bigger than what we expected. Seven super-bright, 100,000-hour light-emitting diodes LEDs mean you'll never have to replace a bulb. We love its ergonomic shape and how it feels in hand. Even with its included batteries loaded, it weighs just six ounces. A helmet clamp is available to affix it to your headgear. We think this is the perfect light for camping, for police and fire professionals, electricians, plumbers (because it's waterproof!), and homeowners for when the power fails.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Streamlight 7-LED Flashlight
A lightweight, rugged, suprisingly bright, long-life flashlight.I sought out this kind of product after my old flashlight went dead on an overnight hike (my fault of course). This one has a 155 hour life and the bulbs (LEDs) never need replacing.Designed for use by firemen, it can take a beating.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad ergonomics
I've had this for several months and have not been very pleased with it.My frustration started on the first day, putting in batteries. There's no clue whatever on how to orient the batteries!Eventually I figured out that you need to put two in facing one direction and the other two facing the other way. (Maybe this is supposed to be obvious, but it wasn't to me!). The light is quite dim, even compared with other LED lights (my 2-AA Princeton LED headlamp is much brighter). My biggest complaint is the placement of the switch, at the back end.A flashlight is meant to be held in one hand, and turned on and off with the thumb. You can't do that with this: it's a two-hand operation to hold it and turn it on and off.Poor design!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great
I had previously purchased 4 Streamlights, three for gifts and one for myself. I recently bought 2 more to have one in each location I might need light. I did not like the light these new Streamlights produced as well as the older ones. The newer ones is more florscent and will light up a room as where the older ones gave a great beam of light. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars perfect light, but give us flavors
I couldn't agree more with the sterling recomendations for the Stylus penlight. The sturdy Stylus delivers reliable performancewithout fail. Be advised though, that if you misplace it, even briefly, you will be so bereft that you will immediately want to order another. Avoid criticism by nosy parkers when they see a second order appear, buy at least two styluses to begin with (both the same color, eh? -- and three would not be too many). This foresight will be rewarded, then, as you'll have one at hand, even the the other one (or two) are awol. With amazon now selling the batteries, how could life get better?
5-0 out of 5 stars Streamlight 65018 Stylus White LED Pen Light
Since purchasing two of these lights, I have come to rely on them and use them almost every day. Wish I had gotten several more when they were on sale.Surprising how many times a flashlight comes in handy.I can easily carry this one with me wherever I go.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good Light
As a police officer, I find this light to be very useful at nights in providing just enough light to write a ticket. It is nice white light that does not provide the glare that a regular flashlight does in this instance. I have found all of the Streamlight products that I own to be of high quality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!
well i just bought the huntsman and was amazed by its weight. it packs a lot and weighs like nothing.i also own a leatherman wave but i found it awkward whipping out a huge piece of steel to open a bottle or cut a piece of string. so i decided to buy the huntsman for daily use and probably keep the wave in my hiking bag. it just weighs too much. i was also very happy that on each tool there was alreddy a thin layer of oil. it has all the tools that you will ever need without all the fancy stuff. fits nicely in the pocket unlike the wave wich felt like my pants were gonna fall off or it would break a hole in the pocket. the tool is also nicely shaped so it doesnt cut into you another bad for the wave. manage to buy it on fathers day for only [...], normally [...] overall this is a magnificent tool. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice piece
Great, handy tool that I use around at the house for almost everything. I do wish there was a philips screwdriver along with, but I think I'll just het another model that has one. This scores big with me because it has most of the essential tools and is compact at the same time. Definitely worth the buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic.Perfect for the urban backpacker.
I purchased my Climber in 1991 and have enjoyed every minute of it.It was - and is still, as far as I can tell - the most compact Swiss Army knife with both the scissors and the corkscrew, the two attachments I felt were the most useful (to me, an urban backpacker at the time) after the two basic knives.I have given The Climber as a gift many times, with great success. The Climber is amazingly sharp, strong, and helpful.I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice clasical
I've had my Climber knife for almost 14 years now, and it is as good and shiny as new. (And I bought it from Switzerland, not that this would make any difference).

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good product.
I've had one of these units for about a year. It's been very useful.Jump started my (seldom used) full size pickup truck twice, my wife's Honda Civic once. Also used the 120VAC outlet to make smoothies with a blender, just for fun.Plenty of power.A couple of shortcomings...The air compressor has very small capacity.Works fine for filling basketballs and footballs. But, when I tried to use it to blow up my daughter's inflatable wading pool...forget it.It would have taken hours...was much faster blowing it up the old fashioned way. Also, the jumper cables are kind of short. You have to balance the (heavy) unit somewhere in engine compartment, close to the battery, so that the clamps will reach the battery terminals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent portable power source
This model is designed for car emergencies (it has a trouble light, jump starts a dead battery with its own suppplied very high quality cables and will inflate a tire), but we bought it for camping trips so we could power a regular fan on hot days and recharge our cell phones. It did both very well--running a good size fan for about an hour a day for five days and recharging four cell phones daily. Its a big lead acid battery in the shape of an old eighties boom box. Because it is essentially a car battery, it is fairly heavy (@ 23 lbs), but it has two sockets rigged to an inverter for AC devices and a standard car DC input. It charges up much faster than it says to expect from a wall socket--just a few hours, and is said to do so faster direct from the car; you get adapters to do both. We will keep it out in the open in case the power goes out.A great investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars power to go
I bought the xpower powerpack for powering some electronics on my Boston Whaler.I have been using it for about a month. It has been exposed to some harsh conditions, left out in the rain, exposed to salt spray, among other things. It works as advertised, and the battery life seems to be a little longer than spec.I have not used the air compressor.Everything else works like a charm. No problems to report.I would buy it again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good, basic compass
This is a perfect companion for basic hikes. Not fancy, easy to slip into your pocket, easy to read...it performs the job of a basic compass very well. For the price, this is an excellent buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great compass for the price
Of course this compass isn't made for exacting surveying work or the such. For that, get a super-nice expensive one. But for the average hiker, camper, or young person wanting to basically know which way is which, this is a great compass to buy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good, basic compass
The Brunton Classic is a straightforward, easy-to-use, low-cost compass that works well in the outdoors. It is a bit clunky-looking and a little bulky in your pocket, but you will appreciate that fact in cold weather when you are wearing gloves. It comes with a TRUE declination adjustment that moves the north reference indicator to the desired declination. This is much better than some of the least expensive compasses that claim to have a declination adjustment but really don't.(They require you to manually offset the needle from the north reference indicator to achieve it, something you don't want to have to struggle with when you are exhausted after hiking for 10 hours.)The Brunton doesn't need a tool to adjust declination, which they claim as an advantage. In contrast, Suunto compasses use a tiny screwdriver attached to the lanyard to make the adjustment.Personally, I like the screwdriver adjustment as being more accurate and less likely to be accidentally moved, but they both work equally well. The bearing markings silkscreened onto the Brunton's dial are not as fine-ruled as the Suunto so you can't get quite as precise a readout, but the difference is insignificant in most cases.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's that strange noise honey?
The inverter works as adverstised and powers my laptop adequately while driving. The only drawback is that the build-in fan is very noisy, so be forewarned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little inverter
This little inverter is perfect because there are no bulky boxes or wires running all over the floor of the car.Perfect for my laptop and for my cell phone charger. It has it's own little fan built in that keeps it from overheating. So far so good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well made, plenty of power, a little noisy
I have not tried it with a draw near its max of 175W but at lower draws it is fine and always runs cool, thanks to the built in fan. That is also the only negative I have after a month with the unit -- fan noise. It is loud enough to be noticeable over normal road noise, although the car radio drowns it out at normal volume. I think I can put up with the fan because otherwise it seems a very good unit. Maybe they could hook the fan to a sensor and only have it run when the unit gets hot. The shape is good for my pickup's dash arrangement and being all-in-one it doesn't slide around or need securing. Overall, a good unit that has done the job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ***** AMUSTHAVEITEM *****
After purchasing my 2nd unit I cannot praise these Battery/AC power unit's enough. My wife + I are 100% Electric reliant due to the fact that everything in our 2,085 Sq Ft Townhouse IS AC. I have to say that this type of AC back-up power plant is THEE ONLY type of Quasi/Generator any Condo type association would ever allow an owner to make use of. Gasoline Generator's are totally forbiden, and with summer's "Rolling Black-out's" and winter storm's, this 1500 Watt supply is a true peace of mind investment. If used responsibly it's easily achievable to stay on top of news or weather by TV-Radio, running a 40-60 watt lamp for many hour's, AND - other conservatively rated appliance's for brief period's of time ON/OFF ALSO for hour's of time. I would also like to mention that if your the "Handy" type, with this system you could gradually beef up your supply time's by simply adding additional batteries, YOU CAN'T DO THAT with any Gas powered Generator, if you bought a 2500 watt generator it can't be expanded up to a 5000 watt unit....with this XP-1500 there's nothing but time + limited $$$ to build the system to your specific needs. In closing, I must also say its very well made, and very reliable when you might need it most! Thank's Xantrex and [...] for offering this great product. Respectfully, Frank.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad experience
The unit failed after I owned it only five weeks.I was only actually used it a few times for short durations. I tried to use it one day and the fault light was illuminated and no ac power was coming out of the outlets.I returned it for repair or replacement 3 weeks ago after receiving a RMA number. I contacted Xantrex and they say they don't know anything about it, and the RMA number is not in there system. The customer support is impossible to get on the phone, and email support takes days to get back to you. They do offer to sell you another unit for 40% off though instead of sending me a replacement.
4-0 out of 5 stars Powers a large Karaoke machine for five+ hours
I needed a powerful but sealed power-pack (sealed battery + converter)for poolside use, to power a large 110-volt karaoke machine for five hours a day.The Xatrex 1500 is the only power-pack I've found that meets this requirement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great But.......
This is a great light, however it's not as bright as the Streamlight 4 AA battery light. This 3 C Battery is more like a floodlight type.It IS brighter than regular flashlights! And naturally it's a bit heavier (due to the batteries) than the 4 AA light.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bright, bright, bright light
The beam of light this thing generates is awesome. Just received it so I can't speak to the durability or battery use. The reflector around the LEDs was chipping when I opened it to install the batteries so that is why I've rated it a 4 star. Nice size and it comes with a clip for your belt. A key chain loop is included too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good flashlight
This is a great flashlight. The light is bright and clear, the bulbs last, basically, forever, and, because there is no waste heat, the batteries last a long time.LED flashlights are a little more expensive than a standard flashlight. They are, however, so functionally superior that I will never again buy a non-LED flashlight. This particular light is first-rate.It is small enough to not get in the way, but produces more light than a standard flashlight. Its bright yellow case makes it hard to misplace. It is also comfortable in the hand.All-in-all, a good choice. ... Editorial Review

We think they call it "Legend" for good reason: You'd be hardpressed to pack this many tools into the space that the Gerber Legendtakes up. Inside this impressive little package, you'll have access tono fewer than 12 tools, including tungsten carbide-steel blades. Allthe hardware is stainless steel, mounted on a nickel-coated die-castaluminum handle set that feels like it was made for your hand. Thezirconium nitride hard wire cutter insert has three edges, and it'sreplaceable, so you'll never be without a laser-sharp edge. The Legendincludes the wire cutter, a combination edge and serrated drop-pointknife blade, scissors, can opener, hack saw, Phillips, small, medium, and large screwdrivers. Each stainless-steel component snaps into placewith a solid locking system. We think it's the perfect pocket tool.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
This is a multitool. It will not replace an entire tool box, but is super handy to have for small jobs and an emergency.I have used this to fix my wife's car, my truck, our household toilet, guns, etc. It's bailed me out a couple of times when a car broke down, etc.
3-0 out of 5 stars One of the best tools but with a some glaring design flaws.
Boy, I've had a love-hate relationship with my Gerber Legend 800!When I got the Gerber it was by far the best multitool I had ever used.It blew away my 80s vintage SOGs, Leathermen, swiss army knives and such.I'had the Gerber from 2002 to 2005 and used it intensively most of that time.If I hadn't lost it I would be using it still. The two tools I've used since (Leatherman Charge Ti and Victorinox SwissTool Spirit) are far better designed and show the Gerbers problems.Even so - there are still things about it that nothing else matches and I sometimes find myself wishing I had the big Gerber in those situations that favor it: 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy
I use my gerber MP-800 mostly at work. I work in an office as an engineer and I often need to do some R&D at my desk. This is where the MP-800 comes in handy. It fits in the desk drawer or I can strap it on my belt when I need to go out in the shop. All the tools lock in place. The saw blade is replacable so you are not afraid to wear it out. This is also true with the indexable wire cutters in the pliers. The MP-800 is the next best thing to a whole tool box. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Does not have a knife blade?
This is a good multitool except for one thing. It does not have a regular knife blade! I was shocked when I received it and could not find a regular pointed knife blade. There is a serated knife blade. But it is rounded at the end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Backpackers look elsewhere..
This is a high quality tool. The fit, finish and action are very impressive. It would be perfect for the handyman, tradesman or anyone that doesn't care about bulk or weight. I especially like the locking feature for the tools. Because it's such a nice tool, I plan on keeping it. It will likely last for many years with minimal care. Having said that, it's probably not for the backpackers out there. The pictures don't capture how large and heavy this tool is relative to most other multi-tools and most swiss army knives. So if you're a backpacker who watches every ounce, there are better alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best multi-tools out there.
I've been on a quest for the best multi-tool for years.Over the last twenty I've had leathermen, SOGs, Schrades, Gerbers, swiss army knives and more.In this review I will put the Spirit up against the Leatherman Charge Ti and the Gerber Legend 800 - what I consider the primary competitors for best multi-tool on the planet at the moment.I owned the Gerber Legend 800 from 2002-2004 - and lost it when the cheesy nylon case broke.I owned the Charge Ti from 2005-2006 and recently had it stolen or lost in my living room by either my kids or a houseguest when I left it out over a vacation week.I got the Victorinox Spirit to tide me over until I found the Charge Ti.As the months pass I'm pretty happy with the Victorinox and can live with the fact this might be a permanent arrangement. I've had it for 3 months now and it has answered every call.

5-0 out of 5 stars Victorinox Deluxe Tinker
I've used SAK's since I was a child and I give them as gifts when ever I can. This model is the most functional of all of them.It is easy to carry, has all of the primary tools you will use, and it functions well in most situations. If you don't mind carrying a belt pouch knife, the Swiss Champ XLT is the ultimate of the breed but can be over the top for most people. This one carries well and covers a broad range of uses. The knife has an excellent warrenty and the spare parts and user replacable items are readily available.SAK even has a version called "My First Swiss Army Knife" for youngsters just learning how to carry and use a working knife.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the breed
Of all the SAK's out there, the Deluxe Tinker is my favorite. It's small enough to comfortably stay in your pocket (instead of those side pouches many of the larger models require), and every single tool in the collection is useable. While I own eight different Swiss Army Knives, this is the one I constantly grab when it's time to go. The only problem I had with it is the scissors. The small metal piece that pushes the blades apart got twisted once when I let someone borrow my knife (never again) and I could never get it to work right after that. I recently purchased my second to let my first retire after several long years of rugged use. If not for the scissors getting messed up, I'd still be using it today. After years of daily use, it's still good. The blades have had to be sharpened and there are a few chips out of the red cover, but I have no complaints with the quality. It holds up to hard usage.

3-0 out of 5 stars They forgot how to make a nail file
I've had Swiss Army knives in the past that had super fingernail files on them. This one will not file anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to have...
...if like me and Mcgyver you find that a versatile tool always available can make a quick fix around the office, campground, on multi day river trips ,or whenever .People who know me are always calling on "McGyver" to come to their rescue with this tool!! I have had to just order a 3rd one due to loss or theft of previous ones because without this knife I almost feel naked and powerless!Have carried this model for countless years and use it practilly daily.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well thought out selection of tools on this model
The Ranger is with one exception, the same exact knife model that has been sent up for 20 years on Space shuttle missions as NASA issue. That difference is it has a corkscrew, replacing the phillips screwdriver in the same location on the knife, all other things are the same. They called the model with the phillips "Master Craftsman" and is no longer made.
